here because we are going to do the painting from the picture so what we're going to do here basically with the same size of paper that we've been working before we have the smaller size we are going to paint blue builds Castle here on this pastel paper using of course our pastel colors are you ready for it well let us begin we have our Skyline here right above we're just going to fill that in here like so not overpowering not too much we're gonna use our subdued blue and again it's amazing because the same principles apply for everything else that you do and if I wanted some clouds here in the background I can put them right here not too much there okay I just want to blend this in rather quickly before I start leaving my clouds intact I'm going around see this is Simplicity itself it's not a lot of work because I know the outline I know where I want to put the castle I'm just doing the background because it is so much harder when you have the picture there and then you adding the background afterwards and you have to work around that so once you have your background set you can basically put the picture on top of it and that works out so much nicer for you now we did have a few clouds and I want them to be on tinted so I'm gonna go over them again like this see a little gray at the bottom and get some Dimensions to your clouds so they're not just a little puffy white Cottons there without touching the gray I'm just moving the clouds up small little circles as we said before so that they don't look flat and after that I blend in the gray at the bottom and of course once you're done you can go back up and touch up the top now while we're doing this so fast remember the challenge is to do this in less than 30 minutes if you care to keep up with me I promise you great thanks you'll be so happy when you get there now moving quickly we have our castles here so we know that from here to here this is where the castle is going to be so we're just gonna fill this in like that because this is on stonework you never have to do anything for memory but memory can be such a great asset to you if you have all of those things that you've seen and you wanna put on paper and it's all there in your mind and you don't have a picture or something to remind you of it you can use that but if that fails you always have your point of reference as I have this picture here that I can use so now I see that I have the base for the castle there and that's not all because and the further on the back of the castle they have this Red Roof there that starts on this side and again we're not drawing we're not painting yet we're just suggesting at this point because we have time we're moving fast but we have time and at the bottom we have the part of the castle there like this these are columns and it forms an arch here and in Arch here and right here are you amazed that you can do so much in so little time well we have time so much more that we can do the spaces where the door opens at the bottom there is dark so we can fill this in here and we have four little windows in the front this can be here this can be here little windows one here and one here that have it that have us covered here perfect and on the top you have an indentation here and a notation here and one more here but we'll get back to this because this is stone work it's not a smooth surface we just laid the foundation for it and we can come back to it to make it happen I have my Shadows here where the arch is formed I'm just filling it in wonderful and there's a little walkway right here I can use that and you notice in front of the castle they have these trees there ficus bougainvilleas all of that same principles we are just putting the dark colors and we can put that in afterwards make it happen because this is all green here and we can work with that wonderful and there is a tree right here as the late painter Bob Ross we used to say a happy little tree so this is where we're gonna put our leaves anything to make it happen so it's taking shape so we're not worried we still have a little time left now the castle we put the Yellowstone work already we're just gonna blend in some of the brown for the stonework that is there before we blend it all in together wonderful now before I leave the foundation I am just going to smooth this out and then I will add my stonework on top of it because remember I want it to be as close to reality as possible while still remaining a work of art because you really don't want a photograph your digital camera should take care of that for you but you want it to be as close so that when people look at it there is no doubt they'll say wow that's a picture of that's a painting of the bluebeard's castle that's what it is no doubt about it okay I have that covered so now I'm still gonna take this lighter shade of brown now and I'm just gonna suggest some of the Stoneworks in the front because some of the bricks are showing through and you don't have to paint every single one of them you can just suggest here the ravages of time and I have my grays we're touching up over the brown and of course it is some of those little stones are slightly darkened in others and if you don't have the exact color to make it happen you blend it in and you make it happen for you so be free see what you're looking at and think how can I make that happen on the paper for me you can experiment and that's the beauty of pastels because you can do that as much as you want to and when you're done if you're happy with your painting you did a beautiful thing if not can get back to it and work on it some more it is your painting you can do whatever you want so I have suggested my Stones here without actually drawing them all I'm even using some of the used dust on my finger some of the excess there and suggesting