Hey, here we go, everybody.
We've made it to the quarter pole final weekend in the month of September.
Believe it or not, it's great to have you with us for game notes here on this Sunday on LP.
He's my Super Bowl champ partner Scott Shanley I'm Victor Howell Scott, it seems like this happens every year.
We look so forward to football season starting.
We take nine months to get ready for.
Yeah, we're in October running away.
We're done already now.
Yeah.
And we've talked about all year now you kind of know what you have as a team, as a coaching staff.
You understand what you have in your team, how you need to attack these upcoming games.
You now know it's the end of September.
You're getting into conference play.
You know exactly what your team does well, what it doesn't do well, what deficiency you have to hide.
So everybody should know exactly what they have in their teams.
Yeah, just about everybody playing conference play.
Nichols remember the first game of the season was a conference game.
They were not in conference on Saturday.
And of course the demons of Northwestern State enjoying their bye.
But we have a full rundown of games to go through on this Sunday.
So here's a look at what is coming up here over the next 60 minutes as we break things down.
Yeah, everybody loves lunch, even if it's a late night meal for lunch.
Got to work over in Lafayette.
We will show you all of the drama and the extra bonus football that was played in there.
Two lanes back on track now for visit to Skelly Field up at Tulsa, taking on the Golden Hurricane to open up conference play in the American.
And the streak is over and the Warhawks are celebrating Brian Vinson and company.
The boys get it done at home.
We'll tell you about the streak and how they got it done coming up in just a moment, but let's start things off over at Our Lady of Lourdes Stadium over in Lafayette.
The raging Cajuns in desperate need of a win.
We know the struggles as of late, the big loss at Missouri, the disappointing loss against Eastern Michigan.
They've had the quarterback issues, injury issues.
Well, they try to put it all together against Marshall, a team that has lost its coaching staff and many of its players when they left Marshall after last season to go to a different school.
But that Marshall program is the one that embarrassed the raging Cajuns at the end of the season to take the Sunbelt Conference title.
So the two teams kick off conference play in Lafayette Saturday night and oh baby, what a ball game we had in this one.
Let's kick things off here with ten three.
We're going to go fast forward.
All right second quarter.
It's ten three Thundering Herd Daniel Beal when he comes out swinging it again.
Great catch by Landon Strother.
That's good for ten yards.
Next play Beal to Dale Martin for 11.
It's an eight play drive that ends with Dylan Perry up the middle untouched.
Gets into the end zone.
This game is tied at ten under two minutes to go in the half.
Once Winfield comes into the ballgame he takes a direct snap at quarterback.
He takes it into the end zone.
Keeps it from six yards out at 1710 Cajuns.
But 30s to play in the half.
You just have to get a stop.
But they don't get it Carlos Del Rio Wilson finds DeMarcus Lacy 32 yards out.
He scores and we're tied at 17.
But folks we're just getting started.
Second play of the third quarter.
We got a problem Michael Allen has room and he's gone.
Not how you want to start the second half.
68 yards to the house and the herd are back up by seven.
Michael Decimal knows they need to get one back.
Not like this Daniel Beal one of two that's picked off this by Paul Hudson.
And he well score.
Scott oxygen big man has to get his hands on big fella.
And he does.
It's 3117.
Oh we're going the wrong way now.
It's 3420 and lunch has seen enough.
Winfield on the keeper for 38 yards.
Takes the tackle.
Keeps it going.
Great pickup for the cage that leads to this.
Two yard keeper from Winfield for scoring at home.
That's two touchdowns.
Now for lunch.
It's 3427 Cajuns right back into the thing.
Under five minutes to play.
Watch as lunch is under pressure and delivers a dime to Charles Robertson 45 yards.
And just like that we are tied under five minutes to go.
Now we have a minute to go.
Scott, you got to get a stop.
You've got to get a stop.
Oh no oh no.
He got behind the defender del Rio Wilson hits DeMarcus Lacey.
27 yards and Marshall's up by seven.
Remember we're under a minute.
The cages aren't done.
They pack the lunch.
They sign up for 60 Scott Corner.
The end zone once hits his man.
How about this?
He goes 75 yards and 40s still Martin with the touchdown to go in overtime.
First play silent Perry Scott talk about him on Saturday.
Show the running back tandem for the Cajuns first play 25 yards to touchdown in overtime.
Marshall needs a touchdown.
It's fourth and three.
They've got a score.
And they do Adrian Norton from three yards out.
Now we're going to double overtime.
Marshall's held to a field goal.
Then on second and seven.
Lunch tells everybody dinner's on me.
Gets it into the end zone.
Scrambles right from ten yards out.
He kept the ball on four of the five plays in the closing drive and double overtime.
And the Cajuns win it 54 to 51.
Scott, you took the over right.
Holy cow.
What A41 hundred.
Oh what a ballgame they had in Lafayette.
Lunch Winfield seven of 13 for 125 yards passing, 13 carries for a buck, 29 rushing yards and five touchdowns, and led the team in rushing.
By the way, red zone efficiency.
Both teams were very good.
The raging Cajuns just got there more five for five in the red zone.
Marshall just two for two.
Marshall, by the way, allows 102 rushing yards against the Cajuns 264 the Cajuns getting much needed by week before they return to action October 11th at James Madison.
Michael Desormeaux, your thoughts?
I don't know if I've ever been prouder of a group of people in my life, than these guys right here, you know, and everything that they've been through.
You know, we knew that we were going to have to scratch out a win, and that's what it's going to be the rest of the year.
I told them before I didn't know how.
You know, I didn't see it being like this.
But we're going to have to find a way to win at some point.
I was sitting there.
I was waiting cause that's called.
My name is like, get ready.
You going in?
And I read it up.
The boys I told them 17 points, and, it was, it was like, I think the third quarter was seven minutes up in the third quarter or something like that, maybe more.
But I was like, second half just started going this game.
We gotta we gotta fight.
That was all it was.
Everybody believe me, we that's just us.
It was number faith, you know, Lines, man is, you know, he he, he got the story, though, but, you know, the all start with faith.
Your opportunity to come take advantage of, you know, because you don't know.
We were getting another opportunity for that for a time like this, you know, and I think, you know, my coaches, I think, Coach Salgado, you know, my teammates for trust and believing that, you know, I can go in and perform the way I did.
That just tells me everything.
I don't know about this group.
You know, I knew from week one when we sat in here a really disappointed.
I knew we had a chance to have a really good football team.
And I still felt like we had enough and we still have enough to make a run and do some good things.
But the reality of it is, you know, you just the belief has to be there, even when it's difficult.
And.
Damn, we've been through difficult times this year.
Same vision, same goal, man.
We all got the same business and God is going to go for.
What I like to say is always stay motivated.
Believe you're not kept to believe.
