Learn Moreabout PBS online sponsorshiphi there I'm Frantz Coulanges the one thing that I absolutely love about using pastel is the fact that it is a very flexible medium take for example the 2B scene that we've done so far when using pastels you can actually start with any one of the elements that you see here at the clouds Sky Ocean and the trees and still arrive at a very beautiful piece of artwork but if you're a beginner I do suggest that you start probably with the sky you blend first and then you add the clouds you leave the building and the trees last this should help you keep everything in perspective while you create your masterpiece and speaking of masterpieces would you like to know what we are creating today I can tell you it's definitely going to be a challenge so stay right where you are when we get back we'll be painting with pastels [Music] foreign [Music] Hello friends and welcome back to the show painting with pastels we promised you last week that we were gonna work on a very interesting challenge today what is it we are going to paint a sunset are you up for it let's do it we still have a box of pastel here that we can work from and we have the nice Stones here so we're gonna get the yellow orange red and white these are going to be the basis for our painting today first I am going to start with the yellow now we have this whole surface to work with and again it's the same principle we're going to choose the line where we're going to decide where the ocean and the skies are gonna meet from here that looks fine for me and again be free you can move out the paper wherever you want to so from here I'm gonna take over with the yellow how different is that from the ones that we did previously we use the blue now for sunset we're gonna use the yellow here and of course with the same touch we can do some of the ocean here because that's going to be part of our painting here now that's a simple enough starts isn't it well let's just do a little chaos in it let's make it interesting there so from here I have my yellow and again I have orange here as well let's see I'm gonna move in with some orange nearby not too much you don't want to overpower your painting of orange and again I would like to encourage each and every one of you to go out and take pictures of some of the sunsets that you've seen before no two are alike so you can have a field day and do whatever you want with your painting now I would like to go with my red tone here it's always interesting to notice that nothing is shaping up yet it's so fun like the old coloring book color by numbers looks like an abstract by Picasso but we're going to work on it from here I know that if I put my son here at my son I don't have any in the sun here then from here what I can do she's gonna be lighter here so much we can do with this but even over sunset you still have the ocean right and you still have the sky that can be seen with some colors in the background so what we're gonna do still with the same line here we're gonna gently blend this in with it again treat it like a journey there is so much you can do here foreign it's fun to start with a single step and not knowing where you are going to end up again using the side of the pastel I'm covering the larger space here and for the sky as well and the fun will be in the blending foreign keep your lines separate Between Heaven and Earth and I'd like a little piece of the beach right down below so therefore remember that we use yellow for that but that's gonna change because we do have a sunset so this is gonna be a darker tone for us now we're moving in there we go we are going to start blending and the first thing I want to touch really is the sun because I want that white to stay pure and from there I'm blending outside outward of it don't be afraid for the colors mixing together because that's what gets you your sunset you can always go back and retouch as you please we're moving in I remember catching the sunsets from racoon Hill in Saint Thomas goes right Beyond water Island and you just get a quick glimpse of it because it doesn't stay there for too long but here you can capture it on paper and it can stay with you forever so that is one of the beauties of the freedom that you have to paint and be an artist you consider yourself an artist yet but you should it's shaping up for us nice we can go back and touch again touch up the Sun so that we have that tone right there so what we can do we can touch it up I'm touching it with the pinky because that has not been in touch with colors yet and I'll tell you what we can do with the white afterwards now for the line that separates Heaven and Earth as we said earlier we just want that line to be distinct and then we're moving on because we want the reflection that is cast Over the Ocean to be manifest and again when we're blending remember the waves so much you can do here going back and forth to make sure that I have a very nice reflection if you take a step back and look I like I like it a lot okay we're moving on to this side we're blending the blue with while keeping it separate from the rest of the sunset foreign okay so now that we have this remember how we touch this up there we can go over it again because this has to set the tone for us and from there now with a sunset with the clouds we can outline some not too much now we outlining and it's taking shape for us it's coming along and again with the same pattern I can do some clouds some nice little clouds over at the Horizon there there we go now for waves that is determined by if you have high waves or low waves just highlights over the water like so now I have this space here what am I going to do with it well say we have a sunset cell for example if we have a small boat here that's very easy to do that's very simple again with the power of suggestion and the power of pastels you don't have to design everything you can just