Stoneworks wonderful now I'm blending the dough away assistant windows and don't worry they're not gonna stay that dark because they have some louvers in there that I can see and we can remedy that make it happen but in the meantime I just want to blend these parts in between that way they don't interfere with the whites after it's done and of course where my trees are going to be my little walkway there great now let's do the roofs while we're at it I'm blending this and I'm blending this side great wonderful now as I promised you some louvers on the windows can separate them like this and again you're just suggesting you're not painting suggesting and there is a mass standing up here and a smaller one here and another one here and this one has the U.S flags here and then this one the U.S Virgin Island flag we'll get back to that and make it happen here but before I want to blend in the white great okay window shutters one two one two one two I notice that they're not as blue as the pastel that I put there so is that a problem no not really because I am in complete control of my colors so if I want it to be lighter all I have to do is go over it with the white there and see instantly we got it just like that so there's never any to be afraid with your colors you can go back and work on it until you get exactly what you want if this is too light I go with another coat of white no problem whatsoever now just like this I had the Dark Shades here but it's not that dark inside there's actually a hallway here and I want to show the hallway so I just go over it softly with the white again just like that I take a quick second and look at your painting is it exactly where you want it to be at this point if not don't worry we have time we're still working on it if you're happy then you may pat yourself in the back after you wash your hands of course you do not want to stay in church wonderful okay now there's uh we have two doors at the front there one on the side one on that side just like that and my little walkway right here okay that's enough details for me for down below here now I want to take some times for my trees there's a little plaque right here right there perfect now my trees that I have set up already I have set up the undertone for and again remember you can use that for anything that you want to show that there's a fullness you can cover the background with this and then after that you make it happen the way that you want now I have and again let me place my book down for a second I am just dotting here just starting suggesting that we have leaves you can go how you want to okay we're just suggesting that we have leaves here okay and I use the front tip the side just as long as I get my impression that okay there is a full tree here and I have some leaves in it from a distance it looks beautiful close-up it looks beautiful so you can't lose with this and again remember we see that we have some bougainvilleas right there and some ficus trees now this is where the ones who painted the painting against the wall have the advantage because you had the solid backing and if you have a pastel easel and easel where you paint you can make sure you have a solid backing also that way it doesn't bounce with you so we got time we have time to make this happen for us remember once you highlight it takes your painting to a whole new level it creates the dimensions for you so that you do not have just one shade of green you want it to be as rich as possible without being too busy and you can do that by highlighting find out where your source of light is and make it happen we say that we have the U.S flags here and again because it's in the Wind can just make suggestions again just suggesting it's okay and then we have the USVI flag right here and again just suggesting now just because that mass here is why it does not mean that you cannot put a shadow on the line to Edge it there we go you may even outline your windows show where the shadow lays behind them that works out great with this just the edge of your pastel because you want clean cut lines there we go and if I look closely here there's a gate right in the front and it I'm using the corner of the pastel here to suggest and on this side as well again as close to reality as I can it goes here down down here down down great now we did say bougainvilleas and of course bougainvilleas have some nice beautiful little flowers that they display here such a beautiful island that we live in speaking of all three Virgin Islands of course we have all these beautiful flowers there that we can paint at will so you never have an excuse to say well I'm not motivated I'm not in the mood to paint because you have inspiration everywhere that you look some nice little white flowers here puts everything into perspective for us there there you have it following the lines along the edge a few white stones in the front and we're going it's coming along now you should be at the point where there is no mistaking identity to which building this is once you look at it you should be able to say well I know this one I've been there before that is the bluebeard's castle part of our history in the Virgin Islands wonderful making some steps here again suggestion wonderful now we are done I can look at it and I can say that this is where I want it to end up I started someplace different and I ended up right here I'm gonna put my name right here so that I could see that this painting is done fronts I'm happy are you happy with your painting well you should be but again if you're not we can keep working at it so don't lose us join us next time here back at our studio where we can take on our next challenge [Music] [Music] foreign [Music] funding for this program is provided in part by the Virgin Islands Council on the Arts [Music]
