WE'RE IN THE PASEO ARTS DISTRICT IN OKLAHOMA CITY.
THIS TWO BLOCK PARCEL OF SPANISH REVIVAL ARCHITECTURE WAS BUILT BY G.A.
NICHOLS IN THE 1920'S.
AS THE FIRST SHOPPING DISTRICT NORTH OF DOWNTOWN.
TODAY IT'S HOME TO ABOUT 20 ART GALLERIES, RESTAURANTS, BUSINESSES AND BOUTIQUES AS WELL AS 80 ARTISTS, ALL WITHIN WALKING DISTANCE OF EACHOTHER.
(MUSIC SWELLS) THE TRANSFORMATION TO AN ARTS DISTRICT WAS THE VISION OF THE LATE JOHN BELT.
OVER THE YEARS WE'VE SHOWN A SPOTLIGHT ON THE DISTRICT AND ITS ARTISTS.
THIS EPISODE OF GALLERY AMERICA TAKES A LOOK BACK AT SOME OF THOSE ARTISTS THAT HAVE A PRESENCE IN THE PASEO TO THIS VERY DAY.

I WENT TO SCHOOL ALL TOKYO.

HE WAS ON CIVIL SERVICE.
THAT'S WHY I CAME HERE, IN OKLAHOMA.
>> HER WORK IS A MERGING OF EAST AND WEST.
MICHI SUSAN IS A JAPANESE-AMERICAN ARTIST OF INTERNATIONAL MERIT.
FORMALLY TRAINED AT JAPAN'S WOMEN'S UNIVERSITY AND HOSAI UNIVERSITY >> MY GENERATION, AT THAT TIME , EVERYBODY START FROM THE VERY BASIC.
STUDY OF ART.
WHICH IS DRAWINGS AND ALSO IF YOU PAINT OIL PAINT.
I USE A LOT, ACRYLIC NOW DAYS, BUT THOSE DAYS ARE THE OIL PAINTING YOU KNOW AND THAT'S HOW ALL ARTISTS STARTED.
I DO MORE LIKE A MIXED MEDIA ARTISTS AND MIXED MEDIA ARTIST IS ALL MIXED MEDIA.
PAPER AND FABRIC AND ANYTHING YOU CAN PUT IT IN A CANVAS, THAT'S A MIX.
THESE WORKS ARE CALLED "POEMS", A COLLAGE OF BLACK, WHITE, RED AND WORDS... MOSTLY IN JAPANESE, OCCASIONALLY IN ENGLISH.
>> I HAVE A POEM WRITTEN BUT PEOPLE SAY WHAT DO YOU SAY IN THOSE POEMS, YOU KNOW.
I SAY, WELL, IT DEPENDS ON WHAT YOU THINK, YOU CAN MAKE UP YOUR OWN POEMS.

>> THE SUNSETS...IT'S THE MOST BEAUTIFUL THING OF OKLAHOMA.
YOU KNOW, REALLY I JUST ENJOY SO MUCH.
AND IT'S COME UP IN MY PAINTINGS.

WHICH I LOVE THAT WAY.

>> THE BLENDING OF CULTURES HAPPENED WITHOUT FANFARE.
IT HAPPENED INSIDE MICHI WITH EVERY NEW EXPERIENCE, EVERY NEW BEAUTY THAT CAUGHT HER EYE DURING HER LIFE IN OKLAHOMA.
EVEN IN TRAGEDY THIS HAPPY SOUL FINDS LOVELINESS.
>> WE WERE WATCHING, MY HUSBAND WAS WATCHING THE TV NEWS FOR TORNADOES.
(TV CHATTER) THIS TIME THIS TORNADO COMING THIS WAY!
SO WE HIT THE CLOSET, BECAUSE AT THAT TIME WE DON'T HAVE ANY SHELTER.
(SAD MUSIC SWELLS) EVERYTHING'S JUST GONE AND CHUCK AND I ARE STANDING IN JUST FLAT AREA.
STANDING THERE, AND I SAW IT.
I NEVER DID CRY.
I SAW SO MANY PEOPLE HAD AN ACCIDENT, SOME LIKE THAT, THEY CRY.
BUT NOT FOR ME.
NOT FOR US.
IT'S NATURE THAT TOOK EVERYTHING AWAY.
SO WHAT?
*LAUGHS* AFTER EVERYTHING GONE, JUST A LITTLE WILD FLOWERS COME UP.
SO BOY, THIS IS THE MOST BEAUTIFUL THING I SAW IN MY LIFE.
SO I STARTED PAINT WILD FLOWERS.
AND WILD FLOWERS AND BIRD.
BIRDS ARE STILL SINGING!

