It is time to officially put week seven in the books for college football.
Welcome to post game notes here on LPB.
I'm Victor Howell.
Great to have you with us.
Lots of storylines to go over in the next 30 minutes here.
We have a lot of points scored once again at a Grambling football game.
We'll show you how that one played out over in the state of Alabama.
And for the first time in 26 years.
Louisiana Tech, UL-Monroe 30 miles apart, finally played each other in football.
We'll have those highlights of the I-20 showdown.
But let's start in Baton Rouge, where for the first time since 2018, we had a matchup between LSU and Mississippi State with both teams ranked in the top 25.
A little shine came off of this ball game because Camarillo Taylor, the outstanding quarterback from Mississippi State, did not play.
Those a gorgeous afternoon for football and Tiger Stadium.
Let's take you out there an early kick.
Tiger fans hate it.
The Tigers don't last 17 early kicks in Tiger Stadium as in 11:00.
Yeah they're 13 and four so they're doing just fine thank you very much.
Tigers move right down the field on the opening drive.
First quarter Sam Leavitt caps it off hitting Eugene Wilson the third for the ten yard touchdown.
Told you did not play.
That meant freshman Billy Puckett got the call early on.
He lets us one fly.
It goes high and straight into the arms of Ty Benefield.
And he's a defensive back for LSU.
Gets the interception.
LSU goes right back down the field Leavitt caps it off with a 27 yard completion to Jackson Harris.
Look how he gets tackled at the eight.
Or at least he gets touched at the eight.
But takes it all the way into the end zone as the teammates help him out and push them across the line.
And it's 14 nothing LSU.
Fourth and one for state.
They decide to go for it knowing they're going to need points and they get stopped.
It was just a rough day for Puckett and company.
Jordan Ross and Dylan Carpenter with the sack there once again, Tigers go right down the field 21 nothing after 11 hits Jackson Harris for his second touchdown for 17 yards.
Giffin challenged his team and their toughness to be able to finish this job.
And don't let Mississippi State back in.
Look at D.J.
Pickett taking at the heart, laying the wood.
Their second half was just a ten point affair.
LSU cruises though and they get the win 31 to nothing.
It's the first SEC shutout inside a Tiger Stadium, believe it or not since 2006.
Leavitt an outstanding day.
Remember we talked about him on game notes and some of his inconsistencies.
How about this day 31 of 38 for 289 yards and four touchdowns.
Next up for the Tigers one game before the by week.
It's a big one after the big win by Auburn over the weekend.
They will be on the Plains for another early kick next Saturday.
Here's Lane Kiffin after the ball game.
I think all last night was let's go play this game.
And I'm going to tell you at some point we're behind.
We're going to be ahead.
It's going to happen just like last week.
But I'm going to tell you we're behind.
We need a play like we're behind.
And so at halftime I really challenged them and I said, hey we're down ten points okay.
And so let's go out there like we have to stop them.
We've got to get the ball.
We've got to go score.
That was really a challenge to complete the game, play a complete game when you have that chance not to let them hang around and learn from last week.
How about some Friday night action out at Yulman Stadium?
With Tulane hopes hosting Memphis and a huge game in the American.
That's Trace Johnson.
He's a freshman and he got the start at quarterback.
Remember that front came moving through in Louisiana.
How windy it was Friday and Saturday.
Well it's good when it's at your back because Cooper helped you from 56 yards and nails a field goal.
Think you win.
It's tied at three.
Two plays later Marcus Stokes from Memphis to stalk a Burnside.
And he is checking out 76 yards on the completion.
Memphis has such an explosive offense.
It's ten three Tigers.
But they would meet their match with this Green Wave defense on Friday night after a way field goal made it 10 to 6, Manny Covey stood up and fumbles.
Kevin Adams the third gets the recovery for Tulane at midfield, and it took just three plays for Chase Johnson to get the wave into the end zone.
Hits Dustin Hill, splits the defenders down the sideline.
Gets it in 38 yards for the score.
And it's 1310 Tulane.
More defense for the Green Wave.
Second and ten Stokes is sacked by Makai Williams.
