Ian All right.
That was the last question of round one.
And we have a good game going here.
Do we have any challenges?
A better asset first?
No challenges.
All right.
So here at the end of our first round, Conway is leaving the game by Shaw.
100 to 30 and we're ready for our second round unless we have substitutions and we do have substitutions.
So we'll take a short break while we make some substitutions for these teams.
Welcome back to our 78 State Quiz Bowl Championship for 2017.
And during our break that we had Conway made some substitutions Matt is in the game for Conway and Harrison is in the game and maybe I should explain that Jack doesn't normally wear makeup and bright clothing every day of his life but he's in a play tonight at Conway High School called Mary Poppins.
Right and I think you have some other cast members with you but he's up here today competing in Quiz Bowl.
So Jack, it's good to have you.
All right.
We're going to begin our second round of play.
So, Jill, you're the captain for Cabot and Zelda, the captain for Conway.
We may need both of you as we have bonus questions in this round.
So good luck to both teams.
First, you have to get a toss up.
Right?
And here is a chance to do that.
What literary fairy tale retold by Charles Parol tells the story of a cat that uses trickery and deceit.
Zelda, Puss in Boots.
Puss in Boots was what we were looking for.
And you've earned your team a bonus called brain function.
Brain function.
That's appropriate for quiz bowl, isn't it?
Identify the parts of the human brain being described, controls, balance and voluntary movement.
Cerebellum.
Yes, the largest portion of the brain responsible for most of the brain function.
Cerebrum, cerebral cortex and cerebrum.

Hypothalamus.

