(bright gentle music) - [Narrator] Did you know there's an unfinished painting depicting the moment that ended the American Revolution?

The work of the "American Commissioners of the Preliminary Peace Negotiations with Great Britain" was painted by Benjamin West.

West, an American-born painter, was a founding member of the Royal Academy of Arts in Britain, and King George III's official Painter of History.

The painting depicts the Treaty of Paris of 1783, which was the peace agreement that ended the Revolutionary War.

It features American representatives, John Jay, John Adams, Benjamin Franklin, Henry Laurens, and William Temple Franklin, but none of the British delegates.

Due to the intense nature of the negotiations, the British delegation refused to pose for their half of the portrait.

As a result of their refusal, Benjamin West was never able to complete the painting, but he would go on to paint other famous works, like "Penn's Treaty with the Indians" and "The Death of General Wolfe".
