THE KENTUCKY RIVER IS BROKEN INTO 14 SECTIONS, SO WHEN YOU GET TO A LOCK AND A DAM, YOU HAVE TO TAKE OUT OF THE RIVER AND CLIMB OVER THE DAM.
THE LOCKS AND DAMS WERE CONSTRUCTED BETWEEN 1836 AND 1917.
AND THEY USED TO CARRY A LOT OF COMMERCIAL TRAFFIC.
BUT TODAY, ONLY FOUR OF THEM STILL HAVE COMMERCIAL TRAFFIC.
SO NOW IT IS JUST SMALL CRAFT THAT WE HAVE TO CARRY OVER THE LOCKS AND DAMS.

REMEMBER EATING BREAKFAST DOWN THERE IN THE EARLY MORNING FOG AND THE IN THE EVENING, WE WOULD GATHER AROUND THE BLAZING AND REMEMBER BUILDING SAND CASTLES COMPLETE ARE BRIDGE AND THE WAKE OF THE BIG PASSING BOATS.

WE'RE GOING TO CATCH ONE THE KENTUCKY AMERICAN WATER TEAM WHICH IS MAKING A PORTAGE NOW AROUND LOCK NUMBER TEN AT FORT BOONESBOROUGH STATE PARK.
>> YOU KNOW, I GUESS WE'VE BEEN KEEPING UP THE PACE ABOUT UP FOR-PLUS MILES AN HOUR.
THIS RIVER IS NOT A FAST BODY OF WATER, ESPECIALLY THIS TIME OF THE YEAR.
THIS ONE HERE FROM BOONESBORO, AND I HAVE BEEN IN OTHER ONES, JUST REAL MY NOT TO THIS EXTREME ANYWAYS.

IT IS A NEW BOAT THAT KENTUCKY AMERICAN WATER PUT OUT FOR US TO DO THIS RACE.
THIS RACE IS ONE THAT'S BUILT FOR THE ENTIRE KENTUCKY, BUT AT THE SAME TIME, HAVE THE ADVENTURES PART OF IT AND PORTAGE IN THE LOCKS IS DEFINITELY ONE OF THEM.
YOU KNOW, THIS RACE IS ONE THAT IS -- WE PUT THIS TOGETHER PRETTY MUCH SO EVERYBODY CAN DO IT.
IT WAS FAIRLY CHEAP PRICE, I GUESS.

THE LIST THAT THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT HOLDS THAT ARE NOT MEETING THEIR STANDARDS, WHATEVER THE DIVISION OF WATER SAID THAT THEY ARE FOR.

IN FAYETTE, THERE IS REALLY ONLC ACCESS.

PEOPLE DON'T EVEN REALIZE THE RIVER IS NEAR THEM.

>> YOU GET A LITTLE MORE MANEUVER ABILITY.
>> THIS IS BOONES CREEK.
>> BOONES CREEK IS MUCH LIKE THE KENTUCKY RIVER AND IT HAS ITS OWN SET OF PALISADES.
WE CAN SEE SOME COMING UP AND IT IS A GORGEOUS PLACE.
THE ONLY CREEK IN FAYETTE COUNTY THAT IS NOT ON THE LIST OF EPA STREAMS THAT ARE POLLUTED.
AND SO IT IS A REALLY A GEM FOR THIS AREA.

