Hi.

Welcome guys to REACH.

I'm Melissa Keely and Im the executive director of REACH Studio Art Center and we're so excited to have you here today.

Can you tell us a little bit about the studio?

Yeah, so we are a community based art studio that's focused on out of school arts programing.

So after 4:00 and on Saturdays and all summer long we want to make sur that all youth in the community have access to arts programing.

So we have scholarships and drop in programs So everybody i welcome to come here at REACH.

So what are the benefits of making art?

Oh, there's a lot of benefits.

I think for a lot of people, it is such a big part of how they identify that they just crave to make art.

even for people who don't necessarily come to REACH and say, Im an artist they can build a muscle and get more comfortable creating art and come away learning something new and finding what medium really speaks to them and kind of connects with what they enjoy doing.

Artists are great problem solvers.

They're great at putting together different concepts.

They're really good at approaching a mistak and finding a success out of it.

All of these are skills that pertain to school or to a career or even to day to day life.

Can you show us around?

Oh, I would love to.

So this is our clay studio and in here we have eight wheels We have a kiln room for firing the pieces and a hand building area.

Check out all these tools.

Look at that one.

Thats pretty big.

These ones are called wooden ribs.

Thats super cool.

Let me bring you guys into our fiber arts studio.

So we do a lot of different fabric and fiber based art in here.

We do sewing classes.

We do things like surface dyeing.

So you can see it kind of looks like a chemistry lab.

We do embellishment.

We do crochet.

We do different things with wool felting.

So a lot of different fiber based our activities in here.

This is really pretty.

Mhm.

Its like this like marble.

And up here it looks like a tree.

That's so cool.

Mhm.

And over here it looks like space.

That's really pretty.

I like how they incorporated the lights.

So this is our teen studio, and this is where we're going to host our class tonight.

Wow, I can't wait.

This seems really exciting.

It's going to be a lot of fun.

Right now we're about to get started with our gelli printing.

I'm super excited but Im a little nervous.

Me too, do you kno what you're going to make yet?

Not yet.

Do you?

Me either.

I think I'm going to do like a blue background.

Yeah.

And then like, try and put some like purple dots in it.

Cute Or green.

Im not sure though.

Im trying to make a pattern.

Yeah?

What kind of pattern?

Some kind of.

Something that looks like a flower.

Im really nervous.

We had so much fun making gelli prints.

My favorite part was learning about how prints are made.

And my favorite part was exploring the studio.
