I didn't realize, I always liked oldies and stuff and, but I didn't realize how much of that music came from where I lived until I was a little bit into my later teens and early twenties, and then I started connecting all the dots.

Also, when I was a teenager, a lot of friends were getting into punk rock, hardcore.

That kind of thing was happening in the early eighties.

And there was a big scene in Memphis and there was a great club, the Antenna Club.

But then, of course, also just all the...

I worked at Sun Studios for a while and I loved all that stuff, the blues and rockabilly stuff that was cut there.

And then, of course, Stax.

And I mean, it's a pretty heavy place musically.

There's a lot, there's a lot to learn about, and I just tried to absorb as much of it as I could.

I really, I had some, I had some, a lot of traumatic experiences when I was young that left me really struggling to, to cast off a lot of or deal with a lot of shame.

And so The Oblivians was a great thing for that because it was this very, like the darkest voice in your head that tells you all these negative things about yourself all the time.

And I always experienced that.

And with that band, it's like that voice which is always talking, telling you terrible things about yourself, it's like giving it a microphone.

It comes from a trying to laugh in the face of death kind of idea, making fun of very dark things.

But I finally got to a point where that seemed like the line was becoming very blurry between who was me and who was this persona.

And then I met my wife, and that was the greatest thing that ever happened to me, and it made me feel much more hopeful about life.

And I wanted to write songs that reflected that.

And I've always been trying to move towards that.

And I feel like this last record was probably the most successful attempt at expressing that, a sense of hopefulness.
