like this here that's made from powdered pigment mixed with a base and banner to form a sort of paste that hardens it's a great tool for artists because unlike paints you don't need a palette to mix colors you can do so right on your drawing board or paper just like we did last week when we painted that beautiful beach scene in just under 30 minutes well if you enjoyed last week's show then you're going to enjoy what we'll be doing today are you interested up for the challenge then stay right where you are because today we're painting with pastels [Music] Hello friends and welcome back to our studio you remember from the last episode how we drew that beautiful beach scene well I went back and I touched up a few of the details there as you can see I added some of the rocks and the crashing waves over it and some more details on the trees as you can see the pastel on it is still fresh so it would be great if when you're painting with pastels you do that in a room where there's plenty of room to move about and plenty of room to breathe because you do not want to be cramped in a room with all the pastel dust going around today we're going to do something similar but a little bit more challenging right here we're going to create another beach scene here but we're going to put some coconut trees here so typical of the place that we live in and possibly put in a small house here so since we know how much time we have left we're gonna do that rather quickly can you keep up the pace are you up for the challenge well let's do it friends again as you remember from the last show we had our Blues there we gonna start here for the beach scene there again with the using the size of the side of the pastel we can quickly cover very large surface there we're going to use minimal clouds today just a few and let's see I think yeah this would be good enough for the amount of space that we need for the sky portion of it and again we have the ocean here I think that should be enough for what we need to do for that here there we go okay now we did say that right here we're going to put some coconut tree so remember when we talked about using the background we used dark colors to cover the background therefore if my coconut tree is going to be here first I will need to add because between the leaves you are going to see the sky correct so a little bit more of that in between okay perfect and then we can do the base for the coconut tree there so if it's going to be right here let's say okay perfect then I can do it's gonna be here okay great just to have an idea of where I want to go with this and where I want to take this okay if my coconut tree is here and then I'm gonna have my house right here and as I mentioned in the last one we really don't have to be a slave to the details we can start and see where we're going to be putting everything and we move on from there that is the beauty of pastel so this is going to be our little beach house I don't know how much we're going to sell it for a bit right here it's going to be the columns and then we're going to have a little Street coming to this way right into the ocean so this is gonna be a beachfront property there great wonderful now as we started last time we had the yellow that's what did uh so we're gonna cover large areas with the yellow because this is where the land start for us and what did we do again for the yellow for the sand we added a little brown to it so that we could get that nice sand tone to it we can do this here as well and don't be afraid be free because the details can be added later on to create exactly what you need so I have that here now I'm going to start blending early because I want to position my painting with I want to put everything exactly where they should be so before doing that we did say that there'll be a few clouds so we'll put some right here just to give us that perception details there okay great now we'll start blending this is my horizon line right here and from there you can paint this here and this is a little too just plain blue for me I can add slightly this darker tone over it because I want the sky to look just right for me but still you want to distinguish it from the ocean so we're going to start blending from here cleverly avoiding the clouds because the clouds are gonna overlap over it afterwards great now I can take care of my clouds and make sure that they are puffy and nice just a few it's a beautiful day there remember the circular motions and try not to be monotonous by doing everything the same put yourself in the place where you're painting we do have an advantage now that we did not have a few years ago we have the digital camera now you can go to a location you take that picture you don't have to paint it just then and there you can take it back to your studio just like we are here and do whatever you want with it now we're moving rather quickly because we have to cover this large area here and instead of using one or two fingers like I was doing the sky I'm gonna use all three fingers in the front there so that I can cover this rather quickly because I want some Earth Tone here that's going to be the ground for the street great now the house is going to be here I know I try our typical tropical house I'm looking at some white and some yellows but before in front of the house we know some you love a nice little garden so again with the same idea with the background I'm just putting this here and later on during more the the other episodes we're gonna talk about perspective so you'll learn more about perspective how we start small here but as we're moving forward we go a little bit further here so we can have a nice little garden here with other trees but what interests me the most today is the coconut tree great so I can blend this rather quickly there because I want a backdrop to add whatever type of flowers that I want to plant in front of our little beach house again my centerpiece there is going to be my coconut tree so I'm adding the background to it well I'm going to put the leaves the Palms the branches there great okay we're moving rather quickly taking the white because we're going to start the roof there there we go using the side remember we broke the pastel in the last episode you can feel free to break your pastel sticks it's not a problem that can help you with more flexibility okay okay perfect I'm leaving some space between the front of the house so this is gonna be like a little patio or Gallery there and we're going to touch that up to blend it in there's my roof it's a very small house but again a beachfront property you don't need much space you do not need more space just a space to hang your hammock and hang by the breeze okay the base is there so I can put a roof over the house there again you have the power of suggestion with pastels so you don't have to draw or paint everything you can just suggest your mind will pick up what it is even from a distance foreign a little you don't have to do all of them got to protect yourself from the tropical rain there we go that will do fine for me now I'd like this the front of this house to have this yellow to it so I'm just gonna add a touch of yellow I know I did promise you a coconut tree but since this is going to be the center point for us we can leave it for a little bit longer and of course the door there we go okay now we're gonna plant our little garden there I just bought some my locations and they are great plants I love planting trees so now we can just suggest the front the top part and I'll tell you why okay now we're gonna do a coconut tree because we already have the base there so using the dark brown just to give me an idea of where I'll put my Palms fronts there there we go any little darker colors for the Shadows from this side and there we go we can blend that let's move down there we go now with our greens [Music] getting a nice little Caribbean feel to these paintings we want it to be just right [Music] of course the more advanced you get the more colors you'll get to choose from you could get a professional set aside from the basic set once you've graduated from this that's after a few episodes of watching channel 12's painting with pastels foreign [Music] remember we see that we're just suggesting the top part the reason why we are going to put a fence we need to protect a property from the street there again with that study of perspective as you get closer we'll leave that there for the gate and then we'll pick it up some more and our little gate of course if the gate is there we're just going to make the dough closer there need to be no trees separating there we go now again we added the green there for the little garden oh so much we can do with that again I'm sure your Garden's not just green yeah some flowers some beautiful flowers let's see I have a lot of colors in my palette there I can add some you see that makes such a big difference to the painting you have your bougainvilleas your flamboyant Rose any type of flowers you can think of we have such a great variety while we're living actually so we're not limiting ourselves great now we have the streets and I'm still not quite happy with the street there yet we can add things to it too and I have all this space here I can do a lot with it well let's say nice little Agave right here for example again we started the dark background and from there you see I can do whatever I want with it so my Garvey can come up again with the green over be free you can do whatever you want with this again if you only have one tone of green and you don't have the lighter one that's okay you can touch it up with yellow that's going to give you the lighter green play with your colors and see where they can take you it's like a wild adventure okay there we go great now I can quickly highlight some of this okay friends looks like we've reached the end of our journey and we do have a complete painting here now I'm happy with mine let's just sign our names here okay and we have a complete painting well this is it make sure you tune in next week as we take on a more challenging Mission are you up for it I sure am so be there and you don't miss it see you then [Music] [Music] foreign [Music] funding for this program is provided in part by the
