THIS IS TREASURES INSIDE THE MUSEUM.

IT IS ONE OF THE OLDEST CITIES IN THE NATION.
FOUNDED IN 1639, IT IS KNOWN FOR ITS RICH HISTORY AND ONE OF THE GREATEST COLLECTIONS OF EARLY AMERICAN ARCHITECTURE.
MANY OF THE HOMES HAVE BEEN RESTORED AND PRESERVED.
THAT IS ALSO TRUE OF SOME OF THE LARGER AND MORE PUBLIC BUILDINGS.
THE TREASURES INSIDE THIS MUSEUM ARE PRICELESS.
BUT THE BUILDING ITSELF IS ONE OF AMERICA'S TREASURES.
HAVING INFLUENCED THE ARCHITECTURE AND INFLUENCING THE WAY HOMES LOOKED DURING COLONIAL TIMES, THE REDWOOD LIBRARY IN NEWPORT, RHODE ISLAND, IS THE OLDEST LIBRARY STILL HOUSED AND OPERATED IN ITS ORIGINAL BUILDING.
LOOKING AT THE FRONT OF THE ORIGINAL BUILDING, THE DESIGN IS LIKE A ROMAN DORIC TEMPLE.
IT WAS THE FIRST COMMISSION OF PETER HARRISON, KNOWN AS AMERICA'S FIRST ARCHITECT.
I CAN SAY IT FLATLY, ONE OF THE SIGNAL BUILDINGS IN THE ARCHITECTURAL HISTORY OF AMERICA.
WE KNOW THEY ARE GOING TO THE SOUTH OF FRANCE TO LOOK AT ANTIQUITIES BUT WHEN HE GOES BACK AND CREATES A UVA, HE IS CHANNELING THE FACADE OF THE REDWOOD LIBRARY.
>> THE BUILDING MAY LOOK LIKE IT IS BUILT FROM STONE BUT IS BUILT OUT OF A MATERIAL MORE EASILY FOUND IN THE AREA.
OFF TO THE SIDE OF THE BUILDING, THEY WERE SENT TO OFFICE SPACE WHILE THE BUILDINGS IN FRONT ALLOW FOR READING AND NATURAL LIGHT.
THE REDWOOD IS ALSO USED FOR A PLACE OF GATHERING AND CONVERSATION.
TWO THINGS THAT HAPPENED OFTEN AND LIKELY SHAPED A NEW COUNTRY.
>> THE PHYSICAL EXPERIENCE OF BEING IN THIS ROOM IS SORT OF A TIME MORE PERFECT WERE YOU GO BACK IN TIME AND IMAGINE YOURSELF IN THIS ROOM WITH OUR COLONIAL FOREBEARS.
LIBRARIES WERE ALWAYS POLITICALLY CHARGED.
THE IDEA THAT PEOPLE GOT TOGETHER IN THIS ROOM AND DECIDED THAT WE ARE ON THE SAME PAGE.
MAYBE WE DON'T LIKE THAT KING IN ENGLAND SO MUCH.
BESIDES THE CHURCH AND THE EARLY ADVERSITIES, IT IS THE ONLY CULTURAL INSTITUTION THAT IS ONGOING SINCE THE COLONIAL TIME.
A DIRECT LINK.
YOU ARE ENACTING THE SAME ACTIVITIES OF THE COLONIALS.
CRACKS -- >> THE REDWOOD LIBRARY WAS ESTABLISHED TOGETHER WITH 45 OTHER COLUMNISTS THAT WANTED TO MAKE WRITTEN KNOWLEDGE MORE WIDELY AVAILABLE TO PEOPLE LIVING IN THE AREA.
REDWOOD HIMSELF CONTRIBUTED THE MEANS TO BUY TITLES SO THE LIBRARY COULD BE OPEN TO THE PUBLIC.

IT IS NOT THE FIRST PRINTING OF THIS ANATOMY BOOK.
IT WAS PUBLISHED IN 1698 BY WILLIAM COPPER.
I HAVE IT OPEN TO A PLATE THAT SHOWS THE RIDGES OF A FINGER AND SOME OF THE LEADERS OF SKIN.