put basically if it's this way here again this is just for the outline because it's not going to be white white because of the sunset we're going to have a darker color for it but this is just to show us where we're going with this and we have the mast there we go now that I have the base of the boat I can add my colors to it and again you don't have to go by with the same colors you can choose whatever you want to let's see I'm gonna stay with the colors of the sunset basically because that will be reflected in the cell if the cell is white it's going to capture the light that is blowing from the sunset so it doesn't take too much while it does not even blend with the picture but it stays with the theme yeah so I can add a little yellow to it to show the fold and blend as you go now it's interesting to know that some artists don't blend their picture when they paint with pastel some just add the layers and they just let it be that is one technique you can again find your own you don't have to be a slave of the technique that is used by anyone you can find your own style and make it work for you so I challenge you to do that to go ahead and say well if this is Blended this way what can I do that would make it different for me what can I do to make it work for me just for me that would be my style so that when somebody sees your painting they know that it's you not made by somebody else so here we go again just suggesting here and with a sunset you have shadows of course so we need to add some Shadows with our Sunset even the clouds below the clouds you have some shadows and that's what distinguish that's what distinguishes the lines you wanna separation even if it's not clear but a suggestion and that makes a big difference for the paintings for you light and dark coming together nice and easy and of course while we add it you can add a couple of seagulls from a distance does it make a difference seagulls bats flying creatures of the night there we go so now you remember that we put a strip there as land we can blend that in like so like this is our beach here we can at the waves crashing to it so a sunset would reach us all the way up to here so we are moving along with it moving on so we have time to play around foreign we have some waves you know my Horizon looks a little Bland here what if I add what if I can add a little mountainous range here of course it will be dark you won't see too much but we have so many small islands that we can see from the distance and they look so beautiful with a sunset let's just add some right here this can be your very own Island yeah I'll name this one after me France Island that's a nice Stone to it so we're going and we blend the background just like we did and again remember you can do that with anything once you add the background you can add whatever color you want to it but since this is a sunset we gotta stay with the theme we can't really move too far from it you cannot really have daylight and the Sun is setting from this way so this is your source of light coming from this end here moving this way so we can touch it off like this and if there are people living on this island you will have your city lights on so you can basically have some dots on it for night time there okay now the reflection of the light over the water that beautiful glow that you get to see at night we can do that here you can go out and capture the waves see how the lights reflects over them that too is a beautiful thing to paint now take his second step back and look at your painting how does it look I see things that we're not fixing it I see things that I want to change or am I happy with it it is all up to you how you feel with your painting wanna blend this in a little bit and make it closer it's moving on see level my horizon line there and everything is blending now it's up to you how far you want to bring the reflection for down Sunset but remember it should not overpower your painting you could have a full Sunset painting that takes over the whole page however remember suggestions are always great with pastels power of suggestion power of pastels there we go now of course if we have the mountain there we will have reflections of that on the water as well so it doesn't have to be too much it can be that's just enough for me that's just perfect there we go I have my Shadows and it reflects right over the water what I can do also if you show the waves right over that that works for me and again I can go back over and touch over the top of the way the clouds there we go we have the clouds the top shows the light and right under you have the sections for the doctor and keep this section bright nice and bright because that's the Sun it's setting but it still has its full glow and that's what's that is going to be the center point the focal point of your painting and of course you can feel free to add whatever you want on this side but don't add too much to your painting because once you have a nice and clear painting this is something that people can look at from a distance and they can see what it is so once you cover it too much then you have too many things to look at and does not really grab your attention as it should so keep it simple keep it beautiful and you will have a marvelous painting now if you step back and you know that what did I start with I started with a blank slate now I have my Sunset I have my little boat I have my little Island and everything is just the way that I want it oh yes I need to write my name on the painting there let us see right here would be fine you have it friends the sunset did you meet the challenge sure hope that you did find us next week as we're gonna take on to another challenge a big one if you're there with me we'll make it together painting with pastels thank you for being with us see you next time [Music] thank you [Music] funding for this program is provided in part by the Virgin
