I'm here at Prairie Public to play some of my originals.
They have some folksy, indy, blusey, jazzy, pop-- I go all over the place, but I'm here to play some original music for you guys.
I got started in music in a praise and worship band.
My dad was a pastor.
When I was about 3 years old, he sat me down on the drum-set and said, hit this one, then hit this one; Don't do anything else.
The drums were very short-lived for me.
I don't have all the coordination for that, so I gave up on music for a little bit.
Then when I was about 12 or so, I started playing piano and started picking up guitar, and was playing in those bands with my dad.
That was a great experience to get to practice 2 times a week and practice with other people, play music with other people, then have a show every week as well-- that was great!
That led to me playing music in my bedroom, starting to write songs.
As far as inspirations go, vocally, definitely David Gates from Bread and James Taylor.
They just both have timeless voices.
Now they're old farts, but they're still out there singin' as beautiful as they were back in the '70s.
As far as writing goes, I look a lot at Paul Simon and Bob Dylan, just in their wit in their lyrics.
I really am inspired by that.
And as far as creativity goes, I lean heavily into Paul McCartney because he just has such a freedom, such a whimsical type of style when it comes to writing songs.
He's not afraid to break norms going several different places, so I definitely take a lot of inspiration from those gentlemen.
