I'VE ALWAYS PAINTED MORE AS A STRESS-RELIEF, AS OPPOSED TO HAVING IT BE MY LIFE.

THEN FRANK AND I WERE MARRIED, WE TOOK A TRIP OVER TO ITALY, AND I FELL IN LOVE WITH MOSAICS.
WE'D JUST FINISHED WINE-TASTING, THE SUN WAS SHINING, IT WAS JUST A GLORIOUS FALL AFTERNOON.
SO WE'RE WALKING DOWN THE STREET OF MONTEPULCIANO, AND I LOOKED UP AND MAYBE ABOUT 10 OR 12 FEET ABOVE THE GROUND WAS THIS MOSAIC SIGN IN FRONT OF A BOUTIQUE HOTEL.
AND THE SUN HIT THE GOLD, HIT MY EYE, AND IT WAS JUST LIKE, THIS LIGHT.
AND I THOUGHT, "OH, MY GOSH, I'VE GOTTA DO SOMETHING WITH THIS.
I'VE GOT TO DO SOMETHING WITH THIS."

WHEN I ILLUSTRATE, I ILLUSTRATE ON THE DIAGONAL.
SO THEN WHAT IS STARTED TO DO WAS TAKE SHEETS OF GLASS, CUT LONG, THIN, STRIPS, SET THEM ON THE DIAGONAL THAT THEN WOULD EMULATE MY ILLUSTRATION STYLE.
AND THAT, I MEAN, IT JUST ALL CLICKED AT THAT POINT.

THE GLASS I USE IS HANDMADE GLASS.
IT'S MADE IN THE LAUREL HIGHLANDS OF PENNSYLVANIA AT A GLASS STUDIO CALLED YOUGHIOGHENY.
TO GIVE YOU AN IDEA, EACH PIECE OF GLASS IS AN ORIGINAL PIECE OF ART ITSELF.
LOOK AT THIS PURPLE, THIS DEEP PURPLE WITH THE WHITE STRIATIONS.
ONCE I'VE GOT THE ILLUSTRATION FINISHED, I'LL CHOOSE THE GLASS I WANNA USE FOR THE GLASS PAINTING, AND THEN THE CUTTING GLASS PROCESS BEGINS.

SO, GLASS HAS BEEN CUT, I NOW HAVE MY PALETTE, AND AS I BUILD PIECE UPON PIECE, YOU'LL SEE THIS PETAL START COMING TO LIFE.

ALTHOUGH MOSAIC'S AT THE BASIS OF IT, IT'S STILL A TRUE, UNIQUE ART FORM FOR ME -- THE TECHNIQUE, THE STYLE -- NO ONE ELSE IS DOING IT.
I BUTT JOINT THE PIECES, BECAUSE TO ME, GROUT STOPS YOUR EYE.
YOU MAY NOT REALIZE IT, BUT IT'S ALMOST LIKE A PERIOD AT THE END OF A SENTENCE, AND I DIDN'T WANT THAT.
I WANTED TO BE ABLE TO PAINT WITH GLASS, AND THAT FLOW COMES FROM BEING ABLE TO BUTT JOINT THE PIECES, SO YOU DON'T HAVE THAT VISUAL SEPARATION FROM PIECE TO PIECE.

I CAN'T FORGET THAT MOMENT, I WILL NOT FORGET THAT MOMENT.
SO WHAT I DO, IN EACH OF MY GLASS PAINTINGS, I INCORPORATE A PIECE OF THE GOLD SMALTI.
AND SMALTI IS THE GLASS THAT'S USED IN THE CLASSICAL SETTING MOSAICS.
AND AS YOU CAN SEE HERE -- THIS IS GOLD ON ONE SIDE, AND THEN THEY'VE GOT IT ON TOP OF BLUE TO GIVE IT MORE DEPTH AS THEY CREATE IT.
SO I ALWAYS INCORPORATE A TINY, TINY PIECE OF THIS IN MY GLASS PAINTING, AND IT'S TO REMIND ME OF THAT INSPIRATION, TO REMIND ME HOW QUICKLY OUR LIVES CAN CHANGE FOR THE BETTER IN A SECOND, IF WE JUST FOLLOW THAT INSPIRATION.
SO EACH GLASS PAINTING WILL HAVE ONE OF THESE PIECES OF SMALTI IN IT, AND I PLACE IT -- FOR INSTANCE, IN THIS FLOWER, I THINK ABOUT, "OKAY, IF THE SUN WERE TO KISS THIS FLOWER, WHERE WOULD IT BE?"
AND THAT'S WHERE I PLACE THE SMALTI.