SOME OF THE BOOKS WERE USEFUL FOR SURGEONS.
WE DON'T HAVE RECORDS OF WHO USED THE BOOKS.
WE HAVE RECEIPT BOOKS THAT SHOW WHICH WERE CHECKED OUT, BUT THE NAMES WERE RIPPED OFF WHEN THE BOOKS WERE BROUGHT BACK.
WE DON'T KNOW WHO CHECKED AT EACH BOOK BUT WE HAVE A RECORD THAT SHOWS THE BOOKS WERE USED.
>> THE COLLECTION HAS GROWN OVER THE YEARS AND NOW BOASTS OVER 200,000 HOLDINGS.
WHILE MANY WERE PURCHASED, SOME RARE ITEMS COME FROM THE GENEROSITY OF OTHERS.

IT WAS ONLY THROUGH THE WORK OF RESEARCHERS AND SCHOLARS THAT STUDY HERE THAT WE WERE ABLE TO DATE IT TO THE 14 40'S AND 14 50'S -- 1440'S AND 1450'S BECAUSE OF THE DETAILED WORK OF THE ARTIST.

THIS TEXT WAS ALL DONE BY HAND.
>> THIS MANUSCRIPT WAS WORKED ON BY A GROUP OF ARTISTS IN THE 1400S.
THEY WERE KNOWN AS THE MASTERS OF THE GOLD SCROLLS.
THEY WORKED FROM 1420 TO 1450.
WE BELIEVE THIS WAS 1440, THE HEIGHT OF THEIR WORK.
>> THIS EXQUISITE BOOK IS AS DIVERSE AS THE RESIDENTS THEY HOPE VISIT THESE HALLS.
>> WE HOPE TO ATTRACT PEOPLE THAT ARE INTERESTED IN CULTURE IN DIFFERENT WAYS.
WE HAVE THE ART LOVERS, CONTEMPORARY ART PEOPLE, HISTORIC RHODE ISLAND PEOPLE.
EVERYBODY COMES TO CULTURE, FINE ARTS, AND HISTORIC UNDERSTANDING AT DIFFERENT LEVELS.
I FEEL LIKE WE BRIDGE THE GAP IN MANY WAYS.
WE HAVE THE MATERIALS AND INFRASTRUCTURE TO SATISFY THE RESEARCHER.
WE ALSO HAVE A VERY FINE OFFERING OF CIRCULATING BOOKS, FINE ART BOOKS, EXHIBITION CATALOGS, AND A WHOLE SLEW OF NEWSPAPERS AND PERIODICALS.
THERE IS A BROWSING PUBLIC, A RESEARCH PUBLIC, AND THE STUDENTS.
WE ARE VERY MUCH LOOKING TO ATTRACT STUDENTS.
WE HAVE INTERNS.
WE HAVE VISITING CLASSES.
SCHOOL KIDS GET BUSSED TO EXPERIENCE THE COLONIAL HISTORY.
AND THE MUSEUM EXPERIENCE OF THE VALUE OF LOOKING AT THINGS THAT ARE MARVELOUS AND HAVE SOMETHING TO TEACH US.
LOGICALLY, EVERY CULTURAL INSTITUTION SHOULD BE AS OPEN AND INCLUSIVE AS POSSIBLE.
WE ARE TRYING TO DO JUST THAT.

