Thousands of North Carolinians are stuck in jail not because they’ve been convicted of a crime, but simply because they cannot afford to pay bail. Many argue our current pretrial system does little to keep our communities safe and it places a burden on taxpayers. To create a better process, Haywood and Jackson counties have launched the state’s first ever pretrial release program.