It's a loss of six.
He would get sacked on the next play as well for a loss of eight.
That would lead to another Tulane field goal.
So now it's 1610.
Last play of the quarter from the two lane 32.
No field goal into the win.
Stokes decides to throw it for some reason at the end of the half.
That's a bad call because TJ Smith 76 yards the other way.
It's 2310.
Greenway.
More defense.
Fourth and goal from Memphis Marcus Stokes on the keeper.
Never had a chance.
Fourth quarter.
Now it's fourth and one for Tulane.
Do you go for it.
Do you try to draw them offsides.
No.
They call the snap Johnson snaps it, hands it to Johnny Daniels.
And look what he does.
Instead of just getting the first down he gets a touchdown 48 yards and Will Hall is pumped.
3117 as Tulane stays undefeated this season at home again the problem has been on the road.
Look at what the Green Wave defense did.
Six Memphis turnovers Friday night in that ball game, which gave Memphis its first conference loss of the season, 14 points off of those turnovers and amazingly, look at the difference in the score.
Next game up for Tulane.
They stay at home Texas San Antonio comes to town.
But first how about some kudos and some celebrations from Will Hall.
Offensively you know we played the true freshman at quarterback.
Obviously y'all can tell he's going to be a great great player.
But he is young.
We wanted to protect him early.
We had a game plan to to to really try to run the ball and in getting some one on ones to make it easier on him early.
That was not a good my fault.
You know, I wanted to protect him early after the second series, being Coach Callaway.
Both of them had says it's like, man, that's cut him loose.
Now.
It's that the range goes up.
The horse run and he made some all schedule plays, which our football team has been in dire need of.
He kept some plays alive.
You know, to me, honestly, it felt like practice.
You know we our mindset was to come out and run the ball and establish the run.
And then we realized, hey, we need to start throwing the ball a little bit.
So we were able to do that, and I'm glad they trusted me.
And receivers made some great plays.
They really did.
I just believe in our football team, like we had to get one yard to beat this and everything we've been through, you know, where we going to do it?
We're gonna play.
We don't we don't play soft or we're going to do or will be who we say we are.
We say we're the toughest program in this league.
Like.
Like we gotta get that one yard right there.
We got a quarterback in the game.
There's a winner.
We gave him a two play check.
He checked the play.
Obviously it was a good check.
I thought our old line came off the ball.
Our tight ends came off the ball and Tony took it to the house.
These kids man like they keep working and keep finding things they can do to get better at to create an opportunity for something like tonight.
And I'm just thankful for them.
Thankful to be the coach here.
I love this place.
On November we've had a really tough schedule.
We have it played well.
I take responsibility for that and on that.
But hey baby, this was big night.
It was indeed.
And as you take a look at the standings of the American, the teams that are highlighted in yellow are still on the schedule for Tulane.
If they can take care of business at home and find a way to win one on the road, UTSA comes to town, as I mentioned last week, then they'll go to North Texas.
All of the other teams are in the bottom half of the American, so Tulane not anywhere close to being counted out.
It's just got a way to be able to find and get a win on the road, and we'll see what they can do that in a couple of weeks.
Let's go back now up to North Louisiana.
The excitement taking place on I-20.
One week ago, Louisiana Tech officially made its debut in the Sun Belt Conference, getting a huge win over the raging Cajuns from Louisiana.
This Saturday night.
They were on the road only about 30 minutes to the east down I-20 to take on you all.
Monroe, a matchup that we haven't seen in 26 years.
The Warhawks coming off of by trying to get things straightened out so they can get their first win of the season.
Let's take you out there, Monroe.
And it's a great atmosphere tailgating all day.
The fans were enjoying it.
But this game.
Well it started at seven but you couldn't tell by the first half.
No points were scored.
12 combined first downs Ulm had ten penalties for 110 yards in the first two quarters.
On the other side, Louisiana Tech was over three for field goals.
Brian Vincent trying to get his team going in the second half to see if they can make a mark and first play.
They take a deep shot going for it.
Aiden.