I'M OFTEN ASKED, WHO INSPIRES ME AS AN ARTIST, AND WHEN I THINK OF THE MASTERS, FOR INSTANCE, I THINK OF RENOIR.
I MEAN, IT GOES BACK YEARS AGO, WHEN I WAS STUDYING AT CCAD, I FELL IN LOVE WITH RENOIR.
AND HIS PAINTINGS, I MEAN, I COULD STAND IN FRONT OF THEM JUST TOTALLY IMMERSED AND MESMERIZED BY THE BEAUTY, BUT THEN WHEN I LEARNED HIS PHILOSOPHY, THAT'S WHEN I REALLY FELL IN LOVE WITH HIS WORK.
HE WAS PAINTING A VERY DARK TIME TOO, AND HIS PHILOSOPHY WAS, THERE'S ENOUGH DARKNESS IN THE WORLD, I DON'T WANT TO BRING MORE.
SO HIS WORK WAS PRETTY.
HE SAYS, "I WANT TO PAINT PRETTY THINGS.
I WANT TO BRING 'PRETTY' INTO THE WORLD."
AND THAT'S HOW I FEEL.
I FEEL THAT, AS A PERSON, I WAS CREATED TO CREATE WORK THAT BRINGS LIGHT, THAT BRINGS HOPE TO BRING A SENSE OF HEALING, AND I BELIEVE IN THE CONNECTION BETWEEN ART AND HEALING.
SO IT'S MY AMBITION TO BRING INTO THE HEALTHCARE INDUSTRY, MORE INFORMATION ABOUT ART AND HEALING, AND THE IMPORTANCE OF THAT CONNECTION.

TWO YEARS AGO, WHEN OUR STATE, OHIO, STARTED CLOSING DOWN, BECAUSE OF THE PANDEMIC, I WAS HAUNTED BY THE THOUGHT OF THE HEALTHCARE WORKERS GOING INTO THE HOSPITALS WILLINGLY, TO CARE FOR PEOPLE.
LOVED ONES, WHO'S CARING FOR THEM?
AND WHO'S SAYING "THANK YOU"?
AND WHO'S SAYING "WE APPRECIATE YOU."
SO I WAS MOVED TO DO SOMETHING.
THAT'S WHEN I CAME UP WITH THE CONCEPT FOR "GARDEN OF GRATITUDE."
SO WHAT I DID WAS, I IDENTIFIED 118 DIFFERENT CHARACTERISTICS THAT I SAW IN THE HEALTHCARE WORKERS -- EVERYTHING FROM COURAGE TO RESILIENCE, INNER BEAUTY, COMPASSION.
AND I THEN DID RESEARCH AND FOUND FLOWERS THAT SYMBOLIZE EACH OF THESE CHARACTERISTICS.
SO, "A GARDEN OF GRATITUDE" IS AN EXHIBITION OF GLASS PAINTINGS THAT WILL BE TOURING OHIO HOSPITALS AND THE UNIVERSITY OF KENTUCKY TO THANK OUR, WHAT I CALL "WOUNDED HEALERS."