IT'S JUST AMAZING.
>> FOR 30 YEARS THIS JAPANESE- AMERICAN ARTIST FORMALLY TRAINED IN THE ORIENT HAS PUT THE HER TALENT TO WORK IN OKLAHOMA AND IN THE END BOTH OF HER HOMES HAVE BEEN AN INSPIRATION FOR THE EXPRESSION OF HER BRIGHT, POETIC, AND HAPPY HEART.

>> BUT, BEHIND THE SCENES OF ALL OF THESE MINI-PAPER THEATRES >> AND THEN THEY COULD BE CLOWNS AND FIX CARS AND FIX PLANES AND HELP CHILDREN AND THEY MAKE THE WHOLE WORLD HAPPY.
>> THERE ARE REAL CHILDREN WHO ARE MAKING THEMSELVES UP.

IT'S ABOUT WHAT HAPPENS INSIDE OF SOME AMAZING YOUNG PEOPLE AND WHAT ADULTS CAN DO TO HELP THEM MAXIMIZE THEIR POTENTIAL AND TO BECOME WHO THEY'RE MEANT TO BE.
(OLD FASHIONED SLOWER SONG) >> THIS PIECE IS WORKING BECAUSE I BELIEVE THERE ARE SO MANY LAYERS.
THERE ARE CHILDREN WHO ARE WATCHING OTHER CHILDREN DANCING AND THEY'RE DANCING WITH EGGS, BUT DANCING SO CAREFULLY, IN A NURTURING WAY, (MUSIC) EVEN TAKING RISKS HERE WITH THE EGGS AND THERE ARE ADULTS WHO ARE LISTENING TO THE SONGS, OF AL BOLEY, WHO WAS A CROONER FROM THE 1930'S.
(MUSIC) I BELIEVE THEY'RE EXPERIENCING ALL THE LAYERS OF A NURTURING ASPECT OF US ALL.

THE COMIC BOOKS WERE ALWAYS, KIND OF A PART OF THAT BECAUSE IT CREATED A MORE VISUAL EXPERIENCE THAT COMPLEMENTED THE SCIENCE FICTION AND FANTASY.
AND THERE WAS SOMETHING ABOUT TRYING TO RELATE THIS SCIENCE FICTION TO MY REALITY GROWING UP IN A SMALL TOWN IN OKLAHOMA.
(DRIVING ELECTRONIC MUSIC) THE BIZARNESS OR THE WHIMSICAL AND THE DISTURBING IMAGES, IT'S ALL PART OF WANTING OUT OF THERE.

THE THEME WAS, BASICALLY ABOUT MAN TRYING TO GET BACK TO THE TRUE STATE OF NATURE.
WHERE GOOD AND EVIL REALLY DON'T EXIST BECAUSE ALL HE HAS IS HIS OWN INDEPENDENCE TO CONTEMPLATE.
IT KIND OF GOES WITH THE WHOLE PRIMAL, SOCIAL DICHOTOMY OF LIFE.
(MUSIC UP FULL AND THEN FADES OUT) THE UMBRELLA IS AN OBVIOUS REFERENCE TO BEING SHELTERED OR NURTURED, OR PROTECTED, I GUESS.
THE WOLF FOR ME IS THE EMOTIONS THAT WE FEEL AND EXPERIENCE.
IT, ULTIMATELY I THINK, SUBMITS TO EVERYONE'S OWN, PERSONAL INTERPRETATION.
THERE'S SOMETHING I THINK THAT'S FUNDAMENTALLY BEAUTIFUL AND MAGNIFICENT ABOUT THE DARKNESS IN LIFE BECAUSE WITHOUT SADNESS YOU CAN'T HAVE HAPPINESS AND ALL THAT SORT OF THING.