But unfortunately it's a little too overthrown and it's picked off by Caden Rogers.
It only took six plays for Louisiana Tech to score the first touchdown of the game.
Sergio Snyder up the middle and it's seven nothing.
Bulldogs.
Later in the third quarter Blake Baker at quarterback to Marcus.
Kauai's junior makes the catch inside the 20 yard line.
It's good for 27.
And a few plays later watch the misdirection by the dogs.
Little shovel pass there to Braden Blocker who scores.
And now it's 14.
Nothing Louisiana Tech.
Let's go.
Four minutes into the fourth quarter how was junior again on the reverse 56 yards as he turns on the Jets.
Question would be would he get caught?
Look at the hustle to bring him down inside the ten yard line.
But it basically just pauses the inevitable.
And that's another touchdown here as Blake Baker rolls out once again the blocker his second touchdown of the game in Louisiana Tech now has some breathing room.
Warhawks finally get some offense going.
Armenta back to pass finds Bryce Anderson.
That's good for 17 yards.
Now it's second and ten.
He's going to look left side to his Mr.
Reliable Nick Trujillo.
The ball is overthrown but you see the flags come in for interference.
But next play are mental looking for Franklin Colter.
And it got read all the way by Cam Franklin who never missed a step.
Read it perfectly.
Takes it back 66 yards before he's brought down.
It would lead to a field goal.
So the Warhawks make a change at quarterback.
Austin Carlisle now in at QB trying to get some offense going.
He hits Parker for 30 yards.
And once again during the Louisiana Tech side of the 54th and one inside the 20 on fourth and one.
Can he get it.
Let's bring out the chains.
Let's bring out the credit card.
They rule it.
Louisiana Tech ball.
Brian Vincent just left, shaking his head 24 to nothing is the final score.
Ulm only had one penalty in the second half.
It was the ten for 110 in the first half that killed them.
The next game for Louisiana Tech, it's home coming up and rustling against Old Dominion.
As for the Warhawks, they will be on the road at Troy.
His reaction from both coaches after the game.
I'm extremely proud of Coach Olson and our defensive staff and defensive players to get a shutout.
It's really hard to do that.
The that takeaways that they were able to create.
I think just a preparation that our players, you know, had all week.
He challenged defensively, challenged our defensive unit on Tuesday to play for quarters of our style of football because we hadn't done that yet.
And I can tell you about what we've done wrong, but I want to focus on where can we go, right, and how can we get it right in the third quarter.
How can we get it right the next time we get the football?
And that's what our guys are the ones that got it right.
Our players started to play the way that their coach too, and they started to execute.
Our quarterbacks saw the field better, we ran the football better and we rose up together and that was the challenge.
Just from the standpoint of defensively, you know we end up getting an interception and we score.
Then we get a stop, we get a score, we get a stop.
And so that's what our team rose up together coming out of halftime.
Anytime we got a positive plays.
Looked like we had a 15 yard penalty to pull us back.
Can't do that.
Can't do that in any game, much less, you know, a rivalry game like this one.
But defensively we did enough, in my opinion, to win the game more than enough.
But we've got to be able to play as a team in all three phases.
And that didn't happen tonight.
It goes back to even that last place fourth and a half yard.
Come on man fourth and a half yard.
So if we can't get a half yard we don't deserve to win.
Well I think if we can string together for quarters of football like we saw in the third quarter and fourth quarter, I think this team, you know, has a chance to win the every game that we got remaining on the schedule.
Just as on the other side of it, if we play like we did in the first half, you know on two sides, then it'll be hard to win.
But you know, the scheme is there, the players are there.
And I think more importantly I think they're they're the continuity and their belief in one another is their well well, well look at the new kids on the block.
And I'm not talking about the boy band Retro Concert.
Louisiana Tech newcomers to the Sun Belt find themselves early on atop the Western Division with South Alabama, who they will play later.
And there's Louisiana lingering right there at five and two and two and one.
Louisiana Tech once again set to host Old Dominion for homecoming.
The Warhawks will look for their first win of the season next week on the road at Troy.
Wait, did somebody just mention Troy and Louisiana?