You know, because I trust in my Lord and Savior, you know, until I tell the guys every time, like, if we believe we're going, we going to get what we need to get done, you know, and the guys, we hold each other accountable.
That's what we do in the defensive room.
You know, from the D line to the to the linebackers to the safety.
We hold the court accountable.
So when we seen a zero 17 that's you know everything is possible with the Lord.
You know that's that's how I feel tonight, you know was really just a testament to our coaching staff.
Did a phenomenal job putting together a game plan.
You know on offense that that we can move the ball and get some points and, and do some things with with what we had.
Our players were outstanding.
The guys that stepped up and Charles Robertson and obviously launching, you know, Jack Harrington movement, a tackle.
You can't say enough about there's a ton of individual efforts there that, that are, you know, that are unbelievable.
So, I'm just really proud and, you know, I couldn't be happier for a group of people than I am right now for those guys in that locker room.
Take a look at the numbers here, Scott heating up after halftime, if you will.
The game was tied at 17.
Remember at halftime.
And look at what they did.
The cages in the second half 30.
It's almost like yeah two games played even with the bonus football 37 points over 300 yards of offense just in the second half there.
Obviously the spark that lunch Winfield brought to the second half of this game is really the reason for those numbers there.
You heard echoes Allen Perry.
You just launched.
You just shake your head at those numbers.
And that's really the offensive explosion.
The spark that he ignited in the team.
And, to be down multiple scores and find a way to fight and finish that game and to win, it is unbelievable.
Can I can I draw your attention to the bottom line?
There are zero penalties in the first half.
It's amazing.
One in the second half, in overtime and the penalty came in overtime.
A running into the kicker, Marshall had missed a field goal.
Running into the kicker, they got a second opportunity and made the field goal before lunch scored the touchdown.
Yeah, you played five plus quarters with one penalty.
It's amazing.
That's a disciplined football team.
That's hard to do to a player and a coach.
Strive for perfection in a football game that's as close as you're going to get.
That's amazing to have one penalty and I've been in this position before.
I've been in a position where you're one and three, and I can't tell you how pivotal pivotal this game is to be.
Two and three versus one and four.
It changes your entire outlook on the season.
So a tremendous job battling back into that game, getting into double overtime and finding a way to win it.
And I'm sure you've been in positions where you needed somebody to step up who needed a spark.
Your quarterback Daniel Bill, throws two picks.
Lunch came in early in the ballgame and gets a touchdown.
So coach makes the call.
Lunch you're going in and it's time to eat.
And boy did he.
With the way you played and his composure Scott we should talk.
People know lunch is one of those players.
He came from such a great small town in southwest Louisiana and down in the river parishes.
He missed last season, basically all season because of an injury in preseason.
We've talked about Walker Howard.
We've talked about Daniel Beal before and lunch steps in and just wills this team to a victory and taking advantage of opportunities.
And a lot of people you know you get this opportunity to shine.
And he certainly shine.
Scoring touchdowns almost over 200 yards off.
It's almost three yards of offense.
And just the amount of time he got to play.
And you can see the belief in this offense just making plays.
Those explosive plays on offense getting the ball behind the secondary.
What he was able to do with his legs in the running game, that ignites a sideline, and it just resonates throughout the entire team.
That first pass you saw under pressure, this was a one under a minute to go.
He takes him basically 75 yards and 40s with that touchdown pass to composure.
And then of course the biggest play in double overtime here.
And as you mentioned Simon Perry's face said it all.
He just had lunch.
And what do what do you what do you say.
What do you do.
He comes in there and makes it leaves five touchdowns.
All that he was involved with to get the big win for the cages, who now get a much needed week off of.
Boy you much rather go into a break like this.
So with the momentum then the struggle there.
But congratulations to the Cajuns.
Congratulations to lunch.
I have a feeling of player of the week honors might be coming from the conference.
I would think.
I would think so for that young man.
For sure.
All right, let's go up to, conference USA.
Now, last time we'll be saying that for the Louisiana Tech Bulldogs because they are, of course, are getting ready to make their way to the Sun Belt.
Well, we'll get to see them play teams like UL, in the future.
Every season they were out west.
Been a very successful season for the Bulldogs.
Remember the tough loss at LSU but held the Tigers low.
Then they went home.
Got a conference win over New Mexico State.
They welcome Southern Miss and got that win Saturday night.
They were out in West Texas.
El Paso was the destination where the miners just got done, hosting a team 30 minutes down the road from them in terms of the Ulm Warhawks.
And now it was Louisiana Tech taking on the miners.
Here we go.
Probably the final matchup in conference play between these two teams, both of them leaving the conference defense came ready to play 12th play of the miners opening drive.
Malachi Nelson's picked off for the Bulldogs.
Tech's takes advantage Blake Baker Marquese Singleton Jr back of the end zone and it's seven nothing Louisiana Tech same score third quarter horrible moment here Scott.
Just horrible Kobe Fields with the interception.
But look he's trying to make yardage.
He plants.
It's the worst.
It's a non-contact injury.
Any time you see those are those are usually season ending injuries.
You hate to see it.
For this young man transferred from South Carolina at LSU ended up back home at Louisiana Tech.
Has been outstanding.
Yeah he's been a leader on that defense.
He was carted off there.
And the way coach talk about you're hearing in the moments probably something that has done for the year.
It's ten three tech in the fourth quarter.
Jalen Mickens Jalen Mickens gets the pass across the middle.
But he fumbles the miners pick it up a two plays later tech says I'll see your fumble recovery and raise your pick six Jakari foster steps in front of it.
He's going the other way 67 yards on the interception return.
Instead of being tied at ten, it's now 17 three Louisiana Tech five minutes to go in the ballgame.
Clay Devon and up the middle for four yards.
And it's 24 to 3 Louisiana Tech Bulldogs starting to pour it on.
But we saw the miners do this to the Warhawks one week ago.
They start to crawl back.
They needed just four plays to get back on the scoreboard.
Gorgeous pass here from Skylar Locklear, who's now in at quarterback to one Dame Davis Junior.
One day you might want to check the scoreboard before the dancing.
Another storm the Bulldogs in first play of the UTEp possession.
They saw that dancing.
I'll show you some dancing.
Alonzo Jackson, he takes the interception back.
Another pick six for the Bulldogs defense.
No scoring for tech.
They had enough to get everything done early.
The offense did fine.
But we had Tech's defense outstanding.
Five interceptions scored.
That led to 23 points in a game that you won by 19.
You think you think that makes a difference?
I'll tell you what.
This Louisiana Tech defense is getting close to nickname territory.
They're playing outstanding.
They need a nickname for these guys ASAP.
Giving up seven touchdowns all season.
Have scored five times on defense.
That's a yo stat.
That is a yo staff for sure.
After the game though, as you can imagine.
