We'll report on the day after, as Pittsburgh adjusts to once again being a City of Champions.
Also tonight, highlights from Ford Field in Detroit and the locker room last night.
And OnQs Detroit team is back here in Pittsburgh now.
Michael Bartley and Dave and Dave report on what it was like to cover this historic game.
Stay connected.
OnQ is next.
Welcome to OnQ magazine.
I'm Stacy Smith.
12 long weeks, three playoff games, and finally a Super Bowl victory.
Tonight Of course, we're talking about and celebrating the Pittsburgh Steelers.
OnQs Michael Barclay and crew have just returned from Detroit.
And we're going to hear more from them in just a moment.
But first OnQs Tonio Caruso on today's happy fans here in Pittsburgh.
Here we go, Pittsburghs going to the Super Bowl And after years of trying the Steelers finally went and won.
And today we found folks all over town still celebrating.
There's the Steelers fan haha hahahahaha.
Go Steelers!
I am too excited for words really.
It was exciting.
Really exciting.
I'm thrilled.
It's crazy.
Crazy.
And it's been crazy since the fourth quarter here at Custom printed Graphics on Pittsburgh's South Side.
Larry Ennis is the owner.
You actually began printing when?
When we knew that the Steelers had the ball with about two minutes left and the Seattle needed 11 points, and they weren't going to do it.
Crews have been working around the clock, printing nearly 2000 Super Bowl championship t shirts an hour.
We're going to try to go 72 hours straight.
72 hours straight.
Days of printing.
I mean, people buy stupid stuff and then they ship it all over the world, literally and all over the city.
We found folks still recovering.
What are you doing today?
Recuperating.
I'm not as crazy last night.
Having the ball, partying.
You know, I was at my friend's house, like, you know, celebrating the Steelers victory.
Some called off work, but others wouldn't miss it, including Tony Thompson who arrived home from Detroit early this morning.
Well, I drove up Friday night and we and we came back late last night and I had to be here.
I work at 12:00.
So are you tired?
Yeah.
I'm a little beat from the road, a long ride, but, you know, being that the Steelers won, I'm real happy about it, you know?
Did you call off work today?
I actually scheduled to be off work today.
So you were planning ahead?
Absolutely.
Planning for the win?
Absolutely.
Did you have any doubts at all as you were watching the game?
Stomach hurt a little bit.
Oh, stomach was really hurting.
But no doubts.
No doubts.
True, true.
Fans never doubt.
Speaking of doubts, show of hands.
How many people were nervous yesterday during the game?
Yeah.
You're shaking your head.
No I was.
They had them all the way.
Defense had them all the way.
So there was never a moment, not a moment, not a moment.
I'm not sure if we believe or not.
The whole game, I was nervous.
The whole game.
Right till the end.
I had all the confidence in the world.
They'd pull it off.
Steelers always make you a little nervous when they play.
But yeah, I always have a good feeling about this year's team.
Says it's great.
Just as great the number of Steelers fans who live outside of Pittsburgh.
Okay, so Brockway is how far away from 120 miles?
Yeah, 120 miles.
So you woke up this morning and you said we want to drive to Pittsburgh.
And why?
Because I'm insane.
Because we love the Steelers.
So we wanted to come down and, see what was going on.
Yeah.
I came back from Kentucky for the game.
I live in Kentucky.
My brother flew in from Florida, so I had the whole family in for the game.
And Justin Dyck, complete with a Steelers tattoo, came all the way from get this Indianapolis.
I hope the people of Pittsburgh realize that your fan base is all over the world.
I could cry right now.
I lost my voice.
It was crazy.
I seen a lot of grown men crying.
I'll tell you that.
A lot of grown men crying.
Last night we heard stories of lots of grown men crying.
Were there any tears in your eyes?
No.
No tears.
Except maybe a few of joy.
Joy and lots of pride in our Steelers and in our city.
We're all happy for Bettis and that, but we love them all.
We love Hines Ward.
We're so glad he got MVP.
So happy that Cowher got the monkey off his back.
Bettis got to ring great.
It has brought a lot of pride back to this area.
A lot of pride.
And, I'm just glad to see everybody smiling and happy.
It means a lot to me.
I'm so proud to say I'm from Pittsburgh.
Really?
This is.
It's big to the city.
It's big.
I mean, it's like words can't even describe it.
I mean, it's like crazy.
We're number one.
Number one, Pittsburgh fans.
We're the biggest group.
Something about Pittsburgh fans.
That's why the team guys, the members played so tough.
