From the distance you hear the voice of our chanter as she chants to the goddess Laka, the goddess of the hula.

As you know, I'm Martha Carroll and I'm subbing for host Bob Barker who's on the sick list today.

We're really delighted to have you here on Pau Hana Years.

And before continuing, I wonder if you could introduce us to the marvelous members of your cast.

PK: Yes, Martha.

I would like to introduce first, our not only a beautiful singer, musician, chanter at this time, lovely Leilani Sharpe Mendez, our wonderful chanter and hula instructor.

And on the bass, that's our lovely, Violet Pahu Lilikoʻi.

And on the drums in the back of us, that's Pilialoha and Kapua Wailana.

And I at this time I introduced to you our lovely hula dancers, the Hauʻoli hula dancers.

This is our Hauʻoli group.

MC: Well you started off doing the chants of old Hawaiʻi, what are you going to be doing next on the program?

PK: Well for our next number in our program, our lovely dancers dancers are going to get in the ti leaf hula skirt.

MC: Well, we'll be looking forward to it.

PK: We introduced to you at this time our lovely hula dancers, dancing using all the different percussion implements: the hollowed out gourd or the ipu, the split bamboos or the puʻilis, the rattling feather gourd or the ʻuliʻuli.

They do a medley of songs "Nā Aliʻi", "Hilo E" and "Kō Maʻi Hōʻeuʻeu."

MC: You know it's really been a pleasure watching the girls perform today.

Oh many.

It's, how many of the dancers do you have and where are you performing now?

PK: Well, I have I'm at the Ilikai Hotel every evening, Wednesday to Mondays and we do to torch lighting there, Violet Pahu Lilikoʻi and Leilani Sharpe Mendez.

We entertain all the malahinis, whoever coming to our beautiful Ilikai Hotel for torch lighting.

And besides that we have a hula studio.

MC: Well how many dancers do you have working with you professionally?

PK: Professionally we have, I have about eight dancers.

MC: Eight dancers?

PK: Yes.

MC: And what about in terms of your hula studio?

PK: In our hula studio we have about 150.

We just had, we just open two years now.

MC: Two years?

PK: Yes.

I've had a hula group for over 17 years where I entertained at all the hotels, Princess Kaiulani for Sheraton and Hilton, and at the Ilikai.

Those were my old dancers and then I had an offer to open a hula studio.

We located at 711 Keaumoku Street in the Hawaiʻi Manufacturing Center.

And this is our lovely dancers.

MC: I understand that even though, you know, your studio has been only open for two years, you've really done quite a job.

You recently won quite a few divisions in the Merrie Monarch.

PK: Yes.

MC: Competition in Hilo?

PK: Yes, that's how we came out with the perpetual trophy, the three category we entered, and overall.

Came home with five trophies and took it from Hilo.

MC: Well, I can understand why after seeing the girls dance.

We really, you know,   enjoyed having you on the show.

And I wonder if you could tell us a little bit about the next number that's coming up PK: Well, the next number we going to introduce, to me, she's one of Hawaiʻi's great woman bass player, MC: Stand up bass, huh?

PK: Yes, and that's Violet Pahu Liliko'i.

She's going to sing and play her bass.