IN THE GREATER NEWPORT AREA, THE CLOCK MAY HAVE BEEN A GCL -- A CLAGAT.
WILLIAM CLAGAT WAS A PRINTER AND SCIENTIST, BUT BEST KNOWN AS A CLOCKMAKER WORKING AT HIS SHOP IN NEWPORT.
>> IN MANY WAYS, CLAGAT HAS BEEN MARGINALIZED.
WHEN PEOPLE THINK OF COLONIAL AMERICAN NEW FORT, THE DECORATIVE ARTISTS THINK OF TOWNSEND AND FURNITURE.
CLAGAT BELONGS WITH THAT GROUP.
FIRST OF ALL, THEY COME TO NEWPORT AT THE SAME TIME IN THE FIRST QUARTER OF THE 18TH CENTURY.
THEY ESTABLISH NEWPORT AS A COMMERCIAL POWERHOUSE AND AN ARTISAN ALL ARTISTIC CENTER -- ARTISANAL ARTISTIC CENTER OF NOTE.
[BELL RINGING] >> MANY CLOCK HAVE BEEN PASSED DOWN THROUGH GENERATIONS.
ONE OF THE GREATEST MASTERPIECES IS OWNED BY THE REDWOOD LIBRARY.
IT WAS ONLY NATURAL THAT THEY OPENED THEIR GALLERY SPACE TO AN EXHIBIT OF SOME OF CLAGAT'S FINEST CLOCK.
>> THIS EXHIBIT SATISFIES ONE OF OUR CORE CONSTITUENCIES, PEOPLE WHO ARE INTERESTED IN COLONIAL HISTORY AND EARLY DECORATIVE ARTS.
IT OFFERS UP A HISTORY.
THESE ARE THE FINEST FROM THE COLONIAL PERIOD AND IT JUST SO HAPPENS THAT THEY WERE MADE IN NEWPORT, RHODE ISLAND.
IT IS A PUBLIC STATEMENT, SAYING, WE ARE CULTURED PEOPLE.
WE UNDERSTAND NEOCLASSIC ARCHITECTURE AND WE DECORATE OUR HOMES WITH SOME OF THE FINEST DECORATIVE ARTS OF THE PERIOD.
>> THIS EXHIBIT DEMONSTRATES CLAGAT'S CRAFTSMANSHIP.
WORKING CLOCK'S ARE CONSIDERED RARE AND THIS IS LIKELY ONE AND ONLY -- THE ONE AND ONLY TIME SO MANY WILL BE DISPLAYED TOGETHER.
>> THERE SEEMS TO BE A RESURGENCE IN THE INTEREST OF RHODE ISLAND MATERIAL CULTURE.
EARLY RHODE ISLAND MATERIAL CULTURE.
THERE WAS AN IMPORTANT EXHIBITION A FEW YEARS AGO THAT COULD BE SEEN AS AN EXTENSION OF THIS.
PROGRAMMING, AS YOU CAN IMAGINE, IS VERY TRICKY.
ONE HAS TO BE ACCESSIBLE AND FRIENDLY.
I FEEL OUR HISTORY DEMANDS THAT WE ASPIRE TO A CERTAIN LEVEL OF RIGOR AND ORIGINAL RESEARCH.
AND AN EXHIBITION SUCH AS THIS ONE IS VERY CONTEXTUAL.
IT IS APPROPRIATE TO US BECAUSE WE WERE ONE OF THE IMPORTANT COLONIAL INSTITUTIONS.
IT MAKES SENSE THAT WE HAVE A SERIOUS EXHIBITION ON ONE OF THE HIGH POINTS OF COLONIAL DECORATIVE ARTS AT THE REDWOOD LIBRARY ITSELF.

EZRA STILES WAS THE LIBRARIAN OF THE REDWOOD LIBRARY JUST BEFORE THE REVOLUTIONARY WAR.
AND IN 1758, EZRA STILES WALKED THROUGH THE TOWN, PASTE AT HIS STEPS, AND MADE THIS DETAILED MAP OF ALL OF THESE STREETS IN THIS QUARTER OF NEWPORT.
HE ALSO INCLUDED THE WHARFS.
>> IT INCLUDES METICULOUS DETAILS, LISTING ONE STORY OR TWO-STORY HOMES, HOW MANY CHIMNEYS EACH HOME HAD, AND WHERE SHOPS AND BUSINESSES WERE LOCATED.
IT IS ONE OF THE EARLIEST RECORDED MAPS OF NEWPORT AND A TREASURE TO ANYONE RESEARCHING THE CITY BY THE SEA PRIOR TO THE REVOLUTIONARY WAR.
THE SAME ERA PRODUCED SOME OF THE BEST EXAMPLES OF EARLY AMERICAN PORTRAITURE.
IN THE MAIN LIBRARY, THE ROOMS LEND THEMSELVES TO EXHIBITING MANY OF THE PAINTINGS THAT ARE PART OF THE COLLECTION.

AND WE HAVE A PERMANENT COLLECTION ON VIEW.
IT REALLY DOES CONSTITUTE QUITE A MUSEUM EXPERIENCE.