They did it for the fans in Pittsburgh.
And that all the yellow flags that you saw last night, 90% of that stadium.
What does that tell you?
It's about the fans in Pittsburgh.
People who built this city.
How great for the city, indeed.
Of course, tomorrow will be the real celebration as the city hosts a victory parade for the Steelers.
The parade begins at 11 a.m.
at the Mellon Arena and will end at the entrance of Point State Park.
We will, of course, bring you in-depth coverage tomorrow night OnQ.
And Stacey, the two words we heard today were destiny and dynasty.
Destiny for Jerome Bettis.
Dynasty.
Hoping this is the beginning of a long, long run.
As you saw, we're all yawning.
Lots of people tired today who didn't.
Everyone hears from my eyes as well, though.
Interesting thing though, and we have to remember, is how important a role Mr.
Destiny Jerome Bettis played for this particular team.
And he's already said he's not going to be back.
So they're going to have to make this chemistry work again next year without Jerome Bettis, which is going to be interesting.
Right.
But as soon as more free agents come in, they were talking about that this morning at the news conference.
There will be a shift, but hopefully they'll make it work.
As Hines Ward said, I'm glad I'm not the coach and I have to figure out, oh well.
Obviously Cowher knows how to to motivate his players and he did a great job with the new, well I guess we're going to start hearing something about it.
A band for the other hand now, because that's that's pretty good.
I just came up with it.
That wasn't too bad.
Very good.
Just literally back within the last hour or so, are Michael Bartley and Dave Hallewell, they were both in Detroit.
Good time, great time.
How was it?
Was unbelievable.
We're we're tired.
And you know that, we just ran in the door because I dont wear tennis shoes on the air every day.
So I just I do grab some things.
Yeah.
But, just phenomenal.
No question about it.
You know, I would say that, one of the things that, you know, Hasselbeck said at his news conference last night was that, it was like an away game for them, and it was truly like a home game for us.
And, right after the game, of course, the it was so exciting to to run onto the field with, you know, all those hundreds of reporters and so forth.
And this is what we got right after the game.
Oh, Mr.
Rooney Thank you.
It's amazing that we have over here.
There's no doubt you guys must know.
How you doing.
Right.
All right, all right.
Ive waited a long time for this opportunity.
Its been playing the game.
And, to come out on top wrestling more don't mean to like when I have a been.
It was great, man.
It was great.
He brought one home back to Pittsburgh like Mr.
Rooney He said one for the thumb.
It's got to be great to have a ring for Mister Rooney.
Another Super Bowl.
No question, no question, no question.
This is a great feel.
I can't explain it right now.
Just so much work going into this.
People doubted you coming into the playoffs.
Your feelings right now, sir.
Super Bowl champs.
There's just nothing better than this.
It's indescribable.
I'm just so, so proud of these guys and how they played and how they believed in each other and played like a team.
When Dan Rooney and Bill Cowher, Jerome Bettis and Hines Ward host hoisted that trophy tonight, it's a dream fulfilled.
You know, we talked about it last year.
We were close and we didn't do it.
So we said we were focused.
And even when people were writing us out, it makes it that much sweeter because we stayed in there and stuck together as a team.
Some people wondered, would you have a sneak play?
And you had one?
They said, where was it coming in?
I guess we we got it at the right time.
That's a credit to those guys.
On the offensive staff and sitting in there all those hours and coming up with those things.
Congratulations.
There we go.
That's great.
Well it was going through my mind right now.
Oh man.
It's just great, man.
I mean, to be out here and have fun man.
Just this is great.
I mean, we got a ring.
How about the people of Pittsburgh?
What do you say to them tonight?
Hey, to people in Pittsburgh.
We coming home.
We having a parade.
We come home and celebrate with y'all.
I mean, and it's been seem like Pittsburgh was here.
It seems like everybody's here, but it's great, man.
I feel real good.
Congratulations.
Good day.
I know you're tearful.
What's going through your mind for your husband?
It's a it's a surreal feeling.
You know, the whole game kind of went that way, but, I'm just so pleased for him because this is.
This is why he coaches, you know, to to win this game.
And, I'm thrilled for him, for the Rooneys and and for Pittsburgh.
And, you know, I you're right I'm speechless.
Almost.
So thanks Kaye, Congratulations.
Thank you.
Hey hey hey, Frank.
All right.
All the rest.
As you saw, was absolute bedlam on the field.
Joey Porter being interviewed there, 3000 people in the media here.
