capture scenes like this and place it on canvas or paper if yes this show is just for you I will show you in just under 30 minutes how you can paint this are you interested if yes don't go anywhere because today we are painting with pastels [Music] thank you before we can paint that beautiful beach scene we do need supplies and here in San Juan we have the frame up where we can get everything that we need let's go inside follow me and we can get all of our supplies [Music] it's Frantz Coulanges I'm an artist good to meet you I'm Dan home the owner of the framer oh great Mr Hall I am looking for some pastels can you help me out here as you can see we have a variety and I'll let you just pick and choose what you want oh I feel like a kid in a candy store here look at all the toys we have concierge that's a 48 set pastel right here as you can see there are a lot of colors in here for you to play with you have Rembrandts with 60 soft half pastels that can be very handy for you as well some of them have all of the same colors if you plan to use a lot of the same colors that is the one for you too you can use that as well we do have some water pastels but we are not going to use oil pastel in the show just so you know we have choices here you can for the show most likely we will be using something like this as you can see we have all of the basic colors in there that's enough for us to do what we are going to do now before we use The Pastels we need something to apply the pastel on if you are using paint you would need a canvas but for pasta we're going to use paper as you can see here we have the notebook the notepad there pastel from Strathmore you have a lot of pages to play with here about 24 sheets is that too small for you there are also the larger size this size here has an 18 by 24 with 24 sheets now you have everything that you need I have everything that I need now let's go back and paint that Beach [Music] welcome back to the studio friends as you can see we have everything that we need right here and I suggest you do the same also at home we have our papers password papers lined up the way that we want it to and from the store we got our board and as you can see I've secured it nicely against this part if you don't have an easel at home feel free to tape it to the wall that will do just fine as well now again coming back from hey Penny the beach you notice that it was a very easy scene to paint you mean I think so but you will see how we can do that from here we are going to start with our horizon line I'm gonna put that here here just like that here now you did notice there was a piece of land that went in like this and then it curves this way so this is basically going to be the layout of our painting simple enough for you we'll make it that way now this is going to be the sky this is going to be the ocean it does not get any easier than that what I'll do here I am going to start with the clouds from The Horizon I'm just going to lay it out here as it grips up a little bit higher and higher this is where my clouds will be not too much I love the Caribbean Blue look so I'm just gonna put a few clouds up there then I'll come back to the blue that I had originally or you could have other Touch of blue again I'm just playing with the colors here you should feel so free doing this because it is your painting this is all going to be my sky here and again I'm not restricted if I want a blue and the one that I have does not give it to me that is fine several things that I could do I could add white to it to make it lighter I could add a darker blue to some of the sections as you can see see this looks more like the sky that I am looking for so I will play with this here right over the blue that I originally applied and it's going to give me a very very nice texture once I am blending it in the end right here will be my horizon line so this is I want this to be a nice and straight line here great and I will put some here to cover because I want the beach to come up this way and curve this way for me so I'll leave that here like that and that hint of green that we have in the ocean I am going to choose this very light green right here for it and I'm gonna put that there just to mix with the blue and this is going to give me this really really nice effect from the front there not too much and the lighter blue that I started with originally I will highlight some here and some ragged over the green that I had applied at first are you filling it at this point it's okay because we still have to do the mixing afterwards but we want to do the layout first we want to see how everything will come together now one thing that you will notice when you looked at the beach we mentioned that the land faded in from the Horizon as a tip we are going to apply the dark pastel and I'm using the edge there just to cover this part right here because this is going to be the base and on top of that I could do whatever I want to over the dark colors I'm not applying too much of it I just want that background that backdrop once I mix it I could put whatever I want there see grapes coconut trees whatever I feel like it is my painting I am not mixing it yet but I want to put some a little white right here this is where the scent is going to be and again our sin is not just plain white but the reason I'm applying that is because whatever color that I'm putting there I want it to be very nice and Light so once I mix my yellow for the sand it's going to turn out great we did mention yellow and I have this nice yellow Arco right here that is going to touch over the white this will be my sand area right here again I'm applying that liberally here and two yellow for me still so I will add a touch of brown see the beauty of pastels you can add whatever you want on the paper and then when you're done it all comes together I'm not afraid I need I should use it great we'll mix that later now we did apply the black here so where the land touches the ocean and I want to create some Ridge there I will apply some of the dark brown while I have it here still just to show the rocks and again that same yellow right on top of it and there will still be a clear distinction between that and the sand on the beach now you start having an idea of what we are doing here but it's okay now I'll take a break and I want to accentuate that what we're doing here we are going to be blending I want to blend the blues that I put together and then I am going to add the clouds to it so we'll start from the top here again with circular motion I'm blending it together and you can see where the two blue comes together and what a nice texture what a nice tone that I get from that very nice view we're blending it and I'm blending around the clouds because once I finish my clouds I want them to be separate over the blue not part of it so that you have a clear distinction between the blue and the white blending here leaving the spaces in between I want it to blend and match evenly so I'm doing a really really nice job in being thorough by making sure that I touch every section while I