WE VISITED HER IN HER HOME STUDIO TO FIND OUT MORE ABOUT HOW SHE CREATES THESE COLORFUL PIECES OF HISTORY.

THESE ARE THE PEOPLE THAT I LOVE AND THAT LOVE ME.
MY ART IS IN HONOR OF MY ANCESTORS.
INSPIRATIONS FROM GOD DESIGNED BY THE ANCESTORS.
SO GOD INSPIRES ME, THE ANCESTORS GIVE ME THE IDEAS IN TERMS OF WHAT STORIES THEY WANT ME TO TELL.
I HAVE ONE OF THOSE ACCORDION FRAMES AND THEY ARE RIGHT THERE IN MY STUDIO.
SO WHEN I GO IN MY STUDIO, ONE OF THE FIRST THINGS I DO, I WILL PRAY, YOU KNOW, AND THEN I WILL WALK AROUND.
I'M LIKE, OKAY, ANCESTORS, YOU KNOW, I NEED Y'ALL TO TELL ME WHO AM I SUPPOSED TO BE TALKING ABOUT?
I AM THE EMBODIMENT OF WHO THEY WERE, WHO THEY WANTED TO BE.
SO WE'RE LOOKING AT DURING THAT TIME WHEN BLACK PEOPLE HAD LAND, A LOT OF THE SLAVE OWNERS WHO LANDS WERE CONFISCATED BY THE UNION WERE GIVEN TO THE BLACK FOLKS, THAT PERIOD, AND SHORTLY THEREAFTER THAT WHEN THEY STARTED RETURNING EVERYTHING BACK.
SO THOSE ARE THE TIME PERIODS FOR ME.
MY ART, I CALL THEM SLINKIES.
THEY HAVE VERY LONG SKINNY ELONGATED NECKS.
IT'S -- FOR ME IT'S THE REGALNESS, YOU KNOW, THEY'RE UP, THEY'RE PROUD, THEY'RE WILLOWY, WHICH MEANS THEY CAN MOVE.
MY PIECES TALK TO YOU.
THEY DON'T HAVE FACES, AND BECAUSE THEY DON'T HAVE FACES, HOWEVER I DRESS THEM GIVES YOU THE PERSONA OF WHO THEY ARE.
WITHOUT FACES I HAVE TO MAKE THEM MOVE, SO THEIR ARMS MAY NOT MOVE, BUT YOU'VE GOT THE LOUD COLORS, YOU KNOW, YOU'VE GOT THE POSITION OF THE ARM, SOMEONE IS HOLDING A PURSE, SOMEONE MIGHT BE HOLDING A FISHING POLE, BUT THERE'S -- IN ALL OF MY PIECES THERE'S SOME FORM OF MOVEMENT.

I'M PROUD OF THE FACT THAT THEY WERE ABLE TO TAKE NOTHING AND MAKE IT INTO SOMETHING.
THEY TAKE THE SCRAPS OF THE PIG, YOU KNOW, AND MAKE THE MOST BEAUTIFUL, TASTY, YUMMY, UM, UM, UM, MAKE YOU WANT TO SMACK YOUR MAMA FOOD.
YOU KNOW, THAT IS JUST A GIFT.

YOU KNOW, GENERALLY I'M PLAYING SOME REALLY NICE JAZZ UP IN HERE OR SOME -- OOPS -- SOME NICE AFRICAN MUSIC, OR SOME OLD SCHOOL, LIKE THELONIOUS.

SHE WAS ALSO THE ROOT WOMAN.
YOU KNOW, SO WHEN A CHILD HAD TO BE BIRTHED, SHE BIRTHED THEM.
WHEN SOMEONE WAS SICK, SHE HAD HER MEDICINES IN HER SACK.
AND SHE WAS AN OLD WOMAN, SO SHE HAD TO WALK WITH THAT CANE.
SO SHE'S -- THERE'S JUST A SIMPLICITY ABOUT HER.
HER CANE AND HER BAG.
SO SHE'S THE WOMAN THAT'S CONSTANTLY WALKING, YOU KNOW, TO WHEREVER IT IS SHE NEEDS TO GO WHEN SHE COULDN'T GET A RIDE.
THIS PIECE HERE IS IN HONOR OF OSCAR MICHEAUX WHO WAS THE BLACK FILM DIRECTOR.