And take a look right over here at the stands, the Steelers faithful who made the trip here to Detroit.
They're waiting for their favorite players.
Yeah, yeah.
Clark, how's it feel, man?
This is big.
I'm out of breath.
Just because I'm so emotional, I'm taking this home.
They better make a new one.
There's a lot of fingerprints on it.
That's cool.
I got some armor.
All we're good.
It's great.
Unbelievable.
It's so.
Hi.
How are you?
Excellent.
Fantastic.
Pat, just tell me what you're thinking.
I'm thinking that it's almost too hard to believe in such a wonderful night for us, for Pittsburgh, for our players who are tremendous guys.
I'm really proud of everyone.
When Dan hoisted that trophy, that was the greatest, greatest feeling.
The four trophies of home or in a case so we don't get to touch the material.
So I need to be able to haul one and lift it up.
It's terrific.
Congratulations.
Thank you.
Thank you.
Woo hoo.
If you look at the last two years, you know, we were one of the top two best teams over the last two years.
So being a six seed was no different to us.
And, we had to go to that adversity late in the season, in order for us to get to this point.
And, and, here we are, world champions.
What a blessing for me.
I'm enjoying this.
I'm right back in the weight room next week, man.
Who, after all, said and done and reflect on the year.
And I'm right back working hard for next year.
Well, hey, it's a special night.
You know, very special group of people in this locker room.
Well, Coach Cowher been at it for a long time, so I'm really happy for him.
Coach LeBeau, you know, these veteran players have been after it for so long.
It's just great to see them.
Their hard work paid off.
Your feelings, Mr.
Rooney, on the people of Pittsburgh.
The whole Steelers Nation tonight.
Well that's a great night for Steelers.
Nice.
Just no doubt about it.
They've been with us every step of the way.
And you know on the road this year.
Just unbelievable here today was like being at Heinz Field.
And it was like a home game.
It was it was it's been like that all year.
It's everywhere we go.
Congratulations sir.
All right.
Thank you.
Just your feelings tonight, Mr.
Rooney.
It's, just great.
I mean, we're really excited for this team.
They did a marvelous job.
They picked up the challenge everywhere that they were asked to do.
And, Coach Cowher did a marvelous job.
You know, taking the challenge to them, encouraging them on when needbe And, they took it to the.
They took it all the way.
What do you have to say to the people of Pittsburgh?
Well, we're bringing the trophy back to you.
And, it's a great thing.
And, we just we thank the people of Pittsburgh for what they have done for us, how they have backed us.
And, stayed with us the whole time.
And Rooney and the trophies back here now, baby, that that locker room was just pandemonium, as you can imagine.
Because there's so much media.
Oh, right now because these are some shots I've not seen before.
And so you got to get Frank.
Frank Caliero just did a magnificent job.
As soon as about two minutes before the game ended, I ran down to meet him, and the media gathers together, and I don't know how Frankie slipped through, but he slipped through somehow.
Because they take, you know, because the still photographers and the pull cameras are on the field for the whole game, of course, in NFL films.
But, you can't let everybody on there or there would be no room, but.
And so I called Frank on the cell phone and said, Frank, I'm in the tunnel.
The game's getting ready to end.
I need you.
Where are you?
I have to do some interviews, he said.
I've been on the field for five minutes.
Where are you?
So he snuck right in there and did a super job with those images you just saw.
We should mention Franks not here and Dave Rhodes.
They have an affidavit.
Director's working again.
He's in the control room.
Working.
Michael is.
You know, this is kind of a regular day for.
Dave.
And I are on a Rolling Stones concert.
Right?
The Steelers winning a Super Bowl.
But this was something special for us.
And to share it with you was pretty fun.
It was great.
We had a ball and we did.
And, I want to know how many people were in the locker room, how big is the locker room and how many people were in there, because it seems like the whole world was there.
I knew she would start asking locker room questions.
Clean.
Don't go any further than that.
No, it's it's it's a big room.
But I like it that, you know, because, you know, the showers are going and so forth.
It was like a sauna in there, right?
So everybody was sweating.
You could tell some of the interviews were sweating.
I got the impression from some of the live interviews last night, and then seeing the tapes of the interviews today, some of the players grasped it immediately and the others were still like it and it hadn't set in yet.
It seemed like it.
You mentioned that Roethlisberger shot.
That was the first time you saw that.
He just sort of, sort of sat down and took this all in before he could just get it back up again, right.
He was one of the last to change, too.
When we, came in, it was kind of in waves.
I mean, you were in for a while, then we went in.
