Historian John Monsky details the history of the first American troops to land in Paris during WWI. They arrive on July 3rd, and on July 4th thousands of Parisians gather to cheer them on as they march to the tomb of Lafayette. On stage with him are two of the flags carried by the U.S. Army in Paris on that day, as well as Broadway performers singing George M. Cohan's "Over There."

With thousands of Parisians cheering them on, an American battalion marches to the tomb of Lafayette and declares, "Lafayette, we are here."
Tonight on this stage, we have two flags, carried by the 1st division, 16th infantry, 2nd battalion of the United States Army in Paris.
[music swells] [audience applauds] Let us take you back to July 4th, 1917, with those flags from that moment.
