Learn Moreabout PBS online sponsorshipwhile tensions in the Middle East continued to rise over the weekend impacting a narrowing presidential race here in the US Hezbollah has claimed credit for a drone attack early this morning that wounded two Israeli Soldiers the attack was in response to Israel's killing of a Hamas leader in Iran and a Hezbollah leader in Lebanon recently it's led to Growing concern that the conflict could turn into an allout War and the US has moved more military presence into Israel in recent days meanwhile Israel continu its attacks on Hamas in Gaza over the weekend killing several civilians in those strikes the war continues to be a major political issue here in the states with continued calls from Pro Palestinian supporters to end the strikes in Gaza that have claimed the lives of nearly 40,000 people vice president Kamala Harris addressed their concerns a few weeks ago during her meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu where she told him she wouldn't be silent about the suffering in Gaza and now with just hours to go before she selects a nominee for vice president some Pro Palestinian supporters are critical of one of her likely top choices Pennsylvania Democratic governor Josh Shapiro who's been supportive of Israel senior political correspondent David Cruz takes a closer look at the impact that this war and Harris's position on it could have on the upcoming [Music] election for the photo op after the meeting between vice president Kamala Harris and Israeli Prime Minister net Netanyahu the US and Israeli Flags served as the backdrop a symbol of the lasting partnership between the two countries for the vice president's remarks afterwards it was us Flags only I've said it many times but it Bears repeating Israel has a right to defend itself and how it does so matters like every president and presidential hopeful before her Harris the presumptive Democratic nominee has had to walk a rhetorical tight RPP on the latest Middle East War where the atrocities mount in the neighborhood SL battlefields and the political pressures here in an election year Mount what has happened in Gaza over the past N9 months is devastating the images of dead children and desperate hungry people fleeing for safety sometimes displaced for the second third or fourth time we cannot look away in the face of these tragedies we cannot allow ourselves to become numb to the suffering and I will not be silent palestinian-american activist Sami Shaban applauded Joe Biden's exit from the race and says he welcomes what he's hearing from Harris it's even an acknowledgement of the current facts that she said that you know some of these Palestinians have been displaced to three or even four times that's my family she's a different generation of democrat Biden represents a different a different Age and and vice president Harris seems like she's actually taking on the mantle understanding more of what the the the pulse is of the democratic party right now Amad aad is an uncommitted delegate from the justice for Palestine permanent ceasefire now delegation while he too welcomed Biden's exit from the race he says he needs to hear more from Harris before he commits to her while Harris has called for a ceasefire as well as acknowledged the immense scale of suffering in Gaza actions are louder than words uh we need policy changes not empty words um so Harris now has the opportunity um and chance to shift from Biden uh to Garner Firm support uh of the democratic base wad had until the end of business today to make a decision meanwhile Palestinian Americans like attorney yusra Matari battle feelings of guilt knowing that she can be here for her children while other mothers simply canot my son is homesick so I get to be home with him to comfort him and how is a child who who might not have a single surviving relative going to receive any comfort when they're lying in hospital bed and and just completely covered in cast because there's burns on 80% of their body acknowledgement by Harris of conditions on the ground is one thing action that would change those conditions is quite another it takes a president and a Congress and some consensus on how to stop the fighting uncommitted delegates say they want to meet with Harris during the convention to hear her call for a permanent ceasefire and an arms embargo hoping to get her on the record at least before they can believe let alone mobilize on her behalf I'm David Cruz NJ Spotlight NJ Spotlight News
