Learn Moreabout PBS online sponsorshipthis is one of the small problems that you're going to run into when using pastels your pastel sticks will get dirty hi I'm Frantz Coulanges although this may seem serious it's not actually a big problem in fact it's quite simple to fix simply take the piece of foam that comes with your pastel and you can rub off the colors that don't belong if you've lost the piece of foam not to worry there's actually a trick you can do using rice just fill a container like this one with uncooked rice place your pastel stick in it put the lid back over it and give it a couple of shakes as a result that uh now you have clean piece of pastel to work with are you ready how about we do some paintings now here we go it's time to paint with pastels [Music] foreign [Music] Hello friends and welcome to the show painting with pastels you may find yourself going out to find a subject to paint but sometimes what you need to paint may be right under your nose if you look around the house and find something that is of interest to you for example this glass of wine in the bottle of wine that is right here what if I wanted to paint that how will we do this well let's find out today I take my bottle and my glass here and I positioned them just like that now that seems simple enough how am I going to put that on the paper using my pastels let's find out as you can see today I choose the small size again we have the smaller size paper here but again that is up to you you could choose a larger size paper you have the one that you can tape on your wall if you do not have an easel just make yourself comfortable and we are going to start first of all we are going to choose our background let's see this looks fine enough I have the darker blue here and again I just want to create a background that my paintings will be in front of and of course it has to sit on something so you have to give it that Dimension there so I have this for the bottom now what we'll do we'll just blend this lightly it doesn't have to be in to any particular order because you just want a base a background for it now this is a small enough and simple enough pastel painting here that we can do with this so no need to feel intimidated by it we're going to use the same principles as before the bottle I'm just going to use the black here and if the base is right here just gotta make sure that it goes up straight up like so any curves right here like that and again we're not drawing it we just want to see where everything is going to fit and that is very important for your painting because you want to have the right dimension for everything so that looks just about right this is the first step toward Journey and of course next to it we have hourglass now the glass pose is a challenge because it's transparent but you can see the wine to it how can we capture that on paper well there are several ways to do this but I will use the gray just to have my outline here so if I'm looking at this my glasses here it's a flutes actually notice I'm doing a circle and this is something that when you ask somebody to draw a glass or they'll do the square Edge and everything falls down the way that they think it has been it's so that's the way you've been drawn since you were little and whenever somebody says well let's draw a glass and you do this well it looks fine on paper but you want the dimensions I'm looking at it from the top here so I am saying this some sort of a round opening and it goes down like so all the way down to the bottom and this side as well all the way down like this and then again the same style that I have here I have that same type of round down here there we go now since the glass is transparent I'm not really gonna have much to do as far as drawing inside it but we're gonna put the wine in it but before we do that we did we applied the black for the glass we just gonna blend that in so that we could have that smooth textured glass because the glass is actually green and we want to apply the Green in there so that it appears as if It's Made of Glass there now we're not doctoring too much inside of the glass we're just leaving it with the fuzz now when I'm blending with my glass the bottle here I know that it's rounded on the side there's a curve I'm following that curve with my fingers I'm just suggesting here just a suggestion and it goes down smooth like this all the way to the bottom we're not quite there yet but at least we can see the shape and that is what's important once you have your shape you can build on it and you can make anything happen so I have my shape here and as I mentioned the glass is green so I'm going to suggest that here like that if you look closely at this we do not see the green all the way down you see it to where the wine actually starts and I've emptied enough wine in the glass to give me up to here so this is where the green starts stops right here with this bottle so I'll leave that here like that and just touch up and again I'm pushing down hard on it because I want that smooth silky surface for the glass now if your pastel board or pastel paper that you're using if they if there's a grip to it because you know some of them have bigger grips than others the grooves in the paper that holds the pastel might want to blend that in so that it's covered in entirely and again that is your choice if you like the look of it being a little rough a little rigid by all means it is your painting do what you like now notice the light also is coming in there the same way on the surface of the glass there I also have that on the surface the lip of the bottle where it captures the light right at the right angle there it's all about the lights if you capture it right with your pastels you got it made so we want to get the light the way that it's