We had a lot of really close and personal access to a lot of guys who might not get the attention of the Hines Ward.
The Ben Roethlisberger was great, and they were also so gracious.
And because of, you know, what was the feeling?
I talked to Jerome about his life today on one of our newscasts, and I said, are you having any second thoughts about retiring?
And he said, absolutely not.
This was this was the way for for him to go out.
Was there a lot of talk in the locker room afterwards and on that field about doing it for the bus?
It's funny you should mention, Stacey, because in our next piece, we talk with Dan Kreider, who has led the way for Jerome for the last six seasons, and he pondered that a little bit.
Well, why don't we go ahead and take a look?
I can take a look.
Dave, the Pittsburgh Steelers just won the Super Bowl.
What are you going to do now?
That's obvious.
I'm going to Kennywood.
Yeah yeah yeah yeah I'm trying to succeed.
Couldn't do it.
Couldn't do it.
Yes, but the Pittsburgh crowd and crazy.
They're just crazy to me.
You know what a lot of people take for granted when they say they had the best fans in the world.
If you've seen all them terrible towels like this were swinging the day, you know, the Pittsburgh Steelers truly have the number one fans in the world.
We appreciate them so much.
Youre a hometown guy.
Bringing it back to the Burg.
You know what people ask me how I felt if I tried to put it in the world, to put it in the words, I'd be cheating myself.
Yeah, it means so much.
I went through so much in my career, and the people of Pittsburgh and my family that truly stood by me, knowing the history and tradition of this organization and what it means to get this trophy.
It signifies everything that the Pittsburgh Steelers is about, and I'm just happy to be a part of it.
Being a Pittsburgh guy.
Now, at any point, are you going to Disneyworld or would you go to Kennywood?
I'm going to Kennywood, baby.
Hey, they got that thing right down there.
I'm going straight to Kennywood.
That's where I'm going.
Me and the family, baby.
Tell me, what you're thinking.
This is great.
You know, this is every.
This is, unbelievable.
This is one of the main reason why I came back on my last.
I've thought of going to have it for years, like, four years ago, but it didn't.
But, you know, I'm here and we're sitting on top right now.
I'm glad.
Kind of ironic.
It's in Detroit.
You're right, you're right.
What do you.
Jeff?
Watch out Super Bowl Champ coming through.
Got it.
Dave, I know this may seem a little strange, but it's been a lifelong dream of mine that if I ever got to a Super Bowl, I would do snow angels in the confetti on the field.
That dream has come true.
What can get better than this?
I'm going to Kennywood.
Will there be a Super Bowl tattoo now?
Yes, there will.
All the defensive players, I don't know, but, we all got one in mind when there.
We narrowed it down to a couple of them, but, we're going to do that next week.
Where is it going to be?
You know, I ain't got that much room left.
Maybe.
Maybe the thumb.
No, not you got one for the thumb now.
Probably the shoulder Was today about the fans.
I mean, it almost seemed like you had a 12th man out there.
Almost like a home game.
Yeah, it was.
It was incredible.
I mean, coming into that stadium seeing all those terrible towels flying around it was awesome.
So we've been playing on the road for how many weeks and felt good to have kind of a home crowd.
You led the way all year.
Tell us about today.
Well, you guys just kept playing.
You know, we started slow on offense, and unfortunately, we were able to still be up at halftime and, knew the second half had to be different.
We had to come out and make some big plays and give you guys credit.
They did that and defenses shut them down.
You know, kind of mixed feelings going into this with Jerome sort of leading for so many years, having him behind you a little uncertain, maybe the future.
Yeah.
You know what, we were just concerned about winning this game, and, you know, you wanted to win a championship.
And for him, it's the perfect way to go out.
And, you know, it's been a real privilege for me to block for him, for, you know, the last six years.
And, just play with this guy.
He's a great guy and, class act.
And it's been a real privilege.
Any chance you're going to Disneyworld?
Or maybe Kennywood?
I don't know, I know I didn't get that question out there, but, I don't know.
I might take some time, though.
That's for sure.
You deserve it.
Congratulations.
Thank you again.
Tell us how you're feeling.
Euphoric.
Totally euphoric.
I'm so proud.
And I'm just so happy for Clark because it's a dream realized.
You know, when you're a little kid and you sit on the side of the curb and you dream one day, I. When I grow up, I'm going to.
And Clark said, you know, mom, when I go pro, the reason I want to go and just play football because I really want to just go to the Super Bowl, that is the ultimate prize.
And today he won that prize.