I ALMOST EXCLUSIVELY WORK IN OIL.
I DO FREQUENTLY BRING IN METALLIC ELEMENTS TO MY WORK, LIKE GOLD LEAF AND ORIGAMI PAPER TO ADD AN EXTRA COLOR OR TEXTURE ELEMENT.
I LIKE THE EXPRESSIVE QUALITIES OF COLOR.
SINCE A LOT OF MY WORK IS SO HUMANISTIC, IT'S IMPORTANT TO ME TO TRY AND COMMUNICATE CERTAIN THINGS THROUGH COLOR.
I THINK IT WAS THE PORTRAITURE ASPECT THAT ATTRACTED ME TO -- 'CAUSE IT SEEMED LIKE INFINITE POSSIBILITIES, 'CAUSE EVERYONE LOOKS DIFFERENT -- DIFFERENT LINEAGES, DIFFERENT COLORS TO PULL FROM, DIFFERENT EXPRESSIONS -- THAT REALLY HIT HOME FOR ME.

THE FOCUS ON INTERNET MEMES WAS KIND OF AN ACCIDENT, TO BE HONEST.
I WAS AT A POINT WHERE I HAD BEEN STRUGGLING WITH ART-MAKING FOR A FEW YEARS, AND I WAS UNINSPIRED, AND I WANTED TO PIVOT MY WORK TOWARDS DOING MORE PORTRAITS.
I THINK THAT'S MORE MY WHEELHOUSE.
AND I SAW MEMES AS A WAY TO PRACTICE DOING PORTRAITS AND EXPRESSIONS WITHOUT BEING BOGGED DOWN BY TOO MUCH MEANING, PLUS, I JUST THOUGHT THE MEMES WERE FUNNY.
I JUST THOUGHT IT'D BE FUNNY TO DO.
AND THEN WHEN I THOUGHT ABOUT IT FURTHER, I THOUGHT IT WAS A WORTHY TOPIC BECAUSE MEMES HAVE BECOME THIS WAY OF PEOPLE -- OF CONNECTING PEOPLE, RELATING TO EACH OTHER.
YOU KNOW, AS RIDICULOUS AS THEY ARE, THEY HAVE CASUALLY BECOME THIS NEW FORM OF COMMUNICATION, AND THAT IS FASCINATING TO ME.
ESPECIALLY WHEN WE THINK ABOUT HOW MANY OF THE MORE POPULAR MEMS FEATURE BLACK FACES, IT'S IMPORTANT FOR US TO DOCUMENT MEME SIN GENERAL, AND THEN ALSO TO LOOK INTO WHICH PICTURES WE DECIDED TO USE.
IT MAKES A POINT IN THE CONVERSATION OF HOW BLACK AMERICANS PARTICIPATE IN AND CONTINUE TO DEFINE THINGS IN OUR CULTURE, AND MEMES ARE A HUGE PART OF THAT.

OR MAKE A SERIES.

THAT'S REALLY IMPORTANT TO ME.
I DON'T LIKE THE WHOLE, "OH, I DID IT 'CAUSE I FELT LIKE IT."
WELL, WHY DO YOU FEEL LIKE IT?
THAT'S REALLY IMPORTANT FOR ME TO BE ABLE TO EXPLAIN TO SOMEBODY.
IT'S NEVER JUST A PAINTING OF A SKULL OR A HEART.
I KNOW MY WORK IS VERY STRAIGHTFORWARD, AND THE NARRATIVE CAN BE A LITTLE BIT MORE HIDDEN, BUT THERE IS ALWAYS A CERTAIN REASON WHY I'M REEXAMINING A CERTAIN SUBJECT TO THE POINT OF EXHAUSTION.
IT'S JUST -- THERE'S JUST SOMETHING ABOUT IT THAT'S REALLY INTERESTING, AND NORMALLY IT BOILS DOWN TO CONNECTIVITY OR EXPRESSING A DEEPLY PERSONAL EMOTION.

WHY THEY PICKED OUR BARN, I HAVE NO IDEA, BUT WE SAID, "SURE, WHY NOT?"

WE WILL, UM, JUST DRIVE THROUGH COUNTIES ALL OVER OHIO AND TRY TO FIND BARNS THAT ARE CLOSE TO A HIGHWAY, OR CLOSE TO A ROAD THAT'S HEAVILY TRAFFICKED, WHERE PEOPLE WILL BE ABLE TO SEE THESE BARNS UP CLOSE, AND THEY'LL BE VERY EASILY APPROACHABLE AND ACCESSIBLE FOR PEOPLE.
UM, AND SO WE THOUGHT THIS WAS A PERFECT BARN, AND WE'RE SO GRATEFUL THAT THE FERGUSONS WERE OPEN TO PARTNERING WITH US ON THIS.

