My name is Manal Jarrar and I wa born in Akka, Acre, Israel.
I am Palestinian from Israel.
I think for me being Palestinian from Israel, you learn how to accept diversit So you carry that with you.
If you dont mind, Ill take my toys.
You get to a deep level of understanding more people, of peace with people.
I want people to come here and to feel comfortable.
So, eat it, and if you dont like anything, be quiet.
It doesn't really matter, like, where you came from.
Theres a lot of Jewish people who come in here, and they feel the same way, “Oh okay, hi Manal!
” They give me a hug because they feel comfortable.

I opened back in 2009 and Ive been here for 15 years.
Its a family business.
My husband, Saeb, he helps me on the weekend and sometimes during the week.
We fight sometimes, like a free show.
It's okay.
Hello?
It took me, like, three years to open my cafe.
Kids at school, they would eat my childrens lun and then theyd want to be frien “Oh your mom, shes a good cook, ” or something like that.
So I started doing, like, catering for families.
It encouraged me, you know, and then it just, like, came to me, “Okay, you know what?
I'm going to go ahead and open my own restaurant.
” And it was just like that, like, a pure mind, with no ideas at all.
You go through up and downs.
You go through, like, good days, bad days, you know?
The meaning of it, Arabesque, is Arabic.
Its like a French word for Arabic.
And the reason I chose it was because I was a ballet dancer and a ballet teacher.
And “Arabesque ” is the most important movement in a dan Its the arches in her back, and all the graceful ways of stretching.
Actually, I built it not mostly as a business.
I built it and Im still here because of the passion of cookin It's rewarding to know that people love your food.
It's fun.
It's a success that you are doing something and people like it, and for me, for me, I'm not comparing myself with other peoples success.
It's just the competition between me and myself.
And also, I don't want people to treat me, because Im Palestinian to treat me, “Oh, I feel bad abo You know what?
No!
Treat me as a successful business woman.
Look at me.
Look at me a different way.
Were going to have a sampler of a little bit of everything.
Were going to have a chicken schwarma.
If you dont eat chicken, youre going to start eating it Were very friendly, Palestinians, Israelis were very friendly, too friendly.
We are like an octopus.
Were like all over each other.
Maybe this restaurant, why I built it up, the reason was to express myself and to bring people together.
Because like, you know, the best businesses in the world as this business, you know, it can start with a friendship.