Thrilled with the victory.
But the focus on their lost defensive player Kobe Seals.
It's crushing to be honest.
I mean, it really is.
I mean, the guy is we know his story.
We know what he's gone through.
When you know what he's weathered, the adversity he's faced, and just how he plays the game.
Gosh.
I mean, it's just like, like, you know, even if he wasn't on our team, when you watch and know somebody like that and how he plays the game, the instincts and just the the way that he goes about it is, is just really awesome to watch and be around.
And so, to be honest, it is it's a it's crushing to have him go down the way he did.
You know, again, we'll evaluate it long term.
Short term, what it looks like.
And that's what I share with our players in real time on the sideline, the emotions that we all feel right now, they're real.
I mean, it hurts.
Yeah.
When you see a guy go down, but also when you're emotional clarity is low.
And we had to really snap back from that standpoint.
And we know that ten, you know, we know that Kobe would want us to finish this game and fly around and, and and we did that.
And so, you know, I think that, we'll have to continue to rally around him and he'll be a, you know, whether it's on the field or on the sideline, he's going to be a big part of our football team.
And, you know, I just I just can't say it enough, Matt, because I want people to know, like he loves being at Louisiana Tech.
He's a bulldog and he wants to win football games here.
And he's done a big part of that.
You know, so far this season.
Is one thing to say that you're mostly moved by somebody inspired by.
But that's a talent you need to get on the field.
And as you mentioned, he's running around the other way untouched, just goes down and you can tell immediately there was a problem.
And it's probably one that lingers in the midst of the year.
Yeah, he'll be probably most of the year.
But I think when you see his teammates over there, you hear coach come be talking about him.
I think sometimes these injuries to to really good players put put it into perspective as a player.
All these bumps and bruises complain about all the workload you complain about.
You realize quickly it can all end just like that.
So you put things into perspective.
You don't take any play for granted.
Kobe's been a huge part of this defense.
But this defense to me, they've been playing as good as defense.
Is anybody in college football?
There was so much discussion about Louisiana Tech on the offensive side with the offensive coordinator, with Franklin coming in and what he might do it.
But the defense to your point, Scott, they have one interception in each of the first five games played.
This season for over 15 years since that's happened.
And you mentioned five defensive touchdowns scored.
That's number one in the nation.
Forget about conference play.
They lead the nation in touchdowns scored on the defensive side of the ball.
And how about one additional one here.
They haven't allowed a rusher this season.
An individual rusher to go for more than 56 yards in a game.
Remember who they've played with.
Southern miss two games in conference.
Oh and by the way at Death Valley and LSU we know they've got their running issues.
More on that in a moment.
But you haven't allowed a rush to go north of 60 yards.
So any time you tell me that a defense is playing really good, run defense and holding people to stats like that tells me everybody is is selfless.
They're doing their job.
Guys are staying in their gas or doing whatever the defensive tells them for them to do.
They're not getting gas in the running game.
So it's a selfless defense.
It's an explosive defense.
Your number one job defensively we can talk about red zone defense.
Give up third down defense.
The number one job you have as a defensive football player is take the football away.
And they're doing that know you see what they did a turnover.
Now I know it's come is not going to be happy to.
They had four turnovers but they didn't lose any in terms of points.
But they take five turnovers converted into 23 points.
You see they were three for four in the red zone.
Did not allow the miners to get into the red zone.
Congratulations to the Bulldogs on a big win in the getting win.
Number two in conference play.
All right let's go back down to Hammond now.
Strawberry Stadium where the Southeastern Lions and Frank self-aware opening up play.
And they were welcoming in a brand new team for their conference West Texas Rio Grande Valley.
They're undefeated on the season, but they weren't ready for it.
The Lions have fallen there.
And Strawberry Stadium over in Hammond, opening drive nine play drive the Kyle Lowe cashes in on 38 yards for the touchdown as he goes right side.
Tyler finds the end zone and a seven nothing Lions.
That's the only score in the first quarter.
Plenty of points.
So in the second half Lowe's will be at it again at quarterback.
Finds Aiden Wilkinson.
That's good for 29 yards.
And it's 14 nothing.
Lions are just getting going.
They hold UT RGV.
They get the punt next Liam possession Jayden Henry up the middle just like that.
It's 21.
Nothing.
But I told you by the way you know the mascot of Texas Rio Grande Valley.
That's the buckaroos.
The victory was.
There you go.
And the paparazzi use a big play to get back in it.
Any Lamar Burger Uncorks one here.
Tavian caught 51 yards.
It's down to the three yard line.
Next play.
Marburger to Karen Lee, 21 seven.
Now the Vaqueros are on the scoreboard.
A minute left in the half.
Ian Connor, like Goodley, remember his story at southeastern left, came back to southeastern.
He jumps in front of this Marburger Pass and sets the Lions up for the second quarter.
Lots of scoring, even though there was a lot in the first quarter, but he's a part of it.
Getting that interception and it sets up the Lions Carson Camp throws a rope to Jalen Damasio.
Yep that's a touchdown.
And it's 28 seven Lions in good shape 2810 at the half.
Second half full of monster plays.
First one for the Vaccaro Marburger hits Tony Diaz.
Yeah that's a 71 yarder when it's all said and done.
Had to be a defensive breakdown all alone by 8 to 10 yards.
He gets into the end zone and it's 2817.
But three plays later the Lions have theirs.
Deondre Jackson and look at that hole and see it Scott.
He's pulling away from people 66 yards for the 2035 17.
What a hole up the middle.
He takes it all the way to the house later in the third camp is now back in a quarterback.
We know Frank Schauffele likes to use two quarterbacks can throw praise on all alone 29 yards for the touchdown 4217 for Carroll's.
Would add some more points, but it's not enough to get that first win in Southland Conference play.
The Lions take care of business at home, and they do it in impressive fashion as they get the win by the final score 45 to 31.
The Andre Jackson 13 carries 121 yards and a touchdown.
The Lions had five fumbles.
They only lost one.
After the game.
Frank Seville said there's not a lot of highlights.
Why you want, you want.
Well, you played two quarterbacks.
He wasn't happy about the turnovers.
He wasn't happy about some of the mistakes they made.
But they did have a season high 540 yards and two quarterbacks combined to go 20 and 25 for 252 yards.
They're back in action next week.
And over in Lake Charles, it's another conference matchup against the Cowboys for McNeese.
The Nicholls Colonels remember they're on a four game road.
This one's at Eastern Kentucky.
Again they did not jump back into conference play Saturday.
Remember they've already played one a big one that they won against Ewing.
First meeting between the Colonels and the Colonels.
Third play of the game Deuce Logan to kill Brock Junior on the screen.
He finds some room in six yards later, he's dancing in the endzone.
Seven nothing nickels.
Second quarter Brady Hensley.
