- No, sir, I was born in Oakland, California.

Good while?
- Pretty good while.
I went to grammar school and then high school and then to college in Tuscaloosa.
So I've been around a while.
My dad was a police officer there for 35 years.
- In Oakland?
- In Tuscaloosa, yes, sir.

Well, I might have met your dad.
- You probably have.
- In unfortunate circumstances.
- I hope not.
- I wish I had known you then.

And of course, Side the Family Stone and all of those people, MC Hammer, all those people outta Oakland.

- Holt High School.

- We went to, oh, that's out there with Reverend Crew, Reverend Sylvester Crew.

- Okay 'cause I went to school with Sylvester Yeah, that's a wonderful family.
He's still doing well there at Tuscaloosa.

- And you got a chance to walk across the stage and graduate.

- Now the thing about it is I got saved the last six weeks.

- How long have you been the praise?
- Seven years.
- Seven years, are you originally from this area?
- Yes, I grew up in Sylacauga.
- Okay, what high school did you go to?
- Sylacauga High School.
- All right.
What year did you graduate?
- '91.
- '91.
I have a son who went to school over there.
His name was Ken Cook and Ken was in music over there too.
So gospel singing.
He transitioned, got his wings about 12, about 12 years ago I think now.
So y'all got a lot of wonderful people at that school.
Tell me, as a praise and worship leader, if you could tell us quickly, what are you trying to accomplish and what would you encourage the praise and worship leaders who are watching you?
'Cause it seems like you got a good handle on it in terms of being successful in setting the atmosphere.
- Try to balance, you know, the old, the new, work with Matt, our pastor.
We try to coordinate what we're doing.
And at the end of the day, it's all about praising God.
- I got you.
Now what is one thing you would say don't do to praise and worship leaders?
- Don't be somebody you're not.
- Wow.
You can't put it any more powerful to the point, bullseye, than that.
Be who you are, don't be somebody that you're not.

- I know when you were thinking maybe a year or so ago and we were talking about projecting, you never thought that you'd have someone to come in and say, we're gonna take what you're doing around the world, but here we are.

how long you've been here?
- Well, we came here from Chilton County about a year ago.
And First Baptist family here invited us to worship and then God got into the leading, and I retired from my full-time job last week.
So I'm now full-time pastor here.
- Just last week?
- Just last week after 30 years, so.
- Wow.
You know, I have to look at things, how they work.
Now you retired last week and how long had you been at that job?
- 30 years.
- What were you doing?
- I worked for Alabama Department of Mental Health.
- Okay and then when you made that decision, then the man above said, boom, bam.
- It's time, that's right, that's right.
- Great, so now you're married.
- Yes, sir, yes, sir.
26 years.
- 26 years.
Turn around a little bit.

We love the side of your face, but the front of your face is just awesome.
- Okay.
- 26 years and your wife's name?
- My wife's name is Ginger.
- Ms. Ginger and you have children?
- I do, I have two children.
I have a daughter that's still at home.
I told her she could stay till she's 40.

And I have a son playing college basketball up in Iowa.
So he's in Iowa today.

Tell me the mission of the church here at First Baptist, Childersburg.
- Well, first of all, we wanna reach our city for Jesus.
We talk about downtown.
Downtown belongs to First Baptist Church.

- We need to reach everyone in this city and we need to go out from these walls.

Go all out to Judea and uppermost.
- That's right, that's right.
- Uppermost part.

- They are excited.