You bet we did.
Those were the two teams that were squaring off at Our Lady of Lourdes Stadium Saturday, Chamber of Commerce Day over in Acadiana.
Two minutes into the ball game, Cajuns punting the real white at his own eight yard line completely misplaced it.
What he's doing trying to touch it.
We have no idea what Harrison Kidder recovers for the Cajun.
And that sets up lunch field on Winfield for this touchdown pass to Wade.
And just like that the Cajuns are up seven to nothing.
Jump ahead to late second quarter.
Watch the footwork by J.J.
Garner.
And then the speed gets it into the end zone from 37 yards out.
The two point conversion is no good.
It's 13 nothing Louisiana Trojans get the ball back.
Second play after they get the ball.
Goose Crowder at quarterback runs into his own teammate and fumbles.
Cajuns land on it.
And that leads to a field goal.
And it's 16.
Nothing raging Cajuns.
Louisiana actually gets the ball back again Tony Sterner hit from 42 yards out to make it 19.
Nothing at the half.
Four minutes into the third quarter Tucker Gilcrease up the middle and he scores to make it 19 six.
But fourth quarter it's 26 six Cajuns and they're going to add to it Anthony Reagan junior from 15 yards out in from the left side.
Nice bounce back win for the Cajuns after that disappointing loss up in Ruston 33 to 6 is the final.
The cages have four players with 50 yards or more rushing.
They run for 243 as a team.
Look at the time of possession.
Almost 37 minutes for Louisiana.
Next up there on the road in Hattiesburg to take on Southern Miss.
But here's Michael after the win.
First of all, our defense was a catalyst in the first half.
You know, huge play on special teams leads to seven points.
Defense was able to give us some short fields on defense by creating takeaways and turnovers.
And we were able to get points.
Really pleased with the way we ran the football.
We needed it.
You know, especially when you got through the third quarter.
You know we were we were going we were going to you know we were going to run it.
Tonight was a really good team win because we made plays in all three phases that affected the game.
But I still don't believe that we scratched the surface of our best football and that's exciting.
Now let's go back up to North and focus on Grambling for just a minute.
Remember when game notes Saturday morning, we talked about the struggles that Grambling has had on the road under head coach Mickey Joseph, just four wins total in his two years.
They're up at Grambling.
They've actually lost their last four straight on the road, and that's where they were Saturday afternoon over in Alabama taking on Alabama A&M.
But this Grambling team has been scoring better than 50 points in the last two outings.
So could they keep it going and could the defense step up?
What were five minutes into the opening quarter?
Jacoby Robinson hits Tyson George ten yards to cap a three play drive to make it seven nothing.
Grambling in the offense once again picks right up ten free Tigers in the second quarter.
Robinson is going to hit Nissan Dickerson, and Dickerson is off to the races 47 yards before he finally gets brought down at the five yard line.
But on the next play, don't worry about it.
Andre Cruise up the middle and it's another touchdown.
Grammy's now up 17 three on the road.
Looking good.
Now it's 1710 under six minutes to go in the half.
And the quarterback for Alabama A&M finds Jalen Bean's 61 yards.
It's 1716 A&M adds a field goal.
So now it's 1916.
The third quarter is bonkers Cornelius Brown hits being again.
So it's 2617 ensuing kickoff.
Remember what he told us.
If you hear that you know something's about to happen.
So we kickoff Kingston Jones for whatever reason takes it out of his end zone.
And he gets popped and the ball is loose and A&M recovers.
So the grounding offense stays on the sideline.
Alabama A&M is back on the field and three plays later it's Colton Nero from 14 yards out.
Now all of a sudden it's 3317.
All right let's get Grambling offense back on the field.
We've got another kickoff coming right after A&M goes to the extra point.
Once again two yards deep in the end zone.
And Tony Phillips this time takes it out.
Wait a minute.
That's maybe a good reason.
There he goes.
It's 102 yards on the return to put the Tigers on the board while the offense is still.
Wait, wait.
Can I go back and see that again?
Hold on real quick.
You've got to be kidding me.