coming in nice and smooth now I place the first layer and I blend it out with my fingers but again once you add the additional to it you can leave it like this just like this now of course the wine bottle here has a label in the neck so I'm just gonna place that right here because I want it to be as close to reality as possible I have the label right here and again it is your label you can place whatever name you want on it it is your wine now the wine starts here for me I'm just suggesting because I don't want whatever color you chose for your wine I don't want it to overpower the background that I did because this cannot be dark but again it's a nice touch to it now for my glass I place some inside the glass as well and it's almost to the rim there now the same way that I have the edge of the glass there the wine inside the glass is going to take the same shape so I will have that just like so and it's gonna go down all the way to the bottom of the wine I'm using purple because that's what I have here as my primary color depth with everything so I will add my dark to it to make that just the way that it looks there and there I am taking the black over it and without overpowering it too much down remember it still has to look like it's a glass because you even though you're putting something inside it the reflection still has to dictate that it is a glass container there we go now with my gray again just gonna suggest the reflection on this side because whatever is here at the bottom of the table is going to be reflecting on the glass so I have that here the reflection is what makes it look like it's transparent there and now for my wine label let's see I place that right here but you create your own label name it after yourself why not show wine let's see yes I have my own my very own wine the label goes all the way down here and again remember the reflection of whatever is next to your glass it's gonna be reflected in it I want my label to be colorful I want it to bring out the painting so instead of the blend one that I have here there we go maybe that'll be my next job I'm going to be designing wine label huh and remember the reflection inside your glass very important because once it's flat then you no longer have a three-dimensional picture you'll have a flat one and that my friends is not a good thing okay now we'll just writing the name of the wine on the label and don't ask me which one it is because I can't tell you there now again the important thing is that once you're painting you can let your imagination go wild because you are in control now if I have this bottle of wine here and the glass there and if it looks bland enough to me and I want to add something to it to make it stand out well you know since wine is made up with let's say grapes if I want to put a couple of grapes here yeah we still have the time for that if we move quick enough same principles we're doing the dark background I want you to be free just relax yourself see with this I'm just giving it the shape of The Grapes there are they going to be seeded grapes seedless grapes we'll see again without giving it shape I'm still adding just the purple to the top part there you are in control you can do whatever you want to here after adding this here could have a little green I'm still living the dark colors the black at the bottom because once I mix it up I want it all to come together for me with shadows and Light adding a little pink to the top of the purple and once you blend it all in it will come together for you as what you want it to be so don't be afraid if at first you feel that it doesn't look like what you want it to be and my light source of Lights coming from up here down so this is where I will have the highlights on the grapes there again some artists don't blend it in they just let it sit again it is your painting and the choice is yours entirely you can do what you want to do we're blending our grapes not too much just giving it the soft touch there soft smooth skin who is suggesting we highlighting remember each one of them should conserve their individuality they should each be done separately I'm just doing small circular motion because I want them to look round keeping the Shadows at the bottom and the light on top now once you've done that you have enough here and of course your shadows must be at the bottom so let's say if my light's coming here then I left my Shadows down here and that makes it interesting because you can tell that it is sitting on something but be careful because when you have your shadows you need to distinguish where your object sets where the shadow starts because otherwise you'll just have no lines in between now I still want to touch it up I'm highlighting just the section where the light is touching there because I will have to put my lights on them but I'm not just going from the light to the dark I'm adding some intermediary colors in between and just like that each one of them is reflecting the lights for me and it will be a beautiful thing to look at once you have the overall figures and of course say if I want to put one grape leaf right here yeah we still have time for that why not just remember it's a journey it's your journey you decide where you want to go of this and where it will take you you are in control there we go a little light here a little Shadow here and we have it there we go now one final touch up the surface of the wine as we can see is reflecting some lights here great and this is it friends now we will just write a name there it's complete are you happy with yours I am happy with mine join us next time as we take on a new challenge be sure to be there see you next time friends [Music] foreign [Music] funding for this program is provided in part by the Virgin Islands Council on the Arts foreign