He's going to find some room up the middle and ends a three play drive with a 68 yard touchdown.
We're tied at seven and that's the halftime score later for Nicholls.
Deuce Hogan quarterback under some pressure he's going to try to throw it away.
The problem is it's not good enough.
He never got outside the hash.
That's a grounding call.
So you lose yardage and you lose it down very next play Hogan throwing the screen.
Unfortunately Brock Junior fell down.
Kaden Smith did not.
But he plays for the other team.
Walks into the end zone.
And it's 14 seven Eastern Kentucky.
The atmosphere going to make it 17 seven.
In the fourth.
Nicholls with the ball again in the shotgun I love the way the night went Scott in the shotgun and the snap hits.
The tight end in motion is Kentucky jumps on the loose ball Myles Paquette then 11 yards to the back of the end zone for the touchdown.
They would go on to add one more field goal.
And Eastern Kentucky gets the win in the Battle of Colonels over Colonels 27 to 7.
242 rushing yards for Eastern Kentucky, something Nicholls will have to clean up before they get back into conference play.
Red zone efficiency Nicholls made it twice that have any success.
East Kentucky was successful on both of the trips as they improved to two and three.
The Nicholls Colonels now lost four straight after that season opening win over UW, but they can straighten things out in conference play when they get back at it.
October 4th, they'll be over.
Beaumont, Texas taking on Lamar.
Destination Monroe for homecoming, you old Monroe on the Warhawks back home welcoming Arkansas State, a team they have not won or beaten in quite some time.
This is the newly named Rice Bowl rivalry, if you will.
First play of the game.
Eight more men to the Braylen McReynolds.
It's 19 yards with a flag would bring it back.
Hopefully not a sign of things to come.
Two plays later.
An even bigger mistake.
Armenta picked off by Brandon Grill.
And that's a house call 32 yards on the return and 90s into this ballgame.
Arkansas State on the road is up seven.
Nothing but no panic for the Warhawks.
It's ten nothing Arkansas State after the first quarter.
That's when the wall defense wakes up and helps the team settle down.
Second and six for the Wolves.
It's a loss of 13 Dillon Howell on the sack.
No relation.
Next play third and 19.
And this time it's Cafferty Wells with the pressure back to back 13 yard sacks.
Yeah that'll help with field position.
Now the Warhawks get the ball on their own.
Eight.
McReynolds takes care of that.
Look at him.
Hit the brakes.
Go to the opposite side.
24 yards and Ulm has some breathing room.
12th play of the drive.
Armenta moving dancing pivoting.
Shifting.
Throwing into the end zone.
And he finds him Julian Nixon.
And it's ten seven Bryant Vincent pumped.
Get the crowd going.
Ten seven Wolves later in the second for the Wolves.
Fourth and seven from the Warhawks 36.
Too far for a field goal.
Too close for a punt.
They go for it.
The pass is broken up, turnovers on downs and it only took the Warhawks six plays to cash in are meant menta a gorgeous pass over the top to Jake Godfrey.
1410.
And just like that, the Warhawks are on top.
End of the first half.
Arkansas State goes for field goal.
Scott, it's so low it bounces off the backside of a little lineman taking on the look.
Never had a chance to bounces off of a lineman and shakes it so you own Monroe holds on to the four point lead.
Third quarter more defense Noah Flemings with the pressure.
At first it was called an incomplete pass, but after review it was called a fumble and he went and recovered it.
Four plays later.
Watch Nick Reynolds scoop a couple of moves, gets it into the end zone.
18 yards and a touchdown.
2110.
You are Monroe under six to go in the game.
2116 Warhawks check that 2816 Zach Palmer.
Smith runs it into the end zone.
Huge homecoming win for you on Monroe.
They finally get past the Wolves 2816.
Here's Coach Vincent after the game.
I want to start off, by just saying how proud I am of our coaching staff and our players.
The focus, you know, just the preparation.
You know, it was tremendous.
15 straight years.
There's a long time that streak is over.
I felt like last year, 21, 21, we watched that game a lot our first year here at third place, 2121.
I felt like we let them off the hook last year and that was on me.
And this year we wanted to make sure we didn't let them off and we didn't got down ten to nothing.
We didn't blink.
There was no panic, there was no nothing.
They came out and played a different defense than we'd seen.
The first four games.
And and kudos to them.
They had a great plan.
We made adjustments and you see the rest.
And there's been a lot of sleepless nights.
I mean, since that last game last year, just not only were so close and by won that game in year one, but, I think it's just the big tell of the hard work that we put in.
And this isn't just a one week preparation.
This has been a 12 month preparation getting to this point.
So surely proud of the way the guys hung in there.
And like you said, we were down ten.
Nothing.
We guys didn't blink.
So our just tells a lot about our culture and the guys we have on our team.
We wanted to keep their quarterback in the pocket.
He was making all of his big runs inside A and B gaps, so we wanted to contain him and not pressure, not pass him up so we could contain me in the pocket.
And I thought we did a great job of really just collapse in the pocket.
I don't know how many sacks we had.
I think we had several six sacks.
I could say that defensively we harassed him pretty good and we chased him a lot.
So just super proud of our defensive staff and our defensive players.
I mean, they were just relentless.
Sometimes it takes time.
I wish we could be a late game on it.
Everything.
But you got to grow.
You got to learn and you got to be able to sit there and look in the mirror and I'll go.
I'll give you an example.
Last week at UTEp, we had the bowl twice with a chance to end it, and we talked about that all week.
And we focused on it.
And we had the opportunity today and we ended the ball into the game with the ball in our hands.
Again.
That's growth.
We just got to continue to grow, continue to climb and taking it one day at a time and the hold on ourselves and really demand, you know, we picked last in the conference 14 out of the conference.
We picked last in the West.
See where we're at it to you.
How about them Ole hogs?
Yeah.
Thank yo.
Well coach thought people know what I'm on notice.
He's talked about that for a while.
What this team can do 7 to 13 on third down conversions three for three in the red zone for the Warhawks.
You see the numbers there against Arkansas Arkansas State.
You heard of Scott say 19 years.
That's the last time they beat all state.
They have had a problem with this team, what they want of getting the win.
And I want to start there before we break down some more in this game about Brian Vinson and what you think, I love the fact of how he's taken us in stages in the rebuild.
Remember in our preview show, he talked about the retention, the guys he has coming back, what this program can do last week, third road win since, what, 2018 a third of all runs is 2020.
First non-conference road win since 2018.
He's breaking things down for this program now.
You beat a team for the first time in 19 years.
I just like the way he's approaching this rebuild.
Yeah, absolutely.
He's building the foundation.
Right.
And I think the one thing that they have to put that chip on the shoulder and you hear him talk about it again, is where they were, where they were picked in the preseason.
Nobody expects anything out of this team.
