(uplifting music) - May is Preservation Month, and Preservation Utah is holding a Historic Homes Tour in the City Creek Canyon District.
And here with all the important details, Executive Director Brandy Strand.
Hi Brandy.
Thanks for being here.
I always love these home tours and am amazed people let you into their homes.
(laughs) - It's quite the trust that they put in us, and they do open up their privately owned homes for the public to come in and tour their historic properties.
We've been doing this for over 50 years.
- Yeah, I know.
And now you're back in City Creek in that district.
So, what are some of the homes people might see?
What stands out?
- What's unique about the City Creek neighborhood and the historic district is that you're gonna see the cottage style home.
So you're gonna see small homes handcrafted that have been there for generations, and you'll be able to see it right outside of Memory Grove Park.
So we also have that canyon backdrop that's also been built over time with the city and the community.
- Yeah, and there's also the fireman's hall.
Isn't that on that street?
- Yes, Ottinger Hall is right there on North Canyon Road.
Actually, we're going to be opening up that building in April of next year for public tours.
- Okay, okay, and then how many homes would you guess are on this tour this time?
- We're gonna have anywhere from six to seven individual homes that people will be able to go and tour throughout the day.
- Okay, it's great fun to do it.
And I kind of wanna ask you what some of your favorite historical spots are in the city?
- Oh, I would love to share that.
So, my absolute favorite is the old Mill in Cottonwood Heights.
It's been there for, oh my gosh, I can't even remember the year that it was built, but it was also, it was the paper mill for a little while, and then it turned into an open air concert venue for a little while.
And right now it's vacant, but my goal and hope is that we're gonna see that building come back to life.
- Great, great.
And just briefly, I know you're coming up.
You've just released the 2024 most endangered list, so people should be on the lookout for that.
- Absolutely.
Preservation throughout our state right now is something that's of the utmost importance, and please do go check out that list.
We have spaces from all over Utah highlighted.
- [Mary] Okay, great.
Well, thank you for being here.
Thanks.
- [Brandy] Thank you.