RHODE ISLAND TREASURER SETH MAGAZINER WANTED TO USE THIS PARTICULAR BIBLE AT HIS OFFICIAL INAUGURATION.

ON NEW YEAR'S MORNING, I DROVE DOWN TO THE REDWOOD, PACKED THE BIBLE SECURELY, IN AN ACID-FREE BOX.
I DROVE IT TO PROVIDENCE WHERE I KEPT AN EYE ON IT DURING THE CEREMONY.
THE STATE TREASURER'S WIFE HELD IT FOR HIM TO SWEAR THAT BOTH ON.

IT WAS GIVEN BACK TO ME AND PUT IN THE BOX AND DRIVEN BACK TO THE REDWOOD.
I PUT IT BACK IN THE VAULT WHERE IT LIVES.
>> THE REDWOOD HAS SEEN ITS SHARE OF HISTORY.
IT WAS OCCUPIED AS A BRITISH OFFICER'S CLUB IN THE REVOLUTIONARY WAR AND WAS LATER THE FIRST MEETING PLACE OF THE RHODE ISLAND GENERAL ASSEMBLY.
THESE ROOMS HAVE ONLY -- ALWAYS BEEN USED AS GATHERING PLACES NOT ONLY FOR POETRY READINGS BUT ALSO FOR PUBLIC DISCUSSION AND A FREE EXCHANGE OF IDEAS ABOUT CIVIC ISSUES OF THE DAY.
IT IS A LEGACY THE FOUNDERS WOULD BE PROUD OF.
>> I HOPE ABRAHAM REDWOOD SEES WE ARE EXECUTING HIS MISSION.
I THINK HE HAD AN IDEA THAT CULTURE MATTERS AND THAT AN EDUCATED CITIZENRY IS PROBABLY GOOD FOR THE COUNTRY.
ALL OF THIS MATERIAL HAS A LOT TO TEACH US.
WE ARE VERY MUCH COMMITTED TO THAT EDUCATIONAL MISSION.
AND WE ARE DOING IT.
I HAVE TO BELIEVE THAT THE 46 FIRST MEMBERS WOULD PROBABLY BE OK WITH WHAT WE'RE DOING.

[APPLAUSE] >> IN 2018, A GROUP OF WORLD WAR II VETERANS JOINED A SMALL GATHERING TO CUT A IBBON AND CELEBRATE THE OPENING OF THE WORLD WAR II EDUCATION CENTER.
INSIDE THIS EDUCATION CENTER IS A COLLECTION OF ARTIFACTS AND MILITARY HISTORY THAT, TOGETHER, TELL THE STORY OF THE MOST IMPACTFUL EVENT OF THE 20TH CENTURY.
WORLD WAR II.
>> EVERY ARTIFACT AND HERE HAS A PERSONAL STORY BEHIND IT.
SOME OF THE STORIES WE KNOW.
A LOT OF THEM WE DON'T KNOW.
I THINK IT BRINGS HOME, VISUALLY, WHAT THE WAR WAS ABOUT.
WE CREATED THE EDUCATION CENTER AS A PLACE WHERE STUDENTS COULD COME AND ACTUALLY SEE THE ARTIFACTS OF WORLD WAR II.
A LOT OF TIMES, WE READ ABOUT THEM IN BOOKS.
WE WANT TO HAVE THEM COME IN HERE AND HAVE A VISUAL EXPERIENCE OF THE UNIFORMS, WEAPONS, PROPAGANDA POSTERS, AND EVERYTHING RELATED TO THE WAR.
>> AMONG ALL OF THE WEAPONS AND UNIFORMS IS A PIECE OF WORLD WAR II HISTORY THAT IS TRULY A TREASURE.
IT REPRESENTS THE TURNING POINT WHEN THE UNITED STATES ENTERED THE WAR.
>> THIS IS A SECTION OF THE USS ARIZONA THAT CAME TO THE EDUCATION CENTER.
>> IN EARLY DECEMBER 19 41, MOST OF THE PACIFIC FLEET WAS TIED UP IN PEARL HARBOR, HAWAII.
IT ALL CHANGED EARLY ON A SUNDAY MORNING.
THE BIGGEST BLOW OF THE SURPRISE ATTACK CAME WHEN ONE OF THE JAPANESE BONDS HIT THE BATTLESHIP USS ARIZONA, CAUSING A MASSIVE EXPLOSION.
>> YESTERDAY, DECEMBER 7, 1941, THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA WAS SUDDENLY AND DELIBERATELY ATTACKED.
>> THIS IS AN IMPORTANT PART OF HISTORY.
IT WAS THE MOMENT WORLD WAR II BEGAN.
IT REPRESENTS THE SINGLE BIGGEST LOSS OF LIFE.
THERE ARE STILL OVER 900 ON THE BATTLESHIP.
>> A TURNING POINT CAME ON JUNE 6, 1944.
D-DAY.
>> ONE OF THE MOST FASCINATING EXHIBITS WE HAVE HERE -- >> IT RELIED ON DECEPTION.