>> SO AMY, HOW ARE WE DOING ON WATER QUALITY IN THE STATE OF KENTUCKY?
>> WELL, YOU KNOW, THERE IS A LOT.
THE GREEN RIVER IN WESTERN KENTUCKY IS THE GREENEST RIVER AND ALL OF THE OTHERS ARE FOR VARIOUS THINGS.
>> SO AMY, TELL ME WHY THE KENTUCKY RIVER IS THE COLOR THAT IT IS.
>> WELL, RIGHT NOW, IT IS ONE OF THE MOST BEAUTIFUL COLORS OF THE KENTUCKY RIVERS.
IT FEELS CLEAN AND CRISP AND SOMETIMES AFTER THE RAIN, YOU SEE PROBLEMS, IT BECOMES VERY BROWN.
AND THAT'S ALL THE SILT COMING OFF OF THE CONSTRUCTION SITES OR AN AREA IN YOUR YARD OR DOWN THE STREET THAT DOESN'T HAVE ANY -- IT IS JUST A DIRT LOT AND THAT'S CAUCASUSS A LOT OF POLLUTION.
THE SEDIMENT THAT COMES IN AND CAN MAKE THE ENKENTUCKY RIVER VERY BROWN.
THIS IS A BEAUTIFUL COLOR.
>> THE KENTUCKY RIVER HAS A WATERSHED THAT ENCOMPASSES ALMOST 7,000 MILES.
>> THAT IS AMAZING.
>> THAT'S A LOT OF WATER.
>> YES.
ABSOLUTELY.
>> AND IT ALL HEADS 255 MILES DOWNSTREAM TO THE OHIO RIVER.
700,000 PEOPLE GET THEIR DRINKING WATER OUT OF THE KENTUCKY RIVER.

HE UNDERSTOOD FROM THE FRENCH SOLDIERS COMING BACK FROM THE REVOLUTIONARY WAR THAT THERE WAS NO WINERIES HERE.
THERE WAS NO WINE TO BE PURCHASED.
THEY COULDN'T UNDERSTAND THAT.
SO ED TO START AN INDUSTRY.

MOST PEOPLE DON'T, I GUESS, EQUATE KENTUCKY WITH BEING THE START OF THE WINE INDUSTRY BUT THIS, IN FACT, IS WHERE THE WHOLE THING STARTED RIGHT HERE IN JESSAMINE COUNTY, KENTUCKY.
>> THE KENTUCKY RIVER IS RIGHT BEHIND US, LITERALLY OVER HERE.
DROPPING DOWN SEVERAL FEET.
WHAT ROLE DID IT PLAY HERE THE FIRST VINEYARD?
>> I THINK IT WAS REALLY IMPORTANT BECAUSE GO UP THE OHIO AND MISSISSIPPI RIVER CAME DOWN THE KENTUCKY RIVER, AND I WONDERED WHY IN THE WORLD THEY STAYED HERE INSTEAD OF -- WELL THEN I FOUND OUT THAT THERE WAS A LARGE SHIPPING PORT CALLED QUANTICO ACROSS THE RIVER THERE.
AND IT WAS PERFECT HERE BECAUSE THE RIVER THAT CREATED A MICROCLIMATE BUT MORE IMPORTANTLY A WAY TO PUT WINE ON THE FLAT BOAT, TAKE IT TO NEW ORLEANS, AND THEN FROM NEW ORLEANS, YOU COULD TAKE IT IN WHERE IN THE WORLD.

THIS IT IS FIRST VINEYARD IN THE UNITED STATES AS WELL AS KENTUCKY.
SO THAT SEEMED TO BODE WELL FOR KENTUCKY HAVING A SOLID FOUNDATION FOR PRODUCING GRAPES AND WINES BUT IT IS NOT REALLY KNOWN FOR WINE THAT MUCH.
SO WHAT HAPPENED?
>> WELL, ONE OF THE THINGS WAS THAT THE CIVIL WAR.
A LOT OF THE FARMERS WERE INJURED, KILLED.
IN AGRICULTURE, IT JUST TOOK A REAL DIP.
THE OTHER THING WAS PROHIBITION IN THE 1920s.
SO YOU HAVE AN INDUSTRY THAT FOR ALL PRACTICAL PURPOSES ALMOST DIED TWICE.
AFTER PROHIBITION, WE HAD ANTIQUATED LAWS ON THE BOOK AND IT WAS NOT UNTIL ABOUT 15 OR 18 YEARS AGO THAT YOU COULD HAVE A SMALL FARM TO DO IT SO I GUESS THE EVENTS, THE BED AND BREAKFAST AND PEOPLE THAT COME AND MAYBE THEY ARE DOING THE WINE TRAIL.
THEY ARE STAYING HERE AND GOING AROUND THE COMMUNITY.
SOME PEOPLE ARE DOING THE BOURBON TRAIL.
AND -- >> IF YOU'RE DRINKING WINE, AND BOURBON, IT IS PROBABLY BEST TO GO AHEAD AND SLEEP.
