Kase Johnstun from Utah Humanities is here to tell us about a new box with Utah's Untold Stories.
Hi Kase, thanks for being here.
- Yeah, thanks for having me.
- So this time, what you're doing with the Book Club In A Box is around one book by a local poet and then films by high school students.
- Yeah, so it's a mix of kind of bringing in a book that is on theme with these films that the local high school students have put together.
And this Book in a Box really kind of looks at the intersection of immigration and religion in Utah and what kind of cultural communities the immigrants find here and how they bring such positive things to Utah.
- Sounds great.
It's kind of about finding sense of place too.
And you brought the book.
- I did - The collection of poems and tell us a bit about the author.
- Yeah, this is Willy Palomo's book, "Wake the Others," and I'm gonna read just from the back really quickly, but it's a half memoir, half biography and it wrestles with the legacy of Salvador and Civil War.
And it talks really about his mom, her fleeing the Salvador and Civil War coming to Utah, finding family and religion and community here.
- Okay, and then the films by local high school students, there are more Pacific Islanders.
So what are some of those about?
- Yeah, the films for the high school students were really, really great.
I encourage everyone to get online and watch them.
One of the films really talks about how they've found this community in rugby and how they've created rugby culture within their schools because they immigrated here and brought this kind of culture of rugby and family to Utah.
That's just one of the films.
- Okay and lots.
So thank you for partnering with PBS Utah to do it.
Thank you.
- Absolutely, thank you.
