- My name is Evan Gregory and I'm a garden supervisor here at Cheekwood.
This is our seventh annual Orchids in the Mansion display.
As you enter the mansion, you'll come into the foyer where you'll see a sweeping staircase that will be adorned with orchids that will change from pink to white.
Once you get to the top of the stairs, you'll enter the Loggia and you'll see our magical orchid display.
This year the concept for our orchid display is a series of house frames where in each room the color palette actually changes.
So we have about 50 native orchids throughout Tennessee.
Our native orchids are actually terrestrial, so they'll actually grow from the soil.
The orchids we've used here in this display are actually epiphytes, so they'll grow in trees or rocks, and they'll use their aerial roots to absorb nutrients and water from the air.
Orchids make great house plants because they bloom for a long time with their showy unique flowers.
Orchids can symbolize a lot of different things such as elegance, beauty, and love.
Our orchid display will be through March 2nd.
And while you're here, you should also check out a beautiful new exhibit of paintings that were inspired by a book from one of Nashville's most famous authors.
- So here we are on the second floor of Cheekwood in one of the two galleries where the 10 paintings by Becky Suss entitled The Dutch House are on view.
These are inspired by Anne Patchett's book of the same name, the Dutch House, published in 2019.
I think people who have read the novel coming to Cheekwood looking at these paintings may find that there are some aspects that they remember from the novel, some details that they think about, some narrative that they think about, but those who have not read the book or those who are yet to read the book are also going to be inspired by the interiors, the incredible detail that are, that are depicted through the artist's work.
We hope visitors will have a chance to experience Dutch House here at Cheekwood.
It's a wonderful escape on a cold gray day to see these brightly colored paintings with green leaves and flowering bushes, in many of them.
The exhibition will be up here through March 16th.