What is up with this?
Athletes dropping the ball.
You can't carry it in another yard.
Another three steps Alabama A&M challenges and wins it.
So they get the touchback at the 20.
And guess what.
While Graham his offense is still on the sideline they score again.
Brown to been 67 yards a hat trick for touchdowns between those two.
The last time the Tiger offense was on the field it was 1917.
It's now 3917.
And Mickey Joseph in for a long day 61 to 31 is your final score.
A&M for the receptions, had 24 receptions for 433 yards through the air Cornelius Brown their quarterback, throws for 417 and five touchdowns.
Next up for Grambling they have another bye week.
Then they'll be on the road Halloween night to take on Texas Southern.
Let's stop down in and Hammond, where it was homecoming weekend for the Lions and Southeastern.
They were welcoming Lamar to have an America.
Aiden McCown the quarterback for Lamar hit by Gabe Copeland.
Ball comes loose.
Remember this from our team was a team that played its way into the playoffs last year just like southeastern did.
Third and nine from their own 24.
McCown to Blake Thomas.
He's good for 28 yards.
It led to a 28 yard field goal.
So it's six nothing Lamar after this one goes in having already been up three to nothing.
Next possession for the Lions.
They don't waste a lot of time on this one Kyle Low at quarterback.
Wait it's a quarterback keeper.
And it's 22 yards before it's all said and done.
He gets brought down just inside the 40 yard line.
And then on the very next play Kyrie Paul watch him break two sets of ankles right there.
And he's gone.
And by the time he hits the end zone there's not a defender within 15 yards of him seven six Lions on that 60 yard touchdown three minutes now into the second quarter.
Watch Kyle Lo looking back.
Waits runs.
Now he finds an opening and makes one move.
And he's into the end zone 25 yards for the touchdown.
And it's 14 six Lions after a three and out by Lamar.
We talked about this with Frank self on game notes.
Why do people keep kicking to decay.
Joseph I have no idea what the Lions love it.
He takes it back almost 40 yards on the return.
And that leads to this with Kyle low on the option to Calvin Smith Jr.
It's 21 six Lions now 2113 in the third.
Low to Lonnie Shinn 18 yards on the completion.
Gets it inside of Lamar territory.
The long drive ends with low keeping it on a one yard touchdown his second of the ball game.
It's 2813 but Lamar comes back and McCown the Blake Thomas this is good for 26 yards.
And it's going to be 2820.
Let's go.
Late fourth quarter 3523 Lamar has the ball.
And it's McCown to Thomas again their third touchdown together.
That makes it a three point game with under a minute to go.
You know what's coming.
We're lining up for the onside kick.
Frank Tom keep a look on it.
When we get the ball it takes one big bounce.
Lions jump on it.
And that's your ball game.
Lions get a huge win over the eighth ranked team in FCS 34 to 31.
As the Lions rushed for 224.
Only ranch 52 plays.
So many statistics show that it was Lamar's favor, but in the end, it's what matters on the scoreboard as southeastern improves to four and three and two and two in conference.
Next up there on the road at the conference's number one team, Stephen F Austin.
Let's go to Natchitoches.
Two teams coming off of a bye in the South End Conference.
The Cowboys from McNeese visiting the demons from Northwestern State, looking to try to get that first win, said they had a really good bye week.
We heard from coach on on Saturday morning on game, saying he liked what his team did, trying to build that confidence.
Well, here we go.
Opening drive Zay Davis look at him directing traffic down the field 32 yards on the game.
Next play though the demons try some razzle dazzle.
They had the razzle forgot to dazzle.
The pitch back was fumbled.
It didn't reach the quarterback.
And the Cowboys recover.
Next Northwestern State possession Zach Wilkie a quarterback, sees the pocket disappear.
He fumbles and the Cowboys jump on it.
You're starting to see a theme.
Lane McCorkle trying to get his team going.
Hold on to the football.
It's three nothing McNeese early second quarter.
And that's when Wilkie finds Eugene almost 34 yards for the touchdown.
The demons have the seven three lead under two minutes to go in the first half.