Just getting up in the morning sometimes is a huge feat for these guys, and they work so hard from composing all year.
They shut up.
Yeah, but right now, today, it has to be all worth it.
It's worth it.
And he even said that.
Isn't this worth it?
And it is.
Huge Every time you're out there running by yourself in the hot sun, lifting weights, no one's around.
Everybody is at a barbecue or doing something else that's more fun.
You know, you think about all those times and you know, you come back here and you think about, was it all worth it?
And it always is.
Which was what did you think about the crowd today?
I mean, it was almost like a home game at times.
Oh, it was a home game.
We came out.
It was just there was a sea of yellow towels and everybody was swinging them till the arm fell off.
And, you know, I'm gonna join them now.
I'm gonna swing them terrible towels.
What's up?
What would it be?
We'd be surprised to know that only a sister could tell us about Clark Hagan's only a sister.
You can be brutal.
It's okay.
But he wouldn't.
He used to like to, drown me in the pool when they were growing up.
So he was always made it through.
He was practicing even back.
Exactly.
Tell me how you're feeling.
Oh, man.
Words can't describe that, man.
It's just like a dream come true.
We are world champions who are back at any point.
Are you going to go to Disney World?
Absolutely.
I go every year.
Take the kids down there.
Come here Justin.
I take the kids down there and we go and again say, we're going to Disney World.
He cant talk yet, but you know The Super Bowl 40 is over.
The Steelers are once again world champions.
Hines Ward is the MVP.
But I don't think he's going to get his car.
Well he can't get very far without these.
You guys did come back in separate vehicles that, we won't talk about where I got to talk about this, but we do have this.
This is that actual confetti.
Confetti were rolling in on Ford Field.
It's a good souvenir.
It is a good souvenir.
I'm thinking we can get a better one when they send us to Hawaii for the Pro Bowl.
Oh, yeah?
Yeah, yeah, I'm sure they're going to.
Yeah.
I'm not sure whether they really will or not.
We talked first of all, there was there was a great, I thought, bite from Clark Hagans that you had in there.
And that's about the amount of time and effort these players put in to reach this goal.
And for all of the other teams, they don't make it.
We heard that over and over again from Hines Ward on down to the practice squad.
These guys, I mean tomorrow they're in the gym.
I mean it's that serious for them.
And we talk about staying connected all the time.
They're so connected to the Rooneys that whole organization.
It's it's just unbelievable.
Was there any talk in the locker room?
Did anyone talk about their nerves?
Did anyone talk back to the locker room with you?
Yeah, yeah.
Back to the locker room.
No.
We're people I mean, did anyone say to you, you know, we're a little bit nervous for a short time there?
Not really.
I didn't get that impression.
I think Hines Ward said it this morning.
Did he?
Did he really?
I didn't hear that.
But, I was a little nervous.
I think we all were, but I, I get to get the impression that Bill Cowher has them in such a confident state that it didn't seem, you know, if you talk to them about it didn't seem like the real art of his coaching, the real art of his motivation had to come in when they had lost that game to Cincinnati, and then they turned it around from that.
Yeah, like he said.
And you know, in the news conference, that's like it wasn't long ago we were seven and five and right on the verge.
What are you all of you kept talking about it here in your reports and that's that sea of yellow towels out there.
What we haven't really talked about were how the Pittsburgh fans, where we have about a minute left, I liked it up to an hour ago when we were fighting that sea of fans on the Ohio Turnpike to get back here.
That's why we were so late.
Everything there beep.
They were beeping horns from Detroit all the way back to Pittsburgh.
And that's why we're so late getting back here.
But you know what?
Someone told me here tonight that they couldn't tell in the ABC coverage how loud it was.
When.
When it was third down.
Brutal.
When it was third down for the Seahawks, it was like you were at Heinz Field.
It was.
It was deafening.
The other part is the number of Pittsburghers who went to Detroit and didn't have a ticket, weren't planning to be able to get a ticket, but wanted to be there with that team.
Yeah.
And that the Ford field has big giant glass walls.
And I would be walking down and you'd look out into the some of the main, you know, entrances outside.
And there were another 20,000 Steeler fans out there.
You know, just usually that's me.
So I was so happy to be walking out this top.
Oh yeah.
What a thrill for both of you to be able to go there and to be in the game, to be able to see it and then to partake in all the festivities immediately.
So great for Pittsburgh.
Oh, absolutely.
Dave Hallewell Michael Bartley, Tonia Caruso, thank you.
And thank you for joining us.