SO THE WAY THIS PROCESS WORKS, HOW IT REALLY GETS STARTED, IS THERE'S A LOT OF RESEARCH THAT GOES INTO IT.
WE WANT TO PICK AN IMAGE OR A PHOTO OR A PORTRAIT THAT'S GOING TO BE THE MORE HISTORICALLY ACCURATE.
SO WE DO THE RESEARCH, AND THEN WE WORK WITH GRAPHIC DESIGNER DAVID BROWNING TO COME UP WITH A CONCEPT OR A DESIGN, AND THEN SCOTT HAGAN WILL UTILIZE THAT DESIGN FOR HIS LARGER MURAL.

ALL THE ARTWORK IS DONE BY HAND, SO IT'S REALLY IMPORTANT TO ME.
>> WE WANTED TO HONOR THE EASTERN SHAWNEE TRIBE AND THE SHAWNEE TRIBE WITH THIS -- WITH THIS MURAL.
WE KNOW THAT OHIO HAS A VERY RICH AMERICAN INDIAN HISTORY, BUT IN THE 19th CENTURY, A LOT OF THE TRIBES THAT WERE NATIVE TO OHIO WERE FORCIBLY REMOVED.
WELL, TECUMSEH IS BEST KNOWN, UM, AS A SHAWNEE WAR-LEADER, AND HE IS MOST FAMOUS FOR CREATING A COALITION OF TRIBES IN THE NORTHWEST TERRITORY TO COMBAT AGAINST THE WHITE SETTLERS IN THE REGION.
SO NO PHOTOGRAPHS OF TECUMSEH EXIST TODAY, SO WE RELIED ON PORTRAITS THAT WERE DONE OF HIM IN THE EARLY 19th CENTURY.
THE ONE THAT WE'LL SEE ON ETH SIDE OF THE BARN ACTUALLY COMES FROM THE CHICAGO FILED MUSEUM.
WE ALWAYS GREW UP KNOWING HIM AS "TECUMSEH" AND THAT'S REALLY THE WAY THAT ENGLISH SPEAKERS CAME TO KNOW HIM, BUT IF YOU WERE TO LISTEN TO SOMEONE FROM THE SHAWNEE TRIBE SAY HIS NAME, IT WOULD'VE BEEN PRONOUNCED "TECUMTHE."
YOU'LL SEE ABOVE HIS NAME ON THE BARN, A PANTHER SURROUNDED BY A SERIES OF STARS.
AND THE PANTHER IS ACTUALLY FROM THE EASTERN SHAWNEE TRIBE'S SEAL.
AND THE STARS IS FROM THE SHAWNEE TRIBE'S SEAL.

OUR MISSION IS TO SPARK DISCOVERY OF OHIO'S STORIES, AND WITHIN THE OHIO HISTORY BARN PROJECT, IT IS REALLY A PERFECT ENCAPSULATION OF THAT.
THE IDEA IS THAT, WHEN YOU DRIVE BY, OR YOU WALK BY AND YOU SEE THIS BARN, IT WILL INSPIRE YOU TO DISCOVER A LITTLE BIT MORE ABOUT YOUR OWN COMMUNITY, THE HISTORY THAT'S IMPORTANT TO YOU, AND TO HAVE PRIDE IN WHERE YOU COME FROM.

THERE ACTUALLY IS THE YOUNGER GENERATION, I'VE NOTICED OVER THE PAST 10, 12 YEARS, THAT THEY'VE GOTTEN INTO, LIKE, THE BOURBON AND SCOTCH AND WHISKEY, AND THEY'VE GOTTEN AWAY FROM LIKE, BUD LIGHTS AND BUDWEISERS.
SO I THINK THAT'S A LOT OF THE CUSTOMERS WE GET.

