TV for more information we're taking the first step in this fitness journey on the mat and delving into Brazilian jiujitsu you lift your body you kick chest face down semicircle ready to defend yourself yeah that's it guys all right let's take a break huh I'm not talking about anybody in particular if you're a little older maybe you're a little out of shape what do you need for Jiu-Jitsu I believe Jujitsu is all about Joy I have students over here of 3 years old I have students of 64 years old the Grand Master jiito Helio Gracie he's only stopped at training after 9 years old 90 wow yes 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 let's go to our BS you're going to do a short version [Music] one 3 4 5 6 7 woo let you how do you get into Jiu-Jitsu talk to me about your journey it's a super famous sport where I came from rition area in Brazil and I was honestly a shy kid I needed to take some action and defend myself so you did it out of a necessity also to belong but it kind of changed your life right changing my life forever so as soon as I started in jiujitsu I was 15 years old I joined my closest school in the area was graci iaha by the way and I fell in love with jiu-jitsu you know it's just about breaking the like The Stereotype of a fighter you imagine those rough guys when you walk in and soon as you walk through the door there's a smiling guy welcoming you in and you start training start making Brotherhood friendship commanderie it's not about the roughness of course we are fighting but we are fighting most of all with respect that's our main rule inside you is how do you guys feel good nothing right easy for you good that's great good for you guys it's awesome obviously there's some physical stuff going on right like it keeps you in shape it is something that you do for health as well in shape for sure but once you start doing Jiu-Jitsu you want to become better in Jiu-Jitsu I think that like every challenge in life you just want to develop you want to be better so Jiu-Jitsu change your mindset about Fitness now I'm going to make a big turn horse kick take this person now let's try this sure sure what am I doing am I getting choked or am I you're getting choked I'm getting choked yes you're getting chok I getting choke all right I'm going to go slowly over here this is going to go south really quickly now I'm going to drag you back I can't the hand that you have on my elbow the same leg you're going to lch back okay big turn yeah here we are yeah going home safe and sound yeah yeah watch out watch out in the streets people along with exercising eating healthy is another piece of the puzzle do I like Italian food forget about it I am becoming a part of the plant-based Mafia Family just giving you a little bit of that there you go yeah let's get this guy an application if you tell Italians I'm eating a meat sauce it's not meat or I'm eating this you know that so what possessed you to come up with this with this concept cuz it's brilliant it was part of a healthy transition and I was like man I need to make a change so I took some of my parents and grandparents all recipes and started converting them after learning about what the plant-based diet can do for you it seemed like whenever you eat vegetarian or vegan there's a certain type of food that's made you rarely think of it as Italian basic it's pretty easy if you think about it Italian's a Mediterranean and Mediterranean diet is predominantly plant-based if you take out the meat from Italian food it's there's still so much [Music] there it smells great we also have as you see the mafia Motif one one thing that I noticed when I was in LA is that I got a lot of push back for being Italian so I wound up saying you know what I'm going to turn this Mafia thing on its head and I'm going to own it this is one of the reasons we started plant-based Mafia if you're a vegan or plant-based you could come in here and no one's going to hit you yeah right we only whack plants only wack plants that's a great that's a great slogan oh yeah thanks man no thank you thank you very much much I get to go eat now when you come in here you feel like like you're at somebody's Italian Grandma's home in Brooklyn in the' 40s we have the most loyal customers I think in the country because they're afraid they're afraid they might be that's a part of it now that we're fueled up it's time to swing into action for some friendly golf competition at Drive Shack and West Palm Beach I I wouldn't call myself an avid golfer all right uh I dabble even Avid no dabbler I'm a dabbler Angela got what's the difference between this and other ranges that I might have been to well the other ranges that you might have been to it was just the range here we've got food fun and the driving range so golf is kind of like a a byproduct of our restaurant and bar we have craft cocktails we have great food and then you could hit some balls so it's more of an experience so if I'm a Yahoo right like I haven't really it's okay it's okay I can come here and be a youve never hit a golf ball before it's still okay to come and still a place that everybody can have fun and and and enjoy you know all you need to do is take that ball and make it go a little forward right yeah you just got to get it over this little net here and it's and even I noticed that some balls just drop straight down so even correct yeah so not all not all professional no not even close you can hit the drive Shack sign it's 220 y away um most people you know can't hit that but yeah yeah I'm in the most people category right you can play several games we have the trackman uh GPS system that'll track every ball that goes out into the field and uh where it lands and and rolls so there's no lying there's no lying you know exactly how far you're hitting that's exactly right there is no lying at Drive check and one and one of the types of games you can play I guess I would e what play short game we have several golf courses that you can play um or you know there's a monster game that you can play there's d uh Shack Jack which is our version of