And we are back!
Looks like there were no challenges.
So that means Batesville is still on top for now.
But let's get back over to the quizmaster for round two.
Well, thank you, Christina.
And, we had a bit of a break there to get some things, properly strained.
but here we are, back for round two, where if your team gets a toss up, you get a chance at bonus questions.
All right, so we're ready for round two.
Round two.
all right, here's the first toss.
by the way, we did have some folks come in.
Jackson, it's good to have you into the game.
And I think y'all kept everything the same.
Okay, it was part of the ancient Silk Road.
And it is a vital area between Central Asia and the Indian subcontinent.
He was also known as a major land chokepoint in military history.
Name.
This geographic feature bordering Pakistan.
Alexander, the Khyber Pass.
Yes.
And with that, you've earned your team a bonus.
And that bonus is called imagine.
Oh, nope, that's not the right one.
I apologize.
Famous athletes, given a professional sports athlete provide the primary position they played or played most, are most known for.
For example, if given Babe Ruth, you would say pitcher or outfielder.
All right.
Number one, Kobe Bryant, shooting guard.
Yes.
Wayne Gretzky positions.
Okay.
Yeah.
Okay.
Striker.
No.
Dick Butkus, linebacker.
Yes.
Cal Ripken, first baseman.
No.
All right.
You got, two of the four and the two we missed.
Wayne Gretzky is, the famous center for hockey.
And, for Cal Ripken.
He was a shortstop, shortstop.
All right, here's another toss up for both schools.
And it happens to be math competition.
All right, rewrite the quadratic equation y equals three times quantity x plus two quantity squared minus eight.
In standard form.
Alexander three x squared plus 12 x plus four.
Yes.
All right.
Now you've earned a bonus called Arkansas towns and major historical events and places are given a description of a historical event or place.
Provide the name of the event or place.
It is also the name of a town in Arkansas.
All right.
President Franklin Roosevelt died in this Georgia town.
Of Charleston hot Springs.
No.
Turkish, Turkey city.
I think it's Turkish and capital of the Silesia Empire.
242 63 BCE.
Let's go.
Istanbul.
No battle site in the Netherlands where Napoleon lost Waterloo.
Yes.
German city where treaty allows Catholicism or Lutheranism to be chosen.
It's Nantes.
No, that one is Hog's Burg.
President Roosevelt died in Warm Springs, not hot Springs.
And the Turkish city and capital of the Seleucid Empire was Antioch.
Antioch for Magnolia.
Okay.
Christina, let's go back to you.
Okay.
Thank you so much.
And I want to bring in our quiz bowl expert to talk a little bit about time outs and the strategy behind them.
What's allowed?
What's not sure about the strategy on this one, but, they do have the right to call a timeout.
And it may be that she's wanting to talk to her players.
They she may think that they're beginning to kind of just want, Magnolia, this is the bonus round.
You got to be on your toes as a coach, because if you challenge anything, it has to come right after the toss up.
But this is not a challenge.
This is a timeout.
It'll be 30s and then they'll go right back to play.
But, I'm kind of surprised about the timeout.
And you said this is the first appearance for Magnolia.
A yes, yes, this is the first time.
And there's something we need to emphasize here, because in the first game we had a state championship team get upset.
At least I would consider it an upset.
But Truman was awesome.
Yes.
And first time for them.
Yes.
And something else about this Magnolia team.
They are a young team.
I think there's only one senior on the team.
Maybe.
Maybe there's two.
But they've got a good squad that's intimidating.
And something else.
I'm noticing all of these teams that are showing up.
When I started in Quiz Bowl 40 some years ago, you got one coach.
That was it.
Oh, you know, one teacher took the whole squad.
Now I'm seeing three coaches, two coaches, four coaches.
I mean, there's a lot of individuals that are getting involved in this and that strengthens the teams because, you know, I just taught math.
So English was kind of a handicap for me.
And history might have been around it.
Yes.
Okay.
Wonderful.
Well, thank you for your insight.
And now that the timeout is over, we go back over the quizmaster.
Well welcome back.
And, we read two tossup questions out of the ten, and, let's see who can get this one correct.
There are three types of this substance that the pancreas and salivary salivary glands produce to change glucose into disaccharides and transcribes name this enzyme found in saliva that catalyzes the hydrolysis of starch into sugars that are common in foods such as rice and, birdie.
Glucagon.
Now, common in foods such as rice and potatoes.
No answer.
It's salivary amylase.
Amylase.
All right.
He was born David John Moore Cornwell.