>> I WAS ALWAYS GOOD WITH MY HANDS.
I MEAN, ATTENTION TO DETAIL -- A LOT OF PEOPLE TELL ME THAT, THAT I ALWAYS PUT IN THE EXTRA EFFORT TO MAKE IT LOOK NICE, YOU KNOW?
ROB GOT MARRIED, AND HE HAD A BOURBON BAR AND A CIGAR BAR.
WE USED THE BARRELS AND MADE TABLES OUT OF THEM.
THEN WE DIDN'T KNOW WHAT TO DO WITH THEM, SO WE STARTED CREATING DIFFERENT PRODUCTS.
AND I THOUGHT IT WAS GONNA BE A HOBBY -- THEY'RE ALL ABOUT RECYCLING, AND REUSABLE PRODUCTS, AND SO WE STARTED GETTING INTO THAT, AND THERE WERE THE WHISKEY BARRELS.
THAT WAS PROBABLY, MAYBE, SIX MONTHS AFTER WE GOT GOING, WE SAID, "YOU KNOW, THERE'S SOMETHING HERE."
AND THEN WE WERE LIKE, "WOW, WE ARE -- THIS IS -- THIS IS A FUNCTIONING BUSINESS NOW, AND IT'S JUST GOING CRAZY."
STARTED OUT JUST WITH TWO PEOPLE, NOW IT'S, YOU KNOW, SEVEN PEOPLE WITH ME AND THE WIFE, MY NEPHEW, AND HE'S MARRIED TO MY NIECE, YOU KNOW, SO IT'S -- EVERYONE'S PRETTY MUCH A FAMILY.
>> DARREL AND NANCY HAVE LITERALLY BEEN MY SECOND PARENTS SINCE I WAS ABOUT 10.
DARREL'S SO CREATIVE AND COOL TO BE AROUND, AND YOU LEARN SO MUCH.
>> WHEN WE STARTED, LIKE, JUST SOME OF THE STUFF WE WERE ATTEMPTING TOP MAKE, I WAS LIKE, "I DON'T KNOW HOW WE'RE GONNA DO THAT."
'CAUSE THE -- I -- YOU KNOW, WORKING WITH WOOD, AND THINGS THAT ARE SQUARE, AND LEVEL, AND FLUSH, AND PLUMB -- IT'S A LOT DIFFERENT WORKING WITH THE BARRELS.
EVEN JUST GETTING THE RIGHT BARREL, MAKING SURE THE BANDS ARE LINED UP, LIKE SOME BANDS, THEY MIGHT BE OFF A HALF INCH.
AND YOU WANT IT TO LINE UP AND BE UNIFORM.
>> WE MAKE AN A-FRAM WINE RACK, AND UM, WE TAKE THE WHISKEY AND WE PUT WINE BOTTLES ON IT, BUT -- AND THEN THERE'S BOTTLE OPENERS.
WE MAKE A STATE BOTTLE OPENER, WITH A MAGNET THAT'S BEHIND THE OPENER, SO WHEN YOU OPEN YOUR BOTTLE, IT STICKS -- YOU CAN'T SEE IT, IT'S BURIED UNDERNEATH THE WOOD, BUT IT STICKS TO THE, UH, PIECE OF THE WOOD WHEN YOU OPEN YOUR BOTTLE, SO KIND OF CREATIVE.
YOU KNOW, PEOPLE REALLY LIKE THAT.
AND WE GOT THE HALF-BARREL HIDEAWAY.
AND THEN WE GOT THE HALLWAY TABLE, AND WE HAVE A STAVE WITH LASERED, LIKE, "BOURBON MADE ME DO IT," ON IT, AND DIFFERENT SAYINGS.
THE DOG DISHES -- WE CAN MAKE 'EM ANY SIZE, ANY HEIGHT.
BUT IF YOU HAVE A CAT WE'VE MADE SOME FOR CATS.
AND THEN WE MAKE A HALF-BARREL, QUARTER-BARREL, UH, FOR PET TOYS.
WE'VE MADE DOG BEDS.
THERE'S A LOT OF THINGS, IT'S -- IT'S NEVER ENDING.
>> WE DO, UH, WEDDING BARRELS WITH THE CARDS, AND THE SLIT AT THE TOP, AMD WE MAKE A DOOR ON THE SIDE.
AND WE MADE A, UH, DANCING BARREL, FOR A, LIKE, IRISH DANCING, AND WE PUT, LIKE, HARDWOOD TOPS ON THE BARRELS, AND THEY DANCED ON TOP OF THE BARRELS AND STUFF LIKE THAT.
AND, UH, WE MADE GRAPE-CRUSHING BARRELS.
>> WE MAKE THE WINE BOTTLES THAT HOLD THE THING THAT THE GLASSES FIT ON IT.
IT'S A NICE CENTERPIECE, AND LIKE, A LOT OF WOMEN HAVE BEEN BUYING THOSE, AND PUTTING THEM RIGHT ON THEIR TABLE.
THESE PRODUCTS IS IT'S ONE-OF-A-KIND, HANDMADE, THERE'S NO PATTERNS.
WHEN YOU MAKE IT, THAT -- YOU MADE THAT.
AND THE WORST PART ABOUT IT, IS IT'S ONE-OF-A-KIND, HANDMADE, THERE'S NO PATTERNS.
YOU KNOW, SO IT'S A CATCH-22 THERE.
THERE IS A GOOD PROCESS.
>> FIRST, WE TAKE A BARREL APART.
AND THEN THAT'S ALWAYS A MESS, SO WE CLEAN THAT UP, AND THEN WE TAKE ITT IN HERE AND WE MARK WHAT WE HAVE TO MAKE, AND HOW MANY WE HAVE TO MAKE OF IT.
AND THEN I USUALLY FILL IN ALL THE CRACKS, LIKE, DRILLING THE HOLES, AND KIND OF PREPPING IT FOR THE SANDING PROCESS.
USUALLY I MAKE THE SMALLER TYPE OF PRODUCTS, LIKE THE BOTTLE OPENERS AND THE BOTTLE TOWERS.