HE IS THE CREATOR OF BURNED WOOD PRINTS.
WITH WOOD AS HIS CANVAS HE USES FIRE, WATER, ELECTRICITY AND INK TO RENDER A UNIQUE PIECE OF ART.
HERE IS THE STORY.
♪♪ >> I WOULD DESCRIBE MY WORK AS TAKING A PIECE OF WOOD WITH THE NATURAL WOOD GRAIN, THE NATURAL FEEL, THE SMELL OF THE WOOD, AND BURNING IT WITH FIRE.
THEN TAKING IMAGERY AND APPLYING IT RIGHT OVER THE TOP OF THE WOOD, LIKE PAINTING ON TO A WOODEN CANVAS.
MY NAME IS BEN RODGERS AND I CREATE BURNED WOOD PRINTS.
I WILL CHOOSE MAPLE PLYWOOD BECAUSE IT'S VERY STRONG AND IT'S VERY FLAT AND TAKE THAT PIECE, CUT IT DOWN IN MY WORKSHOP, AND THEN I WILL ROUTER THE EDGES AND THEN I WILL FLAME THE EDGES, SO I TAKE A TORCH AND ACTUALLY BURN AROUND THE PIECE, AND THEN I WILL TAKE A BIT OF WATER AND BAKING SODA SOLUTION AND SPREAD THAT OVER THE TOP TO HELP THE ELECTRICITY CONDUCT, AND IT ALSO HELPS IT STAY ON THE SURFACE OF THE WOOD RATHER THAN GOING THROUGH THE MIDDLE.
THE NEXT STAGE IS TO BURN IT WITH ELECTRICITY.
THE PROCESS OF ELECTROCUTING THE WOOD IS PRETTY AMAZING.
SO I HAVE A MACHINE THAT I CREATED IN MY WORKSHOP AND I WILL TAKE THAT AND RUN AN ELECTRIC CURRENT THROUGH THE WOOD, WHICH TRAVELS ALONG THE SURFACE OF THE WOOD, BURNING NATURAL SHAPES INTO IT.
PEOPLE CALL IT FRACTALS AND TREE LIMBS OR LIGHTNING, ALL REMINISCENT OF WHAT THESE BURN MARKS IN THE WOOD LOOK LIKE.
NO TWO ARE ALIKE ON THOSE FRACTAL SHAPES, THEY'RE TOTALLY UNIQUE JUST LIKE NATURE, JUST LIKE A TREE BRANCH OR LIGHTNING, THEY CAN NEVER BE REPRODUCED.
SAND EVERYTHING DOWN SO IT'S NICE AND SMOOTH AND LOOKS REALLY CRISP, AND THEN RUN IT THROUGH A BIG FLATBED PRINTER AND THAT PUTS INK DIRECTLY ON TO THE WOOD, CREATING THE IMAGERY THAT IS THE FINAL PIECE.
DURING THE PRINTING PROCESS I WILL TAKE AN IMAGE INTO PHOTOSHOP AND I WILL TAKE A PHOTOGRAPH OF THE WOOD AND OVERLAY IT IN PHOTOSHOP SO THAT I CAN SEE THAT TAN CANVAS.
BECAUSE BASICALLY I'M STARTING WITH WOOD INSTEAD OF WHITE, LIKE YOU WOULD ON PAPER.
IN RECENT YEARS WHAT'S ALSO HELPED IS A PRINTER THAT HAS THE CAPABILITY TO LAY DOWN WHITE INK, AND SO AS THE PRINTS MOVE THROUGH, A LAYER OF WHITE GOES DOWN FIRST BEFORE THE COLOR IS APPLIED OVER THE TOP, AND THIS ALLOWS THE COLORS TO REALLY EXPLODE ON THE WOOD CANVAS.
GROWING UP IN LAKE TAHOE I'VE GOT A TON OF TAHOE IMAGERY AND I USE A COMBINATION OF MY OWN IMAGERY, BUT A LOT OF STOCK IMAGERY.
A LOT OF TREES, BEARS, TAHOE MOUNTAINS AND CHAIR LIFTS, SKI RESORTS, STUFF LIKE THAT.
I LOVE CREATING CUSTOM ONES.
PEOPLE LOVE TO HAVE THEIR OWN UNIQUE PICTURE, YOU KNOW, THAT FAMILY PHOTO AND HAVE IT IN A UNIQUE CANVAS THAT I CAN CREATE.
ONE THING THAT STANDS OUT THAT SURPRISES PEOPLE IS WHEN THEY PICK UP A PIECE OF MY ART, OFTENTIMES THEY WILL SMELL IT, AND IT SMELLS LIKE BURNED WOOD.
IT SMELLS LIKE IF THEY'VE EVER BEEN IN TAHOE IN THE WINTERTIME AND THEY HAVE HAD A FIRE IN THE FIREPLACE, IT SMELLS LIKE HOME OR IT SMELLS, YOU KNOW, LIKE A CAMPFIRE FROM THEIR CHILDHOOD OR SOMETHING.
SO THAT'S KIND OF A UNIQUE SIDE EFFECT.
MY FAVORITE PART OF THE WHOLE PROCESS IS GIVING PIECES TO PEOPLE AND WATCHING THEIR EYES LIGHT UP WHEN YOU SHOW THEM -- YOU HOLD IT UP AND THEY GO, WOW.
THE UNIQUENESS OF THE ART DRIVES ME AND I GET POSITIVE REACTIONS WHEREVER I GO AND IT REALLY FUELS MY DESIRE TO KEEP GOING AND ALL THE POSITIVITY THAT SURROUNDS IT.