blackjack every time I come back I can play a different game you can play a different game every time different course every time whatever you want to do that's pretty cool I thought you did great not bad not bad at all that's what I say I think you're a little bit more than Avid more than a Yahoo no more than a Yahoo yeah I don't know if I'm a it but I'm maybe maybe I'm more than a Yahoo my daily life people would disagree next we're diving behind the lens into the world of fitness and adventure with Ben J Hicks who Blends Artistry with a deep commitment to Environmental Conservation some of the shots here are really really like they're eye popping is that a testimony to your creativity or do you think you're at the right place at the right time or as a photographer I'm pretty much also weatherman right right so finding the right conditions out in our oceans it's really doing my homework um and also spending lots of time in the water there's definitely an element where um you shoot a lot of photos and you get one one 2% Keepers and so um just keep going back and learning from each experience at heart I like to be outside and I think I found my my path with photography and my love for the ocean so I think those are my my two influences and then how do you you get into photography I wanted to shoot my friends doing Action Sports and that led to surfing uh I love to Surf R the mountain bike so I bared my sister's camera a film camera in uh '98 my freshman year in college and from there kind of evolved and I always wanted to get my camera in the water right and so you fell you're surfing you fall into the water you're 3 ft under you're like oh my God this is exciting down here I should stay down here is that what it was was the inspiration of seeing the it was also saying I want to get in the water and document yeah and so that led me down a path of shoting professional Surfers for about 10 years and along the way I documented nature I've been doing it shooting sea turtles since 2007 so that long wow focusing really hard on creating something that I hadn't seen before in the world and um and also telling the story of a sea turtle and that's kind of evolved my career in telling that story and making people understand about environmental awareness and their impact and while you're doing it you're staying fit you're biking you're surfing all you still Surf and bike yes yeah I cycle minimum of about 50 to 100 miles a week wa and uh it's been a passion of mine 50 to 100 miles a week I don't even know if I do that in a car it's amazing what you're doing it's very enviable well I don't want to get a job at a cubicle who would right you definitely don't want this job belly dancing has a long history incorp ating different styles and influences over time today it's evolved into a form of entertainment and I am absolutely ready to give it a shimmy and a shake nice job ladies what about these little doohickeys what are we doing here with the coins this Dan is all about isolation so if I'm not supposed to be moving my hips but they are oh you're going to know you can make know so it tells on you it the coins go mm you shouldn't be moving those okay let me show you how good of a dancer I am okay can you teach me any of this stuff yes do you have a hip scarf though uh I don't even know where my hips are yet basic beginner I've never belly danced what is the first thing we're doing so the first thing I do with students it with the very beginner is that you need to find out where your hips are because that's what I just said see I'm so intuitive yeah go ahead so we would start with the knees bent and the feet kind of wide and then just the hips are going to sweep oh I got that come on I do this at home this is a this is Tuesday for me there you go for Fitness what is it about it that is it the core abdominals pelvic floor hips thighs all of that so you take those muscles it works those but in a way that you don't feel like you're working so it's fun it's very body friendly 13 to like 113 can pretty much do it because a different belly dance though at that age would it works all those muscles and and in a gentle way it's it's low impact low impact mhm it's easy on the knees it's easy on the back it's easy on the hips but it works all of those minor muscles which are so important for stability of your pelvis uhhuh so everybody can do that you can be you can be impressed it's okay I am impressed I'm impressed you're much better than anybody else bringing your feet closer together now it's like you're waiting at the bus stop so you're going to be here yeah and the bus is taking forever oh no do I do that you can oh is that belly dancing what do I do with the bus and then your hip is just going to move oh wait am I am I moving the right one yeah well you want to just move this one and straight up yeah okay mhm then just a little faster uh-huh see don't you wish you had the coins oh man yeah mine just a little squeaky Fitness levelwise to start not really important like it get no you can be a total Couch Potato okay that's good to know I studied ballet so you know I bring yeah so I bring that little well we have something in common then oh yeah you valer oh you come on I should have known look at this physique of course posture man clear a dancer right thank you very much oh yeah stiring the gravy oh yeah got really thick right the hip is doing all the work yeah this is fun isn't it what is that oh this is just a general Shake just saw myself of the mirror I look a lot more Awkward than I thought I did oh man I'm getting sweaty I'm not kidding this is not so low impact like I'm I'm impacted I'm very impacted after crushing that workout it's time to indulge in some post exercise nourishment I'm headed to Raw juice in bokeh where my taste buds are ready to get fired up what I what am I in the mood for I don't know you tell me I'm in the mood for something okay so we have our Frozen we have our strawberries bananas blueberries mango or pineapple okay now you tell me which fruit you would like I'm a I'm a blueberry guy a blueberry guy do you like