IT REALLY IS, LIKE.
WHEN YOU GET DONE WITH IT, LIKE, NO ONE ELSE HAS DONE THAT, AND YOU TAKE A LOT OF PRIDE, YOU WALK OUT OF HERE, SENSE OF FULFILLMENT.
>> IT MAKES IT SPECIAL TO MAKE IT AND SEE HOW IT GOES, AND THEM TELLING YOU THAT IT WORKED OUT PERFECTLY, AND IT JUST MAKES EVERYONE HAPPY.
>> IT'S THE SMILES OFF THE CUSTOMERS -- THEY COME IN HERE AND GO, "WOW, THAT'S REALLY COOL."
AND THAT'S WHAT I DO.
I MEAN, I LOVE TO SEE THAT.
PEOPLE COME IN HERE AND PRAISE OUR WORK, AND THEY LOVE OUR STUFF, AND THEY -- THAT'S -- WORD OF MOUTH IS POWERFUL, YOU KNOW.
OR THEY'LL COME UP THEIR HOUSE AND SEE THE DOG DISH, AND THEY HAVE TO HAVE ONE, SO IT'S GOING GOOD THAT WAY.
>> WE HAVE A LOT OF FUN HERE.
IT'S NOT ALWAYS A WORK THING.
THERE'S A LOT OF LAUGHS, AND IT'S FUN TO MAKE THE PRODUCTS THAT WE MAKE, AND THE VISION THAT DARREL HASS FOR EVERYTHING, HOW ORGANIZED HE IS.
SO, LIKE, JUST BEING AROUND THOSE KIND OF PEOPLE ALWAYS MAKE YOU BETTER, ANYWAYS.
>> YOU FEEL AT HOME, REALLY, AND I'VE KNOWN THESE PEOPLE, LIKE, PRETTY MUCH MY WHOLE LIFE, SO -- WE ALL WANT TO MAKE EVERYTHING AS GOOD AS IT CAN BE.