SHOOTERS CALLED RUPERT'S WERE DROPPED AWAY FROM THE REAL DROPS OWNS WHERE THE TROOPS WERE JUMPING IN BEHIND ENEMY LINES.
>> IT TIED UP EXTRA GERMAN TROOPS TO FIGHT AND TRY TO FIGURE OUT WHO THESE.
TROOPERS WERE.

WE ARE ONE OF THE ONLY EDUCATION CENTERS IN THE WORLD THAT HAS A RUPERT.
IF YOU HAVE SEEN THE MOVIE "THE LONGEST DAY," WE HAVE A PROP FROM THE MOVIE.

IT WOULD ENTITLE YOU TO A CERTAIN AMOUNT OF THINGS LIKE COFFEE, BUTTER, OR MEET.
-- OR MEAT.
EVERYTHING WAS BEING RATIONED.
EVERY AMERICAN GOT ONE OF THESE BOOKS AND YOU COULD ONLY USE A CERTAIN AMOUNT OF COUPONS IN THAT BOOK.
SOMETIMES IT WAS A FUEL RATION.
IT WAS IMPORTANT TO THE WAR EFFORT AND A LOT OF THESE ITEMS, NOT ONLY RATION BOOKS, BUT WHAT TO DO IN AN AIR RAID.
WE GO BACK TO REMEMBER PEARL HARBOR.
THOSE WOULD APPEAR ON A LOT OF THE ENVELOPES WHERE PEOPLE WOULD BE SENDING OUT MAIL TO OTHER PEOPLE.
AND THE V-MAIL, THESE WERE MESSAGES THE SOLDIERS WOULD SEND HOME.
IT WOULD BE ON A SMALL PIECE OF PAPER.
YOU COULD GET THE WHOLE MESSAGE TO CONSERVE PAPER.
THIS IS THE WAY THEY WOULD CONDENSE IT DOWN.
WHEN YOU WROTE A LETTER TO SOMEBODY, IT SHOWS HITLER'S AS A PIG.
YOU HAVE MUSSOLINI, TOJO, AND HILLER -- HITLER.
THIS IS A WAVE OF PATRIOTISM.
EVERYTHING WAS GEARED TOWARDS WINNING THE WAR AND DEFEATING THE JAPANESE.

THE FOUNDATION FOR ALL OF THOSE THINGS ARE THE DOCUMENTARY FILMS THAT WE DO.
WE SEE THEM GRAVITATE TOWARDS SOMETHING LIKE THIS.
A DISPLAY OF PEARL HARBOR AND THE USS ARIZONA.
WE HAVE FILMS THAT WE CAN GIVE TO THEM OR THEY LEARN MORE ABOUT THE ARIZONA.
THEY WANTED THEIR ASHES BROUGHT BACK.
THE ENTIRE FOUNDATION IS THE 22 FILMS WE HAVE DONE.
WE HAVE A FILM ON THE HOLOCAUST pWE HAVE DONE.
WHAT IS GREAT ABOUT THE CENTER.
THEY CAN SEE THIS IN PERSON AND THEY LEAVE WITH THE STORY.
THEY CAN GO HOME AND WATCH THE STORY.
LOOK ACROSS THE INTERNET FOR ANY INFORMATION.
