♪ [Guitar plays softly] ♪ [light bulb surges] ♪ (violin plays energetically) ♪ My name is Quetzal Guerrero also known as Q-Violin.
I'm from Phoenix Arizona, born and raised but I have ancestry here in southern California.
My father's side, his ancestry is from the Juaneño Acjachemem Band of Mission Indians.
My mother is from Brazil.
She also has Indigenous roots from the Kambiwá Tribe from the Atlantic Coast.
I studied classical music for a long time, from the time I was about four years old to sixteen years old.
I was playing in youth symphonies, youth orchestras and learned a lot about the great European composers.
And all of those sounds and influences have really kind of geared my musical evolution in all sorts of different ways that I like to explore.
♪ [violin plays slowly] ♪ My parents both being musicians I listened to a whole ton of music.
I started singing shortly afterwards.
When I was in about junior high school I started learning electric guitar and I became a big fan of Jimmy Hendrix and Carlos Santana.
I wanted to figure out how I could interpret those artists and those rhythms through my instrument that I was most comfortable with which was with the violin and that's how it lead to me creating what I do now.

♪ ♪ Quetzal: This next song I'm going to play is called Rumba a Yemoja .
This song is a mash-up of several different styles.
It's like an homage to the deity called Yemoja.