Hypothalamus, yes.
And the fourth one is maintains vital body functions, including heart rate and breathing.
But that B medulla pons.
And answer, please.
Medulla.
Yes.
Or you could have added oblongata with it.
All right.
Now that is a total of four, right?
And you got five points for each one of those.
So the whole thing was worth 30 more points for you.
Good job, Conway.
All right.
Cabot and Conway, let's get ready now for the second toss up to try to get the bonus.
Adolf Hitler never allowed her to be seen in public.
Zelda.
Eva Braun.
Yes.
All right.
And you've ordered you've gotten the bonus called presidential succession.
And Zelda, this is going to be one of those four questions in 20 seconds.
That she it's going to be all be one question.
And it says, Most of us know that the vice president's speaker of the House are next in line to succeed the president of the United States.
After the vice president speaker of the House.
I need you to name the next four in order starting the 22nd clock.
President pro tempore the state secretary of state truly secretary of treasury and then war.
Or we don't have war defense.
Defense right so pro tem.
State treasury defense.
OK the president pro tempore of the Senate, the secretary of state, the secretary of the Treasury and then the secretary of Defense.
Those are all correct.
And all in order.
Good job.
OK, so 30 more points added to the score for Conway.
Now we've got two bonuses remaining and here's a toss up for both schools.
What is what name is given to the science concerned with the structure and function of bones?
Zelda archeology.
You're right.
All right.
That bonus that you've earned is called currency.
Currency when given a denomination of U.S. currency.
And without getting your wallets out, tell what object is depicted on the reverse side.
OK, a $5 bill.
Lincoln Lincoln Memorial.
Yes, a $100 bill.
OK, it's got Franklin on it.
So I'm going to say Independence Hall.
Independence Hall.
You're right.
It's not.
$50 bill.
Grant.
So maybe a bond with squirrels.
I've met courthouse.
No, shucks.
A $20 bill.
OK, that's Jackson.
So White House.
The White House.
The White House was right.
The only one you didn't know is the $50 bill.
And that's the US Capitol Building.
All right.
But three out of the four.
So 25 points added to your score.
One bonus for reminding teams and let's see which school school can get it with this toss up question, this man was unwavering in his determination to transform Iran into theocratic Ali ruled Zelda Khomeini.
You're right.
All right.
Your bonus is called bodies of water.
Identify the body of water that the following rivers flow into the Congo River flows into this ocean.
Oh, do I go with it?
My Atlantic?
Yes.
The Euphrates flows into this gulf.
Persian?
The Persian Gulf?
Yes, the po river flows into this sea is in the Mediterranean Sea.
No, not.
And the my mama Putra River flows into this city.
Indian Ocean.
Pardon me?
Into this may.
Be the Bay of Bengal.
Yes.
And the only one you miss.
The Po River flows into the Adriatic.
The Adriatic Sea.
All right.
But three out of the four for 25 points and the end of round two.
All right, let's see.
At the end of that round, we have Conway leading the game to ten to 30.
So, Cabot, that means that you have a chance to make up a lot of ground here by getting the first pick of our three lightning rounds.
We're going to ask each team to answer as many of ten questions as they can in one minute time.
And Cabot gets to pick first from these categories.
You might choose Shakespeare short quotes.
Identify the play in which the following Shakespearean quotes appear are you might choose Category two, which is invertebrate phyla.
When given an invertebrate, identify the phyla to which it belongs are you may prefer category number three.
British monarch when given the name of a British monarch, give the name of his or her Royal House teams.
You have one minute to make your decision.
Well, here in our final match, we have quite a difference between.
We try to score.
We've seen all day.
And I think part of it is last year, just as Conaway Christian had lost by five, Conway lost by five, Zelda was on that team and she began to really show what she could do this year.
They've moved her to the captain's position and she's just an outstanding.
She is outstanding.
She has lots of knowledge across the spectrum.
It's not.
Just.
Focused on one.
Now, let's turn to Cabot for just a minute.
Cabbage going to have the opportunity to take a 62nd round.
There was a couple of those that I heard.
Cabbage got a lot of knowledge there, just a little slow on the buzzer.
And right now that's like they're overwhelmed.
The coach is going to have to talk to them, tell them to trust their selves, you know, trust the knowledge they've got, pick a 62nd round and get back into this game.
It's not over by a long shot.
We've got a lot of points out there and they can do.
This when as we saw the first half of the day, that 62nd round turned things around.
It did not do as much though this past game with Carter High School, even though they were brilliant in the 62nd round it didn't necessarily change the momentum.
So what do you do if you were able to nail that what must you do after.
If you can get the 62nd round to just click for you.
It not only helps your score but it helps your morale going into that last quarter and that's what's going to have to happen to cap cabinet right now.
They're going to have to get some confidence in getting this thing rolling and they can do it.
I mean, there's no reason in the world for them not to do it.
There are plenty sharp enough.
Don't let this score bother you.
Don't even look at the score.
Play the game.
Play the game.
As you mentioned earlier, you can see sometimes the changes in body language.
Yes.
When the points are not what teams would like.
Exactly.
Right.
And if I ever caught a student turn around looking at the score, I'd usually chastise them later.
I just play the game.
Play the game.
It's the questions.
Let them come to you.
You can get out of this.
All right.
Let's see what happens next.
Back over to our quizmaster, Steve Patterson.
We are glad to have you back with us as we are continuing our seven day state championship game for quiz bowl 2017 and it's a great game between two teams Kevin got to pick first during the break and they chose the category of invertebrate phyla and Conway chose from the other two categories chose British monarchs all right and so we're going to have Cabot go first I've got a minute on the clock here and Zelda you and your team be ready for any bounceback they may give you Stargell when you're ready to give an answer speak clearly loudly to me and we'll know that that's your answer ok when given an invertebrate identify of the phyla to which it belongs.

All right.
Sometimes you just go with your gut on those things.
All right.
OK, so you picked up 30 more points here, and now we're going to go to Conway's category.
So Jill you and your team be ready for bounce backs over here.
Zelda it says, When given the name of a British monarch, give the name of his or her Royal House are we ready?
All right, here we go.

And it is I need you to name the British house that this person belongs to.
It is Edward the Fifth Plantagenet?
No, he's a member of the House of York.
York.
All right.
That takes us out of round three.
Now, doesn't it?
And so Conway leaving the game still by a score of 330 to 100.
And let's see if we have any substitutions we want to make.
We do want to make substitutions.
So we'll take a short break while we change the set up we'll go back to the 78 state championship game for Quiz Bowl 2017.
And during the break we made some changes Jack is back but in another position here for us down here and Megan is in and Megan good luck in the play you did a great job, Hunter.
Glad to have you back in the game.
So we're ready to go now with Conway's changes habits.
You've stayed the same.
I believe so.
Here's our last round.
200 points up for grabs with these 20 toss up questions.
Good luck to both teams.