JAYCE REALLY JUST CAME ABOUT FROM JUST BEING CREATIVE AND WANTING TO FIND SOMETHING THAT IS KIND OF ALWAYS DEFYING THE ODDS.

WHAT OTHER CHARACTER CAN YOU USE THAT CAN BE THE STAPLE OF BELIEVING IN YOURSELF?
SO THE WHOLE DEVELOPMENT PROCESS ABOUT JAYCE CAME ABOUT WITH JUST GOING BACK TO MY SKETCHING, R&D, THINGS OF THAT NATURE, BECAUSE I WANTED TO CREATE SOMETHING SPECIAL THAT WE CAN ALL CONNECT TO THAT WAS FUN AND THAT COULD JUST TOUCH PEOPLE IN A DIFFERENT WAY.

USUALLY WHEN PEOPLE SEE IT THEY KNOW IT'S A CALVIN REYNOLDS ORIGINAL, WHICH I LOVE, BECAUSE HE REALLY HAS SUCH A DYNAMIC AND UNIQUE STYLE.
HIS ILLUSTRATIONS LITERALLY JUMP OFF THE PAGES AND THAT'S WHAT I LOVE THE MOST ABOUT IT, IS THAT IT'S SO LIFELIKE AND PEOPLE CAN SEE THEMSELVES IN THE CHARACTERS.