And I love last week his his postgame on field interview that we played here when he said, get behind this team to the community and the school, get behind us, rally behind us.
And you don't do that as a coach unless you believe you have a really good football team and you've got a really good football team that's playing really good along the line of scrimmage.
And he said that back there in July.
I don't mind being picked for team because I don't think people are sleeping on what we've got last year.
Five and one out, the gates lost six straight and the season went five and seven.
Play a conference game, win a conference game.
He's building.
And it started with defense because that defense was really harassing.
And you heard him talk about it there just a moment ago.
What they did the pressure a ton of pressure.
They were putting their six sacks and 11 tackles for loss.
Guy that came from all different sides, all different forms.
But the quarterback and Arkansas State never was able to adjust to where the Warhawks were coming from.
Yeah, that much pressure.
Usually people look at the sacks and they say, well you should win the game.
But 11 tackles for loss, you're playing on the other side of the line of scrimmage.
You're disrupting an offensive flow.
You're disrupting, disrupting their timing.
Plus that you're taking the football away as well.
You got a couple takeaways.
Linebacker Chris Robinson led the led the defensively tackles.
So I think when you look at what they're doing running the ball offensively again complementary football.
We talk about every single week and then you're playing good defense behind it.
Playing on the other side the line of scrimmage and attacking downhill, being aggressive defensively.
That's a good recipe for success.
And so let's talk about one other compliment.
When you talk about complementary football with the defensive pressure that they put on, they're also on the run game.
They only allowed 17 rushing yards the entire game to Arkansas State.
Meanwhile we've talked about McReynolds.
But there are others now in the running back room.
They ran for 217 to 200 yard difference on the ground for some of the teams in the state that we talk about struggling with the running game, that's how you get it done in terms of ball control and moving to 17 to 17 and the rushing game for what?
The Warhawks.
They have outstanding backs, but with McReynolds and Zach Palmer, Smith second average, almost a first down every time he touched the ball.
But that being said, when you have that much success in the running game, you have to go to the five guys up front who are blocking every single play.
Just like defensively shutting down the run game.
You have to be selfless offensively when you run the football well, that means you have a bunch of selfless offensive linemen who are just rotating people, moving off the line of scrimmage.
And I think when you have that recipe, when you can do that every single week and run the football like these guys are doing it, you have a chance to be in every football game.
Yeah, big win for the Warhawks.
They'll jump out of conference for one more week and then back jump back into Sunbelt Conference to finish off the rest of the year.
But congratulations on a big win and for ending a 19 year losing skid to Arkansas State for homecoming.
What a way to win it up there in Monroe.
All right.
So now let's turn to one of the bigger games, not only in the state but in the country.
This one was played up in Oxford, Mississippi.
The Magnolia Bowl with LSU ranked number four in the country, taking on number 13 Ole Miss.
We thought it could be some problems here, but we thought there'd be some opportunities for LSU with the running game more than at the moment, and it was a grind, but it always is between these two teams.
Let's take you up to Oxford and show you how this one played out here.
Because we look at this matchup.
You know what Lane Kiffin could do offensively.
You know what LSU brings to the table.
Could they stop the high flying Ole Miss Rebels team.
What kind of challenges would LSU defense face.
Well let's get things started.
And neither team did anything on an opening drive.
This is LSU's second time to have the ball.
Thus, Meyer across the middle.
Xavien Thomas 50 yards on the completion.
Tigers get things moving nice and early for plays later.
Lets Meyer to trade as green.
Watch this play.
The ball is tipped and Nick Anderson is Nick on the spot for the touchdown.
Scott, take a look at this tip flick.
Be around the football.
Good things will happen.
That's a great job in being where it needs to be.
And he pulls it in holds the balance.
You'll see how the ball wants to move a little bit, but he brings it into his chest.
And just like that, LSU has the lead.
Seven nothing now obvious as an 18 play drive.
There was also just a field goal.
So it's seven three when Los Meyer has the Tigers moving up for the red zone.
Bad decision here.
Throws in coverage picked off by White at Williams at the Ole Miss 12.
Missed opportunity under six to go in the first half Trinidad Chambliss right side.
But this one's picked off D.J.
Pickett and he is gone.
Pick six for the Tigers.
Gets it.
Wait does that say flag.
That might.
You got to be kidding me that you're right.
Momentum swing right.
Pass interference.
Next play.
I don't need to tell you that.
Pass can do that.
Can't.
No.
Can't do that.
So two back to back defensive pass interference plays.
Then the next play Ken Lacy takes it 15 yards over 40 yards of penalties on that drive for LSU defense.
And it's ten seven Ole Miss under 20s to go in the half.
Chambliss it's Kaden Lee for the touchdown 285 yards for Ole Miss in the first half.
But it's just 17 seven LSU has two field goals in the third quarter.
So at 1713 they are still within shouting distance.
Look at Quan Lacy.
Move the pile.
Good gracious Quan.
That's like a rugby scrum.
Takes all the way down to the three yard line.
Two plays later, former Tiger Logan Dix punches it in from six yards out.
It's 2413 under six to play Harlem.
Berry gets his first collegiate touchdown 2419 Ole Miss.
So you're still within shouting distance.
Got to get the ball.
Got to be able to convert fourth and three for Ole Miss to seal it.
You've got to get a stop.
Fourth and three.
They're going for it.
Oh and that's why.
And he plays a smart play.
Just sit down because now game's over.
And that's what happened.
Lane Kiffin celebrating in a big way as the rebels get that monkey off their back.
And they take care of Lake Baker's defense and LSU as a whole.
24 to 19 to drop the Tigers their first loss of the season.
Oh one in conference play rushing yards problem rip alert needs to be addressed 166 for the rebels, just 57 for LSU and third down conversions.
You two of 11 for LSU.
You're not winning on the road or anywhere with that.
Ole Miss was eight of 17.
Next up for LSU a bye week thanks to work on.
And then you host the Gamecocks from South Carolina Brian Kelly your turn.
Look Garrett Nelson has got to play better.
Every player on offense has got to play better.
And and then we have to be more consistent on defense.
I mean, we there's not one guy that you will point out cocky and go, wow, that was the reason why we lost.
There's there's many, many players that have to play their best when their best is needed.
We were we weren't very good on third down.
Right.
We've been a really good third down team.
We we have to be better on third down.
And that's not just Garrett.
You know that's that's we got to get open.
Our coaches got to get our guys in a position where they can make some plays and look you saw it.
We didn't.
We struggled with completing a deep ball where they they did very very well completing the deep ball.
So I again I don't want to go too long on the answer.
But this is not a Garrett Ness Meyer problem.
This is an entire football team of guys doing their job at a higher level.
We started a true freshman in right tackle.
Chris Curran didn't know he was going to start until, 22 minutes on the clock.