protein do I yeah do I yeah I would say our Hercules protein is probably the the most filled smoothie with protein that I do carry and and Hercules obviously cuz you saw me walking right that Mak sense I had to put two and two that makes sense that makes sense yeah one and a half banana protein oats two scoops of Oats almond butter some spirulina spirulina that's the Almond almond milk almond milk spinach spinach juice like it and coconut water oh man and then we go over to this little too hickey known as the blender right y seems like it's working really hard for that is it is that okay yeah okay all right we all talk about getting healthy everybody talks about it the things you hear are it's too difficult it doesn't taste good you kind of taken care of that right I would I would definitely say raw juice has all of our juices up front they're about 3 or5 lbs of fruits and vegetables and to me it tastes delicious eating and drinking healthy doesn't have to be for a specific age group it doesn't have to be youthful but it does make you youthful I will say uh you do feel a lot better and a lot more energy at that sometimes it's hard to come back right after you kind of hit the wall so many times it's hard to kind of rain it back and try to restart let me see how you did oh you did good yeah Hannah's hired Hannah's hired you can keep her it's very good let let's put the pedal to the metal as we hit the road and explore the growing biking community in the Palm Beaches seems like there's a just a busload of bikers everywhere has biking increased in the area in the last little couple years that I'm missing there's been a huge boom in cycling and especially around here I mean we have a great location for it you know 12 months out of the year you can ride outside so uh in this area it's a great spot to ride and a lot of people are really healthy active down here we have big group rides a lot of different events triathlons Road r racing and just people trying to get some exercise where are the hot spots for bike riders in Palm Beach County hot spots around here are along the coast so up and down the beach Road A1A Palm Beach Island Jupiter Island and then Offroad you have riverb park for gravel and then Jonathan Dickinson and dire park for mountain biking you rent the bikes here absolutely yeah but you also sell them mhm you sell shoes we sell shoes we sell apparel we sell it all yeah you guys are all like a One-Stop shop One Stop Shop for your Fitness Enthusiast for sure like you can get a cruiser or you can get a hot rod uh and there's different levels and in this area you can kind of do it all right we have people that just want to get exercise in their neighborhood to the Enthusiast who wants the the latest and greatest Tech stuff and they just want to go out there on Sundays and Hammer it out with the group rides and then you have you know Elite athletes in the area too that are really trying to elevate their game they're competing on an international level and we service all of those for sure when you buy a bike from us you get your bike serviced for free for the first year oh wow so you know there's added incentives to that plus we assemble the bike we teach you how to use it we take you out and you can test Dy it around here so there's more to than just the bike having the experience the experience of our sales team all the way through to our service team that's that's something that only a bike shot can deliver right and that's why we encourage people to to go to your local bike shop talk with the people that are actually doing it you see a lot of crossover people that were doing triathlons 10 years ago like myself now they're into mountain bike people that were miking triathlons 10 years ago yeah I used to yeah wow that so impressive not anymore 10 years competitive what do you miss most about that that was a great chapter of my life and I I enjoyed um you know I enjoyed it being lighter and fitter I was going to say cuz biking is not is not it's not a joke like it is to me one of the most natural like it's it's simple but it keeps your whole body slow impact right so it is bike is the thing to do yeah now we're headed west to Lake Wellington where the world of rowing is evolving and being revitalized let's meet some of the forces behind the transformation of this sport what is it called is there a a name for skulling a skulling boat oh is that what I right skulling and where did it originate do we know this the first rata was 1274 in Italy 1274 yeah of I mean come on honestly not a whole lot has changed since 1274 sure what we found really important is the faces of rowing have changed a lot sure and what I mean by that is it's now the number one scholarship for women for college for really yeah for sports and we want we want more girls to come out because they may get a free ride someday you know there you go how do you come into uh taking over a Rowing Club this is all you this it's all you all me what what what what possessed you give me your background okay well I am afraid of water oh well that makes sense right that's good cuz the boat Shields you so I thought let me get in the narrowest boat possible are you really afraid of water I really am fantastic this is a brilliant idea yeah so I went to a Larch rot and Doug was there was a coach and I did the weekend survived it and said okay I can actually kind of like this let me do some lessons so I came out here and did private lessons at this club wow and last year the former owner said I'm done I'm retiring and I thought you know what this is a good thing I love it let's kind of expand upon it make it for the community so I love that you go from hating water to buying a business that is basically always on the water that's a fantastic story what we've also done is formed a nonprofit for the youth program that never existed before so now we want to bring kids into the sport of rowing sure and it's been taking off and they did did their first Vata oh really yeah we came in first in boat I mean these kids 3 months ago were never in a boat amazing and they won a