still have the blue on my fingers I'm just gonna do the ocean as well we'll get back to the clouds later I'm just pushing my finger against the board really hard and making this line there my rise of mine now I am blending moving in this way and again the way you blend it that's the way it will look on the paper if you want to make your waves you can push it in a way that you make your wave again remember that I added other tones of blue and green so I want all these to come out so from here white meets the land I am pushing it hard on the paper and here comes my green see what a beautiful tone you get from there now you have this little Cove area here I'm not blending that flat because I want the curve to show and I am going to have my waves crashing there so I am following the curve along with my fingers green and blue mixing together so nicely and again with pastels you should avoid repetitive motions because your painting might get boring if you keep doing the same there we go we are almost there once we add the waves to that we will be all set but before we do now I'm going to use my pinky because we have that thin strip there that's the sand I am going to push on that I'm not worried yet about the lane I'm just doing the little sand right there on the beach with my pinky there we go now moving on to the my index because I have more space and this can be flat there I'm just blending it just like this you see how the brown the yellow and the white comes together to give you that Sandy tone and that's what you want and again that's the beauty of pastels you can get whatever colors that you want to and as you get more experience you'll be able to paint metallic things anything that reflect lights anything that you want to be able to do just that using your basic colors great now we have this so far I am just going to blend the part of the land that meets the ocean up and down motion of my index finger there so that I don't touch the sand for the beach I want to keep these separate we're moving we're moving in okay I like to leave this here for now and what I'm doing here in this empty space that I have here I'm removing some of the colors that I have on my fingers because I am going to paint and blend the clouds I will take the white pastel stick that I had here and I am going to touch my clouds again from The Horizon putting more of it and again remember do not be boring do not apply it all in the same two little crazy shapes clouds reaching up higher than the others wanting to be better than the others so we are moving up there was no limitation to the shapes that you can do here touch wherever you want just don't cover your Sky too much again same thing for the bottom there I'm blending this with one stroke where the ocean meets the sky and I'm going to start blending in circular motion so that I could have the Puffs in the class it's okay if some sections you have touches of blue add it to your clouds that's fine you can always go over it afterwards but by doing circular motions it looks so real so nice we're moving up with the others this is so relaxing after a long day and you're thinking this is almost as good as being there but I have a choice after finishing after painting this I can go back to the beach and enjoy it walk some more on my tan there we go and this last one here because every single one of them is part of your painting so do not neglect any section of your painting because it all comes together in the end and give you that really nice touch there we go we're almost there this is going to be a treat so I'm saving it for last just like dessert what I'll do here I'm going to put some of the crashing waves on the beach and again I'm using the side of my pastel stick here you have a nice little Cove here foreign great I'll leave this like that for now okay now we did have this as a background and again if you notice that your pastels are too much on the paper you can always do this and it flies away again remember make sure you have enough room in your studio to breathe or you could do this outside painting The Great Outdoors I'm just blending this rather quickly so that I could have time to put my plants now we are going to do some gardening I am going to start with the darker green that I have on my set there and from the distance really does not really matter too much the way you put your tree so I am just pushing the tip of the pastel against the paper to give it some shapes over the dot but I'm not covering everything I'm just hinting or suggesting that we have some trees there what type of trees well that would be up to your imagination I am leaving that up to your imagination at this point and I am just suggesting up until we get a little closer that's where we could add the different type of leaves that will make up our trees and not be afraid so if all you can do at this point is make dots on your paper that's fine because afterwards you can add the leaves and make it turn it into a sea grape a coconut tree I haven't seen banana trees this close to the ocean yet but as I get closer now I can give some more details of notice I'm using the side of the pastel and pushing it hard on the paper as in Palms or branches here it's okay we will have time to make them into what we want at this point so I am pushing the green that I just placed there giving them some wild shapes remember we used the darker green what we'll do after this we can go into a pastel toy box and give it shape how do we do that well we use the darker green we're going to use the lighter green touch it up a little yes it's so nice you just place it on and then you want your finger over it give it the shape that you want do not be afraid you are in control of your painting you can turn it into whatever you want here and again the more time that you have the more you can do with it if you don't want it to be monotonous hey you know what I could add some colors here if I want of course I can it is mine after all I could add some yellows if I want to why because I can it is my painting now as you can see we have this angle going in this way and it's ours what we can do again you could highlight some of them with the dark if you want a more serious painting underneath all that that gives you the look of a really nice area right here right on the beach there we go see how easy that was a nice little section on the beach makes me want to go there and stay there now all that is left as I'm looking here I have this section here I have this area here you could uh if you want to select some space here we're still with the green just fill this in right here do not leave areas open too much at the bottom there we go so all that is left for me to do at this point since my painting is completed is to sign up my painting I'll select a nice area and place my name right here there we go wasn't that simple friends I'm sure you kept up with us I'll join us next time for the next challenge see you then painting with pastels [Music] [Music] foreign [Music] funding for this program is provided in part by the Virgin Islands Council on the Arts [Music]
