Massive passport application backlog upends travel plans

If you apply for a passport now, you’ll probably get it by Thanksgiving.

Anyone looking to travel abroad should check the expiration date on their passport first. There’s a nationwide backlog in processing passport applications and renewals due to a staffing shortage at the U.S. Department of State — and a massive rush of people looking to make up for a year of lost travel. A process that used to take weeks could now take several months.
