Learn Moreabout PBS online sponsorship(bright music) >>Much in the life and career of George Marshall remains overlooked, unconsidered, and even little appreciated.
There may be understandable reasons for this.
Most Americans now living were born after General Marshall died in 1959.
His biographers have also pointed to the general's own personal qualities as contributing factors.
George Marshall was completely unflamboyant.
He was naturally modest, unwilling to stand in the public limelight, and he absolutely refused to cultivate any stature of celebrity for himself.
George Marshall never wrote his memoirs or made any effort to cash in on the importance of his military career and his public service.