START HERE WHEREVER IT IS THAT YOU ARE, THIRD GRADE, FOURTH GRADE, FIFTH GRADE, START RIGHT THERE AND JUST KNOW THAT WHATEVER YOU'RE DOING, IF YOU HAVE THAT BIG DREAM, YOU CAN GET THERE.
SO THAT WAS ALSO REALLY COOL THAT HE WAS ABLE TO SHARE WITH THEM LIKE THIS IS MY ACTUAL FIFTH GRADE STUFF.
THIS IS THE SAME AGE AS YOU ALL ARE.
>> SO YOU CAN SEE MY LOVE OF COMIC BOOKS, SATURDAY MORNING CARTOONS.
IT WAS JUST A GOOD WAY TO STAY CREATIVE.
WELL, FOR ME IT STARTED WHEN I WAS LIKE IN THIRD GRADE AND I WOULD JUST DRAW AND IT GOT TO A POINT WHERE I WANTED TO JUST CREATE MY OWN STORIES AND MY OWN COMIC BOOK CHARACTERS AND THEN WHEN I WAS IN HIGH SCHOOL I HAD THIS CARTOON CHARACTER THAT I CREATED CALLED THE RED NINJA.
IT WAS MY ART TEACHER, MRS. BORING, WHO TOOK ME ON A COLLEGE TRIP TO SARASOTA, THE RINGLING COLLEGE OF ART AND DESIGN, AND THAT CHANGED MY LIFE.
WHEN I WENT TO VISIT THAT SCHOOL I JUST HAD THAT FEELING LIKE THIS IS WHERE I WANTED TO BE.
IT WAS MY GUIDANCE COUNSELOR AND MY PARENTS' SUPPORT, I ENDED UP GETTING ACCEPTED INTO RINGLING AND THAT WAS WHERE THE JOURNEY STARTED.
I HAD THIS LOVE FOR SPORTS I WAS ON THE HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL TEAM AND I WANTED TO TRY TO FIND A WAY TO COMBINE SPORTS WITH ARTS AND FASHION.
I WAS FORTUNATE ENOUGH TO LAND A JOB OVER IN BRADENTON ILLUSTRATING FAMOUS ATHLETES SUCH AS KOBE BRYANT.
A LOT OF THOSE GREAT ATHLETES FROM THE LATE '90s, 2000 ERA.
BUT, YOU KNOW, AFTER 25 YEARS OF DOING ANYTHING, YOU KIND OF WANT TO TRY TO FIND OTHER ASPECTS OF ART SO I WANTED TO CREATE SOMETHING THAT I FELT LIKE COULD RESONATE WITH EVERYONE.
CHILDREN'S BOOKS ARE THE CORNERSTONE TO LITERATURE AND SO I THINK WHEN I GO INTO THESE SCHOOLS AND THEY GET A CHANCE TO SEE ME AND I CAN CONNECT WITH THESE KIDS AND THEY SEE THE ART AND I GET A CHANCE TO SHOW THEM BOOKS THAT I CREATED WHEN I WAS IN ELEMENTARY SCHOOL, MIDDLE SCHOOL, I GET A CHANCE TO SHOW THEM PROJECTS THAT I WORKED ON WHEN I WAS IN HIGH SCHOOL, THEY GET A CHANCE TO SEE THE JOURNEY OF WHAT IT LOOKS LIKE TO BELIEVE IN YOURSELF AND TO HAVE A CRAFT AND WORK AT IT AND THEY GET A CHANCE TO SEE HOW YOU PROGRESSIVELY GET BETTER IF YOU DON'T GIVE UP.
AND SO THE TEACHERS LOVE THAT MESSAGE, IT'S A GREAT WAY TO CONNECT.
I GIVE MY PRESENTATION AND AFTERWARDS I WILL HAVE KIDS COME UP TO ME AND SAY HOW DID YOU DO THIS?
AND THEY ASK VERY INTERESTING QUESTIONS, THEY ARE ENGAGED.
SO I GUESS THEY SEE A LITTLE BIT OF ME IN THEM AND VICE VERSA.
>> I THINK LIKE CALVIN IS A GREAT ARTIST AND IT INSPIRED ME LIKE TO KEEP GOING WITH MY ART, TOO.
>> WELL, HE SAID TO LIKE ALWAYS FOLLOW YOUR DREAMS, SO NEVER STOP UNTIL YOU GET WHAT YOU WENT FOR.
>> I USED TO DRAW LIKE STICK MEN AND I WISH I CAN BE LIKE AN ARTIST AND MAKE MY OWN COMPANY.

>> I WAS IN THE FIFTH GRADE, THAT LOVE -- >> CALVIN HAS JUST BEEN AMAZING TO COME OUT HERE AND BE SUCH AN APPROACHABLE VOICE.
OUR KIDS MANY TIMES DON'T FEEL LIKE THEY ARE REPRESENTED AND HE IS THE PERSON THAT LOOKS LIKE THEM, THAT ACTS LIKE THEM, THAT'S DOING WHAT THEY WANT TO DO.
SO HE'S ABLE TO SHOW THEM IF HE CAN DO IT, THEY CAN DO IT.
AND I JUST LOVE THAT POSITIVE MESSAGE BECAUSE OUR STUDENTS NEED AND DESERVE TO REALIZE THAT ANYTHING IS POSSIBLE.
>> THERE'S AN ART FORM TO WRITING CHILDREN'S BOOKS.
YOU CAN'T WRITE THAT MANY WORDS, YOU CAN'T HAVE THAT MANY WORDS, SO IT WAS A PROCESS OF LEARNING HOW TO SAY MORE WITH LESS.
AND THAT'S POWERFUL.
>> HE'S TRULY A DYNAMIC VOICE, HE IS A DYNAMIC ILLUSTRATOR AND REALLY KNOWS HOW TO TOUCH THE HEARTS OF CHILDREN.
>> I WANTED JAYCE TO INJECT POSITIVITY INTO THE WORLD.
LIKE I WANTED IT TO BE MORE OF A THIS IS MY LEGACY AND THIS IS MY WAY OF MAKING THE WORLD A BETTER PLACE.