And pre game, I'm proud of him.
I'm proud of him.
He went in there and he's not afraid.
It's not perfect.
But I'm proud of the kid.
He went in there and he battled his butt off.
It's a long season.
You've got to do that.
What's the message to your teammates?
Well, you hit it, you know, right on the head.
My, it's it's a long season.
We're disappointed with today.
Ole Miss was the better football team today.
But tomorrow comes.
And we have to realize that I love the way this team prepares.
We have to perform better.
Our performance was not good enough today.
And that performance has to be synchronized with both offense and defense.
We can't play sporadic football where we have spurts of really good offense and spurts of really good defense.
We have to put that together, and that starts with your players recognizing that they have to do their job, not somebody else's.
And they do.
All right.
So the challenges are laid out there for the players.
Got everybody.
Everybody's got to do their jobs better.
We're going to talk about some of that in just a moment.
Total yards 254 for LSU.
I think that 146 in the first half.
What they were able to do in terms of their numbers improving in the first half was not great offensively.
Second half was even worse for total yards.
You heard it mentioned a couple of things.
There's a lot to unpack of what Brian Kelly just said.
I agree with you.
I think the defensive interception for a touchdown to go out 14 three comes all the way back.
Back to back.
Defensive end a pass interference plays leads to a touchdown.
Instead of you being up 14 three.
Now they swing.
Yeah huge swing in the game.
And I say that because the struggles you've had offensively when you see plays like that happen in the game, for you to be able to take that touchdown off the board, knowing offensively you haven't played well, not just against Ole Miss.
We haven't played well in the last couple of weeks.
Those type of plays usually come back to haunt you because it's three points on the board.
Now you're asking your offense to do something they haven't really shown life.
You know, in a few weeks be able to do third downs.
LSU was two for 11 in the ballgame.
Scott they had third and 20.
They had a third and nine.
They have third and 11.
Now a lot of I mean a lot of that leads to the issues with running, which we're going to talk about in a moment.
But you can't be playing that far back behind the chains.
How many?
13, 11, 13, 20 do you have in the playbook?
Not many.
That playbook gets really shallow when you get into really just third and seven plus, because any route that you need to develop beyond seven, eight, nine, ten yards takes time.
And if you're not past protecting well enough, the contractors have enough time to set up.
That's why the the percentage rate of converting third and seven plus are so low, because you need the time to get those rest to develop this offense.
Everything just goes back to the running game.
It really does.
Defensively, I don't think they're being as aggressive defensively because the offense isn't playing as well.
And now defensively you feel like you have the whole team to 14 points.
So I think a lot of these things that are trickling throughout the football team start with the offensive line and not be able to run the football and the offensive line could be an issue to remember.
You've got 2 or 3 guys playing in the NFL this year that were in purple and gold one year ago, so guys are still trying to adjust up there, but it really does go back to.
And I know Brian Kelly did not like the question a couple of weeks ago.
We don't have to rehash that.
I think it was because of the timing being the first question after beating Florida this, we're going to talk about the elephant in the room.
It is the rushing game 57 total yards against Ole Miss.
Can I remind you we talked about this on Saturday Scott.
Ole Miss has the worst rushing defense in the SEC.
It's almost like you didn't even try to challenge him when you did.
If it didn't work, they pulled the ripcord and went to the passing game.
And I think that's part of the problem.
When you have a really good player at quarterback, a Heisman Trophy, cannot you?
You default to let's throw the football right away.
You don't even commit to the running game.
Well, the problem is you have talented running backs at LSU.
In the running game, the offensive line needs to play better.
The offensive line needs to move people off the line of scrimmage.
And that's not happening.
There were times in the passing game that Ole Miss was rushing three guys and getting sacks.
That's unacceptable.
When you're five offensive linemen a block and you go back and look at some of the plays on the end, the play chart from this ball game, and they had say a first, first play might have been a pass and then a run that went for two yards.
And then it was just an Iron Mama and then a punt, and then it would be a Meyer pass that would go incomplete.
One run attempt.
And then even when they got a first down, the next few plays were all passes.
There's just now no confidence there.
Right now I know some guys are banged up, but he has said it.
If you're going to win in the SEC, you have to be able to run the ball and right now they can't.
Period.
Yeah.
How many times we heard Coach Kelly go back and Coach Saban he's Alabama Kirby Smart.
This is a line of scrimmage league.
If you're going to win you're going to be SEC champions are going to get to where you want to get to in Atlanta.
You have to be able to control the line of scrimmage.
And right now it's run game and the pass game.
LSU has concerns along that offensive line and offensively, I know the default button is easy to push when you have no smarter quarterback.
Let's just keep it on the football.
But you need to help him out as well.
Well, another get a bye week to work on it before they welcome the Gamecocks from South Carolina to Death Valley in two weeks.
Let's go to the bluff.
It was a big one.
Speaking of bye week, southern was just coming off of one getting ready for Jackson State.
The big showdown.
This was the Swac championship one year ago Jackson State on the bluff Saturday night taking on the Jaguars looking for some of that second half confidence and talk to Terrence Graves this past week.
He was nice enough to join us in studio.
Talk about what his team needed to do for the Boombox Classic.
You know, the fans, you know the dancers are going to be on their A-game.
Well, it's three nothing.
Jackson.
We pick up the action.
Jay state's opening possession Ahmad Miller.
Watch him hit the brakes cuts back goes 18 yards.
And that is going to help set up a scenario.
Davenport on fourth and goal scenario.
Davenport up and over and into the end zone.
And it's seven three Jackson State huge swing before half.
It's 1310 southern.
The Jags are inside the 20.
Ashton Strother in at quarterback.
Because he's going to get picked off after southern has this long run by Trey Holley who finds his way into the end zone.
Great run by Holley to give him the lead.
Here's the swing I'm talking about.
Holley sets him up with a three point lead passing into the end zone, but he's picked off here by Kim Sellers.
Now Jay State has to pump deep in its own territory.
It's fourth and three.
Oh a mistake.
Remember Terence Graves talked about those hidden yards right here.
No turnovers have penalties.
Right.
But special teams runs into the kicker.
It was fourth and three.
It's now a first down because the five yards gets him a first down.
And before the end of the half it takes some 14 seconds 51 yards.
Jacoby and Morgan to play on to free.
And it's 1713 Tigers just like that.
Huge momentum swing.
Jags in the third.
Now on fourth and one.
Denied losing yardage here.
Jay state answers to Ariel Davenport again a three yard touchdown 2413 Tigers.
And we've seen this movie before Jackson State starting to pull away fourth quarter Travis Terrell from six yards out is going to make it 31 to 13.
Once again.
Southern struggling in the second half.
Under five to play.
It's the final dagger Morgan hits Nate Rembert.
He makes one move keeps his balance.
