Paper Foxes: Get to Know the Band Behind a Unique Brand of Dark Dance Rock.
Phoenix-based band Paper Foxes is a paradox. Its lyrics can often be dark, but its overall sound is polished and poppy. The five piece’s danceable, disco-infused tunes are inspired by new wave bands like Talking Heads and Joy Division, but they have a signature sound all their own.

You don't know if you're happy, or you're sad, or you're excited or you're, I don't know, sad or whatever.
But that for me is, I love doing that every time, because it's the only, this is the only thing that I can find that feeling with.
- Yeah, I would second that too because I don't know, feeding off the energy of a room, the energy of an audience that's really enjoying what you're doing is an incredible feeling.
It makes performing almost effortless, at least for me.
And when you're done with a show like that, you just feel, it's an incredible natural high, really, is what it is.
- So with me, my favorite thing about performing is, I pretty much, in my alone time and at my house, I am performing all the time anyways.
I'm always walking around singing, making up a couple notes on the keyboard, or anything.
And when I get to do that in front of the audience I get to kind of show out, wave my arms around.
And again, the energy that they get when they see me doing that, they take it and give it back to me.
And so we just keep going back and forth and that really does kind of get you all going, get you ready to keep blasting through those songs and everything like that.
So, that's my favorite part of performing.
- Yeah, I think in the later years of my performing, my favorite thing about it is fine tuning everything.
So, I used to play very technical stuff, and I was very focused on like, I was in my head, and getting the enjoyment out of it, out of the experience, regardless of what happens.
So like getting out of my head and constantly having to be present, that is my favorite thing about music is, it forces a presence that very few actions and things that I do in my life force me to do.
And it's like, if I'm not present, then the audience can feel it and there's this backwards idea with musicians where they think, "Oh, the crowd was great," or, "The crowd sucked tonight," but the crowd feeds off of the performer.
If you're not bringing the energy, they're not gonna give it back 'cause they're just a mirror reflecting of your performance.
So yeah, I love going on stage and bring a lot of energy and being hot.
I love going on stage and just like, all eyes on me.
I love the attention.
Thank you.
(chuckles) And I love it so very much so.
That's like another part of the growing as a musician.
I was so afraid of being seen and being acknowledged for what I wanted to be acknowledged for, which was being a really good musician, and being attractive.
I thought I was very ugly most of my life.
And so, it's cool to really just own everything now.
So, yeah.