Cabot You are the first runner up for 78 Quiz Bowl and Conway you are the seventh eighth State Quiz Bowl champions.
Congratulations.
Conway back this year after that disappointing loss last year.
While they are the winners of the 78 division, that was determination.
You know we don't want to leave this is the last game without thinking eight and for doing this without a tea and support quiz bowl would not be near what it is now I had one educator today make the statement that when the students in elementary saw the high school students on television, it just set them on fire and they wanted to then play quiz bowl.
And that's really where it gets started.
You get bit when you're a little young, you know, and you start studying.
And these students spent an enormous amount of time outside of the classroom, adding to their knowledge they use computers, they read.
Reading is probably the most important thing for them to learn to do.
And that's where they gain.
A lot of their knowledge.
Base is impressive.
Oh, it's unbelievable.
Yes.
Well, let's go over now to the set for Debbie Adams and Kelly Hope to award the trophy and the check.

That's our seven all tournament team Carolyn, thank you so much.
We cannot forget the effort that parents make to support their children, to provide them with a better education, a better future, and here is how Quiz Bowl plays a big role in it.
I consider myself a father and a husband working hard to provide for my family.
I enjoy spending time with them and in different activities and enjoy working with my extended family.
And the business that we own together.
I'm competitive, hard working, try to be a good husband, good father.
My wife and I both work.
We both own small businesses, so we work hard.
But we have a pretty what I would call a normal family dynamic.
In our family.
Family consists of me.
My wife, we have three sons.
My oldest is Hagan.
The middle son is Davis.
Hagan is 16.
Davis is 13.
My youngest is Thomas, who is nine.
Hagan who has been involved in Quiz Bowl since fifth grade.
He is.
He's quiet, somewhat shy, although some would probably disagree with that.
But he he is he's very studious and he's very hardworking.
Will is he's a neat kid.
He's infinitely curious loves to learn, loves to laugh, some really good big brother and just a just an infinitely curious person, very scientific.
The world to him is black and white.
Not a lot of gray Quiz Bowl is is a wonderful sport to watch.
Um, you know you've got ten kids, five on each team and it's just amazing to watch them compete and it's most amazing to to just see what all they know there's some these kids are so smart and they think so quickly and it's just a lot of fun to watch them to watch them answer those questions and to see how fast they get the questions.
And, you know, it's just amazing to see how smart these kids are.
Quiz Bowl has helped my son to be more competitive, increase his teamwork ability and increase his thirst knowledge quiz bowl has given will a great deal more self-confidence poise.
It's made him look forward to competing into public speaking.
It's just given him a confidence not just in his day to day life.
I love the way Quiz Bowl is structured and the the the the depth of knowledge that it that it requires to to be involved in that in Arkansas.
You know, we're not known for leading any sort of educational stat or endeavor or anything like that.
But I get the impression that with Quiz Bowl, Arkansas does it about as well as anybody does it in the organization.
The the Governors Quiz Bowl associate nation and the way they put on the tournaments and the all star tournaments in the invitational.
It's very well organized.
It's it's impressive to watch.
And it you know, it brings together these really bright kids and allows them to compete with each other and get to know each other.
And it's it's very impressive.
I mean, I think it's something that Arkansas can really be proud of.
It's been a great benefit to our family.
And in giving instilling the the leadership and and knowledge for Reagan and for my other kids as well.
And what and what he does, he's let's give them confidence and doing that.
And it's it's promoted leadership and in his in his life I would just like to thank you for your work in in promoting this activity.
This sport that that that these kids participate in and in your work in in establishing the criteria, establishing the the questions, the, the competitions.
And it's great when when the kids from your small town can can go out and compete and maybe figure out that they're a smarter, smarter than anybody else in the state.
I think it gives those kids from the really small schools, you know, a chance to to be confident and and and excel in something other than athletics because every every town's got athletics.
I think it's a great great activity for them to participate in the quiz bowl doesn't care if you're 66 and athletic or if you're you know, a runt and you're five feet tall.
It's all about, you know, what's between your ears and how fast you can buzz in.