There's the move.
And now it's a track race.
And he's going to win it 82 yards.
When it's all said and done.
Scoreless again in the second half.
The Jaguars continue to struggle after the break.
This one cost them a big win at home against Jay State, with the final score 38 to 13.
Third down efficiency Southern struggle three of 12.
Jackson State better than 5,050% for the game.
How about 13 penalties?
Coach Graves that is going to eat him alive.
13 penalties for 111 yards.
They now have another bye week, so they have more time to work on things before the Jags return to the field October 11th.
That'll be at the soon Cookman staying in the Swac, Grambling and Prairie View, this one being played at the Cotton Bowl, the classic up in the Cotton Bowl that is just open for a 2 or 3 week run there in the city of Dallas, taking on Prairie View first quarter Tevin Carter he has the keeper goes left side for two yards.
It's seven nothing.
Panthers later in the first Grambling is driving quarterback Xavien to set with the pass.
He's going to find C.J.
Knighton.
He gets some good yards after the catch and after initial contact still goes.
Gets it all the way down inside the 15 yard line.
It's a total of a 32 yard gain.
You bet young man.
First down Grambling then ends the drive Theodore how about 27 yard field goal.
It's good.
Seven three Panthers second quarter.
Does that.
Would like to have this one back out of the shotgun.
You watch it from the back of the end zone.
Sees a man but doesn't see the defender.
Throws it high and it's picked off.
Trey for Randall.
Takes the ball away.
You see another look at it as he just misses his receiver, but he throws it too high and he's back there waiting for the interception.
After the teams trade punch in the second quarter, Prairie View is going to get this rushing touchdown Cameron Bonner he takes a jet sweep eight yards as he cuts it back gets it into the end zone.
And it's 14 three Panthers.
Now we've seen Grambling faced deficits before.
They've been able to fight back.
Let's go to the fourth quarter.
It's 21 six preview at this point.
Grambling here they come.
The passing touchdowns is that finds Keith Jones junior 16 yards.
Watch Jones as we take another look at you've heard the old Randy Moss.
You got Moss.
You got lost.
Look at him up and over.
The defender walks into the end zone from two yards out.
And it's 2113.
Tigers on their way back.
But later in the fourth Lamar McDowell runs right through the heart of the Grambling defense.
Nobody stops them.
40 yards later they do.
But now it's down to the 15 yard line.
It's a great gain.
Then the very next play, Prairie View cashes it in.
Chase Brinkman from 15 yards out and Peyman gets it out of the end zone 2813 Panthers.
At that point, Grambling unable to make it any closer of a ballgame.
And they start out the Swac season on the wrong side of the call.
A preview gets the win 2813 to go to two and zero in conference play.
Grabbers three and two overall.
Now all I want is that 43 chunks, 21 to 43, only a buck 61 and the three interceptions very costly for the Tigers Trey Bradford, but 14 rushing attempts for 88 yards as Grambling now has a bye week.
And they will get ready to get back on the field in two weeks.
At home against Texas Southern.
Back to South Conference play.
We go back to Utah on the sideline, returning to South in conference action and his first year back with McNeese trying to get the Cowboys to turn things around, taking on Stephen F Austin.
First quarter for the Cowboys.
Fourth and one from the 20.
Javonte citizen.
When you have a young man like that, you go for it on fourth and one and he does gets it into the end zone.
Seven nothing.
Cowboys second quarter Steven if Austin is going to answer with a passing touchdown Sam like Backpedals then throws and Blaine Green seems to be all alone.
He gets it into the end zone 40 yards on the touchdown.
Had to be a break in the defensive scheme there.
And it's tied at seven.
Still in the second quarter.
And another passing touchdown.
Medlock this time finds Kylan Harris.
After you buy some time over the middle for a 14 yard score.
And the Lumberjacks are up 14 seven.
Later in the second, one of the six times that McNeese quarterback Jake Strong was sacked.
Yep.
One of six times he was sacked.
That's not going to help on the offensive end.
It's 14 seven at the break.
Third quarter in the red zone for the Cowboys haven't they.
Since.
And this time fumbles at the five yard line Stephen if Austin takes advantage of that close to getting points on the board the opportunity is missed.
And then on the ensuing drive to make matters worse, they'd like to Kylan Harris.
That's 76 yard.
Well, had a lot of big plays, a lot of busted coverages defensively.
It hurts my heart to see these on coverage I bet.
I mean we're talking 50, 60, 70 yard plays here 21 seven Lumberjacks.
Remember you were in the red zone.
We could have been tied at 14.
Now down 2410 driving again Jake Strong's pass goes through the hands of Jesse Campbell Charles Demings with the good defense.
Sukkot on the football with the pick.
Here's one more look at it.
Here's a deflection.
The bounce in the right place at the right time Stephen at Folsom goes on to double up so close.
You had the opportunity there for get some points.
But those turnovers make a big difference 3417 McNeese now 1 in 4 on the season.
Oh and one in conference play as Stephen Boston improves to three and two overall.
Three turnovers led to 17 lumberjack points.
You see you lost the game by 17.
You want to look for the keys to the game next up.
They'll be back at home the stadium as they welcome the Lions from southeastern.
We started the program with a big conference win from one of the teams here in the state.
Would look like we looked at big wins from you and Monroe.
We saw Louisiana Tech big conference wins as well.
And how about that one for Louisiana.
Let's end the show with a big win in conference play.
I've talked about the Tulane Green Wave coming off of that tough a tough loss in Oxford.
They were back on the road, Skelly Field in Tulsa Town.
It's got to play a lot of stomping ground a lot a lot of barrels on the football field.
That's about all I could do there.
But here we go.
Opening drive after a 24 yard completion Jake Retzlaff hits Bryce Bohanon.
This is good for 27 yards.
Remember Retzlaff struggled against Ole Miss one week ago.
He got it going early in this one.
Three plays later Retzlaff from eight yards out.
And it's seven nothing Tulane.
Tulsa is going to respond with some trickery here out of the shotgun.
The handoff the pitch the toss back.
And yeah Grayson Tempest is wide open.
First reception of the season and he's two yards short of a touchdown.
But that's okay because two plays later let's bring in Tim Hartman.
And Tim Hartman plays on the defense.
But he went up and over that big body.
And we're tied at seven second quarter fourth and four for Tulane.
Retzlaff rolls out finds Chaz Preston for the first down.
Very next play Javon Gordon 12 yards as he goes right side makes one cut untouched into the end zone.
And it's 14 seven way huge play for Tulsa here watch Brody Foley.
He's your tight end.
Watch him just release off the defender.
The soft touch and that big body bodies off to the races.
Another big play Scott 72 yards don't fault two lanes for the effort.
But he was just too far away to get to the end zone.
We're tied at 14 later for Tulsa on the pitch.