Alexander.
John, look at your.
You're absolutely right.
Nice pronunciation as well.
All right.
So let's see y'all get imaginary islands of literature given a set of clues about an imaginary island in a piece of literature.
Provide the name of the island.
Shipwrecked man left on an island with mad scientist human hybrids from vivisection.
The Island of Doctor Moreau.
Yes.
Caribbean.
The buccaneers buried gold.
Long John Silver and Jim Hawkins.
Treasure Island.
Yes, Aldous Huxley novel.
Island Paradise of science and religion.
Animals speak.
Crome yellow.
No.
And Shakespeare.
Tropical island.
Marooned by a shipwreck.
Prospero and slaves.
The island owner.
The Tempest.
Yes, that's actually correct.
They don't have the right answer in here, but.
All right.
Okay.
the one that you missed was, Aldous Huxley's novel Island, where animals speak is called Pala la.
All right.
I'm moving on.
Are we challenging this story for you to read?
Moving on.
Okay, I understand the toss up for both schools and its math computation.
What is the decimal equivalent of the binary number 110110?
Alexander 54.
Wow.
That's right.
And very quick.
All right.
Ancient city and modern country.
Given the ancient or historically very old name of a city, provide the country that the city is in today.
Roz Shahi.
India.
That's close, but no Carthage.
Libya.
Libya, no.
Nineveh.
Israel.
no.
Torah.
Come.
No answer.
Well, we found something on to that.
All right.
Russia.
He is Pakistan.
Carthage is Tunisia.
Nineveh, is Iraq.
And, ter come is Switzerland.
All right.
Now, that's the last question for round two.
Do we have any challenges now?
We do have challenges.
So Christina I'm going to throw it back to you okay.
Thank you so much.
So Bill, we were talking a little bit about the timing of that challenge.
Had to be at the end of the round.
Yes.
Because in the bonus round you have to challenge the toss up at the time, the toss that was finished.
So you don't get to the bonus part.
But if you challenge one of the bonuses which each of those bonuses are worth five points apiece, if you challenge one of those, you wait until the end of the challenge at the end of the quarter, and then you challenge it then.
And Magnolia has challenged the last, well, the third toss up, the last bonus that's on there.
And I think they might be successful.
What do you think this is about?
Well it they were I can't remember exactly what it was that they were talking about.
But let's go back to this.
When you get a challenge, the coach, one of the coaches now, but one of the coaches has to approach the judges.
There's a five minute limit to the time.
So you don't hold the game up a lot.
And then they have to present written material, or they have to present something besides their opinion as to why I'm saying this challenge, this is wrong or right sometimes challenges.
There's two different pronunciations, sometimes there's two different answers.
And the moderator must go by what's in front of him, even though Steve may know.
Yes, there is another answer to this.
He can't react to that.
He has to go by what's in front of him and then the coach has to challenge it.
A lot of times coaches will use students that we never see.
They will be there.
I used to call them quizmaster, so they'd be ganged up around me and have books and laptops and first one thing and another to feed me information.
So that I can make the challenge.
And, that helps a lot, because teachers don't know everything they think we do, but we know they know a lot.
But this challenge has been resolved.
So to for more on exactly what happened and how it's been resolved, we're going to go back over to the quizmaster.
All right.
Welcome back.
We did have a challenge.
about the question.
Shakespeare's tropical island.
we had the answer.
Caliban, who, of course, is a slave on the island.
And, the truth of the matter is, there is no named island in the play.
So all the judges have decided is to give you the extra toss up.
Okay.
And here it is.
Odysseus visits on long journey home.
Nymphs Calypso, Searcy, low to Cedars.
Is Ithaca?
No.
Ithaca?
Yes.
Okay.
All right, so we'll add five points to, that score.
All right.
So that's going to move us to round three and the lightning round.
And Skyler your team will get to go first, and pick first as well.
And here are the categories you can choose.
You might choose vice presidents, given the name of a US president.
Provide the name of the vice president who served under him.
If there's more than one vice president, either will be correct.
All right.
You might choose official languages of countries given an official language or of our languages, and a continent or region provide the country where the language, languages are the official languages.
And you have your third category, which is called artworks, and they're artist given a famous work of art.
Name the artist of that work groups.
You have one minute to make your decision.
Christina.
Okay.
Thank you.
And we are going to take a quick break while the teams choose their categories for the lightning round.
But stay with us.
We'll be right back.
The state's best baseball and softball teams are back in Conway this summer as a Centennial Bank.