Inside the five Jake Strong picked off by Brandon Ross looking to the end zone.
Instead it goes 64 yards the other way.
Huge interception.
There would be a penalty so the ball would come back.
It's no more scoring.
So it's seven three demons at the break a minute into the third quarter.
Strong across the middle and finds Kevin Riddell.
And look at his stride.
This is all good for 66 yards when it's done.
But he gets tripped up at the seven yard line.
Great hustle by two on Ray to bring him down.
But the Cowboys do score.
Omari Wiggins takes it in.
What a pickup.
He's been out of the transfer portal coming from Louisiana Tech.
It's ten seven McNeese after a quick three and out for the demons.
It takes two plays for strong to find Kevin 37 yards here.
And now it's 17 seven.
Cowboys have a little breathing room.
Demons get the ball inside the ten.
But Zach Wilkie rolling out just loses it.
Another missed opportunity for the demons.
And that was the theme in this ball game as the Cowboys jump on it.
End of the third quarter.
Hutch Swilly out of the backfield.
He picks up 31 yards and goes far side inside the red zone down to the 19 yard line.
Same drive start of the fourth quarter and it's Willie again.
He takes it in to make it 24 over seven.
But the demons as we have seen look they keep fighting.
Sometimes the hole is just too big to crawl out Zach Wilkie he gets it in from 12 yards out.
It's 2414 under two minutes to play Woking looking for the end zone.
Something has to get done.
Looks deep receiver cuts it short miscommunication.
The Cowboys get the interception.
Believe it or not both of the state does add one more touchdown.
But they lose it 24 to 21.
The big key five turnovers which led to seven cowboy points.
McNeese next is on the road at Incarnate Word for the Demons homecoming when they welcome the Nicholls Colonels.
Here's a reaction from coach McCorkle in Natchitoches.
That's a hard one.
That's a hard one.
Guys spilled their guts out there against a really, really good football team.
Our defense did some things that they have not done all year, and I could not be prouder of Matt Conner and our defensive staff and the plan they put together the last ten days.
I was proud of our defense after that.
The story of the game five turnovers, three three.
I believe in the red zone, maybe four two, maybe on our first two drives.
And you know, you take 2 or 3 of those away and it's a whole different ball game.
And those are just things you got to learn from and grow from.
And you know I don't know turnovers can be cyclical sometime.
And they got us today.
So we got to be better.
They're the best way to learn how to win is to win.
And that's something we got to figure out how to do in a hurry.
But I mean, there's no question we have a much improved, much better football team.
Well, getting close for the team and Saturday's loss to McNeese under Blaine McCorkle, the sixth loss decided by seven points of less.
And it's the second one this season as they look to continue in on the field.
Let's wrap things up down in Thibodaux, where the Colonels from Nicholls were hosting Stephen F Austin, the top team in the South End Conference.
It was a gorgeous day for football, but a tough day for football for the Cardinals because once Steve and Austin got things cranked up, well, they really put the wood to him here.
Change a quarterback for Nicholls.
Chase Richardson getting the start over Ian Rodrigue Richardson rolls out his Johnson for 11 yards.
Then Shane Lee up the middle on the direct snap.
This is good for 30 yards and gives the Colonels great field position to start this ball game.
But then Lee winds up again under center direct snap on fourth and three.
He gets nothing and doesn't like it.
Stephen F Austin's defense gets him for a loss of two, and that's going to open up the offense for the Lumberjacks opening possession Gavin Rutherford to Jaylen Jenkins Jenkins does most of the work.
It's a short pass.
But when it's all said and done this is good for 51 yards on the completion.
Down inside the 15 yard line and add more yards because of the penalty.
Preston Alford then takes it in up the middle and it's seven nothing Stephen F Austin later in the first.
Rutherford again, this time with a dart to my favorite player.
See it's bugs Mortimer.
See, I was going to run the outs once he went into the end zone and got the score.
21 yards is 14.
Nothing.
Five minutes in the second quarter.
I'm running out of time to do this impression, but it's bugs Mortimer again.
See them lining up on the outside.
See my name is bugs.