Don't hits him in the face mask.
Not where you want to toss it to your man.
Turnover Tulane jumps on it back to Mr.
Gordon 25 yards here.
Dashes into the end zone.
We've seen one already.
How about this one up the middle.
Makes a move.
We're going to need some new laundry pulling that shirt together.
But that's touchdown number two.
And it's 2414 at the half.
Watch this execution Scott.
Everybody goes left.
But look two people come right wide open.
Retzlaff to Brice full hand inside the ten.
That sets up the man of the day Mr.
Gordon.
Once again if you please.
Third touchdown as he bounces off the defense in the middle 31 to 14.
Green wave at this point yeah.
Nice day for Tulane up at Tulsa town to improve the four and one and one and oh in conference play they win it 31.
The 14.
It's a greenway roll at 437 yards Gordon 15 carries for 78 yards and three touchdowns on the day Tulane another one of the many teams in the state with a bye week.
Next week they will get ready for East Carolina in two weeks.
Head coach John Summerall we're drinking decaf yet.
I think in a league play, if you can win at the line of scrimmage, which I think we have the ability to, and you can control the run game.
They ran for 2.4 yards a carry.
That's a recipe for success.
And then, you know, we were able to for 4.3, which is nice.
But we stopped the run and that's a huge credit to our defensive line or second level players as well.
Our linebackers, I thought, fit some things good.
But the defensive front, I did really feel them a lot today.
Come off a loss like Ole Miss.
We knew that wasn't our standard.
So I felt like we had to come out here and prove something.
And he did that today.
He's a twitchy, physical, violent player.
He plays with a great motor.
He's active with his hands.
He's a he's a hard gonna block, you know, during spring ball he was really disruptive in our practices.
And I'm sitting here sitting there going, all right this guy's a load.
He's a he's a handful for our offense to deal with.
And I knew that as we got the league play I thought you would start to feel him even more.
Which he made his presence known today for sure with how he played.
What are your impressions of Javon Gordon on the other side of the ball?
Freshman scored three touchdowns.
I talked to that young man all the time.
Mr.
True freshman, that's a beast right there.
Coming into spring practice, it helped a lot.
I had a lot of growing pains and just being able to learn from that and make significant strides throughout the end of spring and throughout the summer into fall camp.
It helped.
It helped a lot.
Needless to say, he was the one that got to lead the hullabaloo in the locker room just now.
Yeah.
15 carries, seven eight yards, three touchdowns for a true freshman for anybody.
It's good for a true freshman, man.
I'm very impressed with the way he's playing.
He's a physical, gritty, hard nosed runner.
He's a really smart guy.
He's very detailed.
I really like the way he's playing.
Just very proud of his effort and his hard work paid off.
He works really hard at his craft, and he's very consistent, very detailed and, not surprised because he does it every day.
This team has won 13 conference road games in a row in Oregon.
That's not true.
This team is one one because of the Army game you're against.
This team has won one conference game.
Okay, I was just how okay, that I'm not trying to be rude.
This team's not.
Yeah, I get you.
I think we're here.
You're not worried about anything that happened before this year, is what you're saying.
I don't care what happened last year.
I don't care what happened last week.
Yeah, I want to win a game every week right now.
And we got a lot of work to do to get ready to win East Carolina.
We we honestly, we suck right now, to be honest with you.
We saw the other guy get a lot better.
Decaf.
Decaf stat I love John's enthusiasm.
Yeah.
And no and no they're not that bad because I've had one loss against a very good Ole Miss team.
Let's talk about the freshman for a minute.
Javon Gordon, with what he was able to do with the three touchdowns we've seen, Retzlaff leads his team in rushing from the quarterback position.
We've been watching them kind of mold themselves.
We've talked about the development.
We've talked about how we both like Summerall and his approach.
But you're getting into conference play, and if you're going to start watching a freshman out develop to do that, along with what Retzlaff can do when he's on his game, not only passing but running, now you're talking about a defense.
You've been there.
Yeah.
What are you going to do now.
Like now you're put them on their heels right.
Yeah.
And you can see that young man.
He's got that burst when you watch film and you see guys move it a little different pace when they stick their foot in the ground and change direction and accelerate faster else that's special.
You need to get him the ball more.
And also you talk about Retzlaff.
You can't run your quarterback into the ground all year.
So as nice as it is to have restless legs and he's been really dynamic in the run game, you need to take that load off him.
And this young man, he needs to touch the ball more.
He's got he's got burst ability.
Yeah.
And boy he certainly did short and a very fine way.
It's also now on the defensive side of the ball.
We're really focused a ton on Tulane's defense.
But Santana Hopper you heard him there on some of the comments.
We want to show you some of the plays because he had himself an outstanding day.
When you look at his total number six tackles, one and a half sacks, four tackles for loss against Tulsa in the announces.
If you're watching this game.
They couldn't stop talking about this young man.
And they kept saying each other what we're saying Hopper a lot.
Yeah they did because he has really started to emerge as a defensively.
And nobody was happier than the Sunbelt Conference to see him leave.
He was the best.
He was the top guy, top defensive lineman.
The Sunbelt Conference last year, first team all conference pro Football Focus had him rank the number one defensive lineman.
So he's a disruptive player.
Tulane was fortunate to get him in the portal, and he's going to be a problem all year long.
So you're going to see teams start to change their offensive game plan.
When you disrupt offenses like this, like hoppers, doing offense is going to start to take notes and change their game plan and run away from you.
Yeah, it's and you and I have talked about it when you have one guy now at it starts changing schemes because this is when it's time for anybody else right to step up.
Hopper.
He's starting to prove himself and starting to establish himself.
And you mentioned a record that he had in a Sunbelt conference.
Now, if teams are going to put maybe two guys on their right, if I got two guys going to you now, I need to step up because you're taking the attention, which is what he can do.
Yeah.
And you know, when offenses do that, maybe sometimes your numbers hoppers and numbers may go down.
Sacks may go down.
But to your point it opens up the rest of the defense for everybody else.
And that's where somebody else has time to shine.
Maybe in the middle of the defense.
You're getting more pressure in the pass game.
Linebackers are being freed up because now two guys are being put on on one of the defensive linemen.
So he changes defensive line.
He changes offensive schemes.
Look at some big wins for Tulane.
Big win at home for the Cajuns and an overtime huge win for you on Monroe Louisiana Tech on the road.
That's great.
Some of the other teams that had their struggles, most of the teams are getting by weeks now.
So it's time to start fine tuning some things before you get into the meat of the schedule in October.
But that won't be back.
We're not taking a bye week.
We'll be back, talk about the teams in action, and we'll focus on some of the headlines next week when we get to see you there.
It's been a fun month of September so far for Scott.
Charlie, I'm Victor Hall.
We'll see you in October for more football here.