lot of the kids that are coming here are not athletes they're getting into rowing and this now is their sport so it's really neat I think you're seeing a lot more a lot more diversity in the sport and we have free learn to Rose so we're trying to make it so anyone can just come out and get in a boat and see if they like it and it's a lifelong sport you know it doesn't have to mean that they have to become competitive skullers right is that the word got of it's like I'm a natural right speaking of evolving the YMCA has expanded its Mission over the decades to become more than a fitness center it's become a place to gather for connection and wellness for all ages why not check it out with me two full body circuits okay benches and then all our free weights along this this where all the serious stuff happens over here yes all the heavy lifting all the yeah so you see to the right it's eim so that's our newest piece of equipment eim what is that so it's like what AI so it's automated automated technology automated so it does the work out for me I wish so it remembers your settings and your weight got you so oh wow so it'll memorize and when next time I come back it's in there yes it's all in there you just need a band oh wow all right it knows your name that looks nothing like me so now you're going to see yourself on the screen wow I am 510 10 get a picture of that it's like a country club in here YMCA starts for a young men's Christian Association so it actually started off as a book club and it just grew from there and took off it literally was just guys coming to read books coming together and having a Bible study wow I didn't even know wow you taught me something today in England in England it started in England get out of here at our y we really focus on community and what our community needs and it grew from there and there's multiple families who've been here for Generations so our y has been around for 50 years wow talk to me about some of the programs that you do have so we have programs such as LIF at the Y we have programs that help with chronic diseases like Parkinson's and arthritis and group exercise classes for them as well so we have spin yoga plates over 60 classes every week we also have pickle ball in the morning for our members that's big now isn't it pickle ball is big and then as long as there's no games or practice going on it's free to members oh wow wow nice all right soccer swimming basketball yes volleyball yes we have youth volleyball and you got leagues too we have yep Youth and adult leagues yeah full gym M group exercise group exercise eim child care what don't you do here I mean we also have preschool is that right we also have preschool here hey Frank welcome there you go it's giving you instructions how to do it properly so that's your starting weight mhm okay so it remembers yeah it remembers your wait for next time and it remembers me this is crazy mhm I got a lot a lot to work on yeah yeah starting point I know you know where to go yeah it's depressing though a from the Boston Marathon to local 5Ks the Palm Beach Road Runners participate in races all over the world and did I mention it's open to all levels I've laced up I've stretched and I'm ready to hit the pavement you guys ready let's go everyone goes at their own pace which is wonderful yeah and uh you can compete in events if you'd like you know from The Local 5 P to the longer distance and other events all over the country and you got a huge group I mean there's a tons of you here yeah we have a good group all levels yes all ages all abilities some are in it for the Social and fitness aspect of it uh some of them are competitive so they bring you know a certain need to you know train faster or further but a high percentage of the people are here for you know their own needs as well as the camaraderie and social element so you've got the the heavy duty Runners they're at the front and they're just giving it their all and then you got a couple guys like me in the back we just kind of chatting strolling right and it's it's it still works it does run the gamut we've had uh some high School folks who did their first half marathon with us they we have a marathon and half marathon training program we prepared them from September to the December palach marathon and they did their first ever half marathon as high schoolers it's incredible we also have runners in their 80s that come out every single week and run with us that's amazing you also do a nonprofit side of this right is it all nonprofit how does it work the pom TR Runners is a registered nonprofit and we look to aim our funds that we raised through three annual race events and we contribute to youth running we support Title One High School Runners for either cross country as a fall sport or the track and field which is a kind of a winter spring sport we sponsor some of their events they host 5K meets for other high schools and so we help sponsor that and we also offer scholarships for those students as well it's amazing so you're doing Outreach as well as just sort of it's not just a casual Club you're you're getting out in the community like just join you I can just come any day and just start running with you you don't have to be a member to run with our group uh we have a website that website has a group running schedule the schedule details where and when we be each day of the week There's a run somewhere in our area every day of the week as you can see I've taken running to a whole new Pace it's been a fun time as we've traveled throughout the Palm Beaches to explore the many challenges to stay fit and healthy we hope you'll get out in enjoy all the fitness Adventures the Palm Beaches has to offer join me the next time as we go on the town in the Palm Beaches With Me Frank lari and that is how the student becomes the master stay down I'm not even helping you out yeah oh yeah what what can I do what can I do do you want to try the wings ooh what what oh yes ooh so powerful right oh man this program was brought to you by discover the Palm Beaches visit the Palm beaches.
