Whoa So put on your dancing shoes Welcome back to the Rhythm Lounge.
I'm Manny, and today we have Brent Murphy of Portamento with us.
Brent, thank you so much for being here.
How are you doing?
I'm doing good.
How are you, man?
I'm doing great.
So first off, how did you get the name Portamento?
And, what inspired you to create that?
Well, I've been kind of playing music my entire life, and I've grown up around, like, keyboards, synthesizers, all that kind of stuff.
And, there's always been a definition, you know that says portamento on there.
And I've always been like, oh, what does that even mean?
You know, and I, I'm a big, like, indie fan.
So there's a band called The Drums.
They also have an album called that.
Yeah.
So I was like, all right, I got to know.
So I looked it up and it's a musical term and it means from one smooth note to another.
And at the time I was playin a lot of surf, like pop music.
Right.
And I was like, well I think that just kind of best fits the description in general.
So I just I just went with it, you know.
Gotcha.
So who would you sa are some of your influences from mainstream, you know, music that, you know, people know?
Oh, man.
Okay.
Mainstream music, there's a lo I, I listen to the band Camino.
They're like, really big right now.
I just got don seeing, this band Little Image and they're like, song is on Hulu, like 24, seven on ads and stuff like that.
But I'm, I'm like a really I'm a band oriented kind of kind of guy, obviously.
So I don't really listen to a lot of solo artists and stuff like that, but, just a big fan of all music in general.
That's awesome.
Yeah, it really makes me thin how beneficial it is to kind of be in the positions of, you know, you have to do 3 or 4 different things, like you're, you know, playing instrument, but you're also on vocals, but you're also, you know, producing the music, but you're also setting up as well.
And so, you know, when I was watching you rehearse and seeing, you know, the, the pads that you have with the iPad, tell us like the inner workings of that.
And what does the pads actually do for you?
Yeah.
So, like I said, I, I'm a worship artist as well.
And I write a lot of music for the church.
And, we really utilize a lot of pads and a lot of, there's not a lot of dead space, you know?
And I feel like with pads, it kind of just, takes something very simple, like just singing and playing acoustic and then just adds just a whole other dimension and layer to everything you're doing.
So, I mean, it's really quite an incredible tool that's not utilized enough, you know, especially for live settings and stuff.
So.
Right.
Yeah, that's definitely something that when I'm thinking or hearing you speak just from now and, you know, 2023 compared to 20 years ago, that's somethin that would have to be done live.
And it's really giving, you know, young creatives, young professionals, young, you know, talen to the opportunity to, you know, really create, you know, top level quality product.
You know, something that's affordable because you're able to just download what wha program are using off of Apple.
So right now I'm actually using this app called playback.
And that's kind of like what I use for all of my, my backing tracks and stuff.
So since I'm a solo project, there are some times where I don't have a specific instrument on stage with me that I really want to have.
So, with this tool, you can kind of just import all your stems in and, you can play it back and take out specific things, put in certai things, all that kind of stuff.
So it's very, very useful, like I'm in.
So I feel like I'm in music class today, but Brant, you're going to stic around with us after the break.
This is Rhythm Lounge.
See you when we return.
You know, the.
I just want to be with you, so.
where will I find, will I ever find This field is very collaborative so coming in with a collaborative kind of mindset is very beneficial for you.
I've always enjoyed storytelling, and whether that's news or through radio or through TV, it was always just very fascinating to me.
It's very helpful from this program that I learned all roles.
And so now when I am on set I'm able to know what everyone is doing on set.
And that is something that I've learned here that I haven't learned anywhere else.
This school specifically is really good about that because they're really good at making you figure it out, kind of guiding you, but not forcing your hand as in like doing it for you.
An then it doesn't really set it.
You get to learn why it doesn't work.
Hey everybody, my name is Manny.
Welcome back to Rhythm Lounge again.
We have Brant with us from portamento.
Brant, thanks so much for sticking around.
And, so the songs that you performed at the beginning of the show, you perform two songs, you mix them which transitioned very nicely.
I know you said they were performed on the same key.
That's correct Yes, sir.
Gotcha.
And so what?
What's that key?
G flat.
Gotcha.
Okay.
And what was the nam of the first song and how, like, what was the inspiration behind that?
Yeah.
So the first song is actually a new song not released yet that's coming out this year.
Shameless plug.
But, that song is called When It All Goes Wrong and, I had actually written it.
While all my friends are asleep, all my friends are taking a nap.
And, it was just me and m and my friend who plays drums.
And he's like, well, do you just want to go and jam like you?
Everyone else is asleep.
We got nothing to do.
So we ended up going i and I had had just just a little part on guitar and I was like, well, let's try this.
Like I think it might work.
And we came up with a song like Skeleton Structure in 15 minutes.
And well, ever since that, we just kept building and building on it, and now it's where it is now in final stages of production.
