You've been a close watcher of quizbowl for a long time, so knowing what you know, what can we expect from these two teams tonight?
I'm sure that they'll both do well.
Subiaco has been here several times and they have a lot of experience, but Berryville also has a history of being in championship games for QUIZBOWL, so I think you're going to see a good match.
And I think that.
These players are probably ready to go absolutely, so let's get right to it.
Sounds like it will be a great match and very entertaining.
So it is that time.
Let's turn it over to our quizmaster, Steve Patterson, and find out who will be the four.
A state champion of Quizbowl 2022 Steve Round one.
Well, welcome teams for the 4A State Championship.
We have searched the land and found the most difficult questions we can find to see who will come out on top and who will be run around.
Both of you are in a very enviable position.
There are a lot of schools out there, including my own.
They would like to be sitting right where you are today, so good luck to both to both teams and we'll see what happens at the end of four.

To talk about the challenge.
OK, thank you Steve.
And boy you you kind of saw this one coming right away.
So what is your guess on what's happening with this challenge?
Well, my guess is that there was an answer given that.
The first answer wasn't right, but the student corrected himself and gave a second answer.
Unfortunately, you got to go with.
The first.
Is that right?
Yes, so I'm not sure that that's the challenge, sure, but I think that might be it.
With all your experience and knowledge and background, you've done this a timer too, and so that's kind of what we're guessing is happening.
And for those who just joined, it's the coaches that file.
This challenge.
Is that correct?
And then the judges make the decision.
Yes, the judges make the decision, but the.
Coach is the only one that can approach the judges to lodge a challenge, and so that limits it somewhat.
The students can help in the background by looking up things in books and things like that, but this is.
Probably going to be considered a procedural challenge rather than.
A knowledge sure answer that was given, so I think that the procedure is what's being challenged that makes sense.
That makes sense.
And so as we do this, every time we wait to see what the judges have decided, and it sounds like they have already made a decision.
So we are gonna go back to Steve and find out what that decision is, Steve.
Well, welcome back to Studio C Here at Arkansas PBS and we're in the midst of a challenge.
I don't know exactly what the challenge is, so the judges are looking at it and then the opposing coach has a chance to retaliate to that challenge and come up with their own material.
And that's what they're doing.
It's called a counter challenge here in quizbowl and so while we do that, we're going to take a short break.
This month on Arkansas PBS.

Oh, this is also where I'm going to meet my friends Max and Sophie and Jesse Jean and welcome back to the action.
Looks like we are ready to get the judges answer to the challenge.
It happened before the break.
Let's turn it back over to the quizmaster, Steve.
Hi welcome back.
We had a challenge by the Subiaco team over Ayers Rock and you initially said Mount airs.
And they said it has to say airs rock so.
Because the answer is rather obvious now Adam, we're going to give you a different bounce back question to give you a chance at the the 10 points and so let us do that right now.
And we're going to have to deduct 10 points from barryville, which we've done.
OK, alright, here's your toss up question.
Where is the Earth's torrid zone located?
Adam.
Near the equator, yes.
All right, so we'll give 10 points over to Subiaco for that correct answer.
All right?
Now we're ready for round two, and I believe we've made a substitution over here.
Nolan good to have you into the game.
And in these substitutions over here Adam.
Ohh we are going to make a substitution on Subiaco.
Let's see how quickly we can do this.
All right, we're ready to go over here on this side now, of course, round two is an exciting round because if your team gets the toss up crack, they get a chance at a bonus question.
And there are four bonus questions in the round, and once we use up those four, we move on to round three.
All right.

Welcome back, we are almost ready for round three, but first the teams need to pick their categories.
So let's go back to the quiz master for that, Steve.
Well, we are back for the third round, which is what we call the Lightning round.
I know our quiz bowl team members are quite well aware of it where we give them a minute on the clock and ask them to answer as many as 10 questions.
And if they can get all 10 right in that one minute they get a bonus of 20 points.
Well barryville, you get to pick first.
And your first choice is biology.
All of the following are one syllable terms from biology.
All right, that's your first choice choice.
#2 is literary couples give the other half of the following couples from literature, religion or mythology.
Alright, and then Civil War battles is the third category.
In what state did the following American Civil War battles take place?
Anyone have any questions over those categories?
All right, you have one minute to decide.
And we're going to bring in our resident expert Linda Smith for more on what these categories mean.
It's strategically.
How do they kind of choose what's best for them?
Well, they have to look at the category and say, do we have anybody on our team who can answer questions about Civil War battles?
And that one is a pretty narrow category, so it it has to be someone on your team who has studied that and likes that.
Then the other two.
Categories biology and literary couples.
If you have someone who's a specialist in literature, they might know the couples.
If you have someone who is really good with biology, maybe they've taken second year of Biology AP Biology.
They would probably be the ones to do that category and remember they get 10 questions in one minute, so it's got to be very fast that they're moving through these questions and we might see it in this round.
I don't know.
To help we would that the.
That one of these teams runs a category and gets that extra 20 points.
And that's a lot of pressure on the one person that may or may not know a lot about bad categories.
So alright, let's see how it all plays out.
Let's go back over to Steve.
There eville, what have you chosen?
Round 3?
Civil War battles.
Interesting.
Alright, so that's going to be barryville.
And then Subiaco, they've chosen Civil War battles.
Biology biology over here.
OK, let's subiaco.
All right, excellent.
Yes please.
I believe we've brought Moses back in and moved Nolan down and Bernie.
You've become the captain, awesome.
And here we've got Jeffrey, and Alan is back.
Awesome.
All right, we have chosen categories here.
Barryville has chosen Civil War battles to try to do the best that they can in that, and then there should be echo on their part.
Have chosen biology, one syllable terms from biology.
So we've got a minute we're going to put on the clock.
And ask you to answer these questions, Brody.
We'll start with you, Adam.
You'll be ready over here for any bounce backs.
Alright, in what state did the following American Civil War battles take place?
Are you ready?
OK, Bull run Virginia yes Gettysburg PA yes Fort Sumter SC yes Shiloh.

They have chosen to stall there on Corinth, which means that will not pass over.
That was the last of the 10 alright Adam.
They did a great job, but they did leave three out there for you to try to pick up all right.
The first one is Hampton Roads.
South Carolina, no.
The second one is Kennesaw Mountain.
Georgia yes, and the third is Fort Donaldson.
Mississippi that one is Tennessee.
Corinth was Mississippi and the other one that we didn't get right was Hampton Roads.
That's in Virginia, Virginia all right Bud.
A good job on Berryville part and on Sue's part picking up.
One or two of the bounce backs, but now Adam it is a subiaco's chance to do well on the Lightning round, and it says all of the following are one syllable terms from biology.
You ready?

Alright, good, but we can pass over to y'all for as well Brody, so you need me to explain the category OK?
The first one is a group of insects and a colony with a specific function.

That's the end of round three.
Do we have any challenges?
Then here then here.
OK, so at the end of three we have a great game going here subiaco's in the lead right now, 210 and barryville is at 1:40, so we're going to take a break at this point.