LIVING STATUES HAVE BEEN AROUND FOR THOUSANDS OF YEARS.
THE WHOLE IDEA OF SOMEBODY PAINTED UP, STANDING STILL, LOOKING LIKE THEY'RE A STATUE, BUT REALLY A REAL PERSON.
THERE'S SO MANY THINGS ABOUT IT THAT I FIND ATTRACTIVE.
THERE'S A GRACE TO IT THAT I REALLY ADMIRE.
I THINK, WHEN IT'S DONE RIGHT YOU CAN HAVE ALL KINDS OF ELEMENTS.
IT'S ELEGANT AND YOU CAN STILL DO COMEDY THROUGH IT.
(KISS AND LAUGHTER) AND THERE'S KIND OF A HAUNTED HOUSE KIND OF SCARINESS TO IT WHEN YOU STARTLE PEOPLE.
IT'S A FULL DYNAMIC WHICH IS WHAT I LIKE.
(CROWD LAUGHING) WHAT I TRY TO DO IS JUT TAKE THOSE MOMENTS TO HOLD STILL UNTIL THERE'S AN OPPORTUNITY TO MOVE.
AND LOOK FOR THAT MOMENT WHEN THAT MOVING IS GOING TO HAVE ITS BIGGEST IMPACT.

THEY SEE ME AND YOU CAN TELL THEY'RE KIND OF STUNNED AND THEN THEY JUST KIND OF PLAY IT OFF.
(CROWD CHATTER) >>SORRY.
>>SOME DON'T EVEN NOTICE, AND FOR PEOPLE WHO DO KNOW WHAT'S GOING ON, THAT'S ENTERTAINING, JUST TO SEE PEOPLE WALK BY WHO NEVER REALIZED I WAS A REAL PERSON.
OTHER PEOPLE ARE ENTERTAINED BY THAT.
SO, THERE'S SO MANY DIFFERENT WAYS YOU CAN INTERACT AND ENTERTAIN PEOPLE.
THAT MAKES IT A LOT OF FUN.
(LIGHT MUSIC - FOOT STOMP-LAUGHTER) >>IT'S CRAZY!
HE'S REAL!!

OR WHATEVER COSTUME IT IS THAT PEOPLE FEEL THEY NEED FOR THEIR EVENT.
ONE OF THE FUN THINGS ABOUT IT IS... I TRY TO BE AS VERSATILE A PERFORMER AS POSSIBLE.
(LAUGHTER) YOU HAVE TO KNOW YOUR AUDIENCE.
IF YOU'RE WORKING WITH KIDS, TREAT THEM LIKE KIDS.
IF I'M WORKING AT A CLUB OR AT AN ALL ADULT EVENT, I'M WITH AN ADULT AUDIENCE AND THERE ARE CERTAIN THINGS I DO THAT WORK BETTER WITH AN ADULT AUDIENCE.

AND THAT'S WHAT I TRY TO CONCENTRATE ON IS NOT SO MUCH PERFORMING THE SAME WAY EVERY TIME, BUT SEEKING AN INDIVIDUAL AND SEE WHAT THEY REACT TO.
AND HAVING THAT INTERACTION.
IT'S A VERY PERSONAL MOMENT.
(MUSIC) I DON'T KNOW HOW LONG I'LL BE A STREET PERFORMER.
IN MY HEART, IT SAYS ALWAYS.
AS LONG AS I CAN PERFORM AND HAVE THAT FUN I'M GOING TO DO IT.
>> HE MAKES ME LAUGH REALLY HARD AND... AND HE'S... AND THE CLOWNS ARE REALLY FUNNY.
>> EVEN IF I HAD A REGULAR 9 TO 5 JOB I WOULD STILL HAVE TO DO THIS.

I TRY TO LOOK AT THINGS WITH NEW EYES AS MUCH AS I CAN AND JUST HAVE FUN WITH OTHER PEOPLE.

>> I IMAGINE I'M GOING TO BE AN ARTIST AND HAVE FUN AND DO ALL THOSE THINGS AS LONG AS I POSSIBLY CAN.