So gotcha.
And what was the name of the second song?
And tell us a little bit about that one.
So the second song is called That Night and that song is actually out on all platforms Apple Music, Spotify.
But that song I actually wrote for my ex about, probably like 3 or 4 years ago, something like that.
And, yeah, it's just been a it's been a banger ever since I wrote every time I played it, everyone just, you know, that's their favorite.
So I just always, always keep it around.
So you Taylor Swift her, you know man, you kno you got to do it.
You got to do this, like banner back here.
Portamento.
What is the meaning or like the people or, you know, signatures that are on it.
And little sayings I see.
Don't cry.
I'll be all right.
What's the meaning or story behind that?
Yeah.
So, we had actually made this banner for tour, and, our intent was to have every single person there, every show, if they wanted to come up and writ anything that they were feeling like at that moment.
And, it was just something that we really thought could have been special, you know, and documented throughout the tour.
And, so the ones you see up there now, we're kind of, just the friends along the way that we that we were friends with and wanted to sign i before we, before we went off.
So but we never went off, s it's pretty, pretty empty still.
But it's going to go off.
It is going to go off.
What's your craziest backyard jam session story that you can share?
That's, you know, PG 13, but maybe, you know, things got a little too rowdy or a little too loud.
Yeah, there have been there have been a couple, you know, playing backyard shows.
It's a fun experience for sure.
But, you know, you always take a risk.
So I always say, like, if you're, if you're going to back shot backyard show, like, make sure you have people there that, you know, you know, tak take the unnecessary risk out of the equation, you know, but, I had a couple crazy shows.
I had a show in Beaumont an banning a lot of those places.
Really just had a lot of fu people at those backyard shows.
And, I've gotten thrown into mosh pits and stuff, and people have jumped off roofs and not got caught, you know, like, so I mean, it's just crazy.
It's a whole different world, you know, kids are just trying to have fun and have a good time.
And, bringing music is, the best way to do that.
So what are some sort of, you know, iconic or eve iconic local, you know, venues or places that you kind of aspire to, to perform at?
Oh, man.
You know the Fox Theater was such like a incredible, like situation to me.
I mean, I was very I'm very small now, you know, and to think like I got the opportunity to play there, not like just once or twice, but I've played there probabl like five times, you know, and, you know, it's just such a blessing.
And that was a venue that I really aspired to, to play at back when I was younger.
I remembe going to concerts all throughout high school there and seeing bands like The Neighborhood and all that kind of stuff and just thinking like, oh man, like, that's going to be me one day, like, for sure.
And you know, we did it.
We made it happen.
So, you know, that was just such a small and personal goal of mine.
You know, I would love to make it out to some LA places and LA theaters, like maybe the Belasco or the Teragra Ballroom, like, just spread out and venture out into new, new, unforeseen territory.
So where can we find you online.
Oh, man.
So you can find me on Appl Music, Spotify, all of the major platforms under portamento, Porta mento.
I also have a website at official portamento.com.
And then you can find all the socials, all that kind of stuff there.
So lastly, you have a song, last song, the third song.
What's that about and what's the name?
Yeah.
So this song is actually another unreleased song that's going to be on that EP this year.
It's called self-titled.
And it's just like a reflection on how you see yourself and, just the trials that come with, like, fitting in and fitting in with yourself and being okay with yourself.
Gotcha.
Sounds like something everybody can, you know, relate to.
So, ladies and gentlemen, one last time, Brent Murphy of Portamento.
[music playing] Hide out in the pouring rain.
Drink until the number ten.
Oh, no!
This is all I know So I'll take a hit, to forget the past.
This is good, but it'll never last.
Is the way it goes.
But it's all I know.
And I don't know.
My life is out of control.
Caus I've been having real bad days and some sleepless nights.
Thoughts of you running through my mind.
What do I look like?
It's self titled image of you.
So what can I do about the empty tank?
The check engine light Teachers tell me how to live my life And I don't know.
My life is out of control and I don't know.
My life is out of control.
Ghost my friends And hide away, convince myself that everything's okay?
While I burn my clothes, but it's all I know.
Oh, and I don't know.
My life is out of control.
Because I've been having real bad days and some sleepless nights.
Thoughts of you running through my mind.
What do I look like?
A self titled image of you.
So what can I do?
About the empty tank the check engine light Teachers tell me how to live my life.
And I don't know.
my life is out of control.
And I don't know.
My life is out of good control.
But I'm stuck on the memories.
And I'm stuck in fantasies.
And I know it's hard to do.
Like love somebody like you.
All my insecurities all my fears and anxieties Take me from you and to love somebody like you.
Cause I'm stuck on the memories.
Cause I'm stuck in the fantasies.
And I know it's hard to do.
But to love somebody like you.
And all my insecurities All my fears and anxieties Take me from you To love somebody like you.
To love somebody like you.
To love somebody like you.
