- Breakfast is a very important part of every single day.

- And rhyming is a very important part of your song.

It makes the lyrics more memorable and helps you get your ideas across.

- You know what rhyming is, Esther?

Rhyming is the breakfast of the songwriting world, and today, we're not eating alone.

We have a very good friend here to help us.

- Hello.

(laughs) Ooh, pancakes.

- Oh yeah.

You know what's up.

- Yeah.

- This is Jul Big Green.

- Jul is a songwriter, and one of the types of music he works on is rap.

In rap, rhyming plays a really important role.

♪ I fell in love with a beautiful being ♪ ♪ And then my world flipped upside down ♪ ♪ And then everything came together unexpectedly ♪ ♪ Our lives came colliding like waves on the beach ♪ - So Jul, in your words, what is rap?

- Rhythm and poetry so taking rhythm and poetry, smashing together, and making a sandwich.

- I like sandwiches.

- I like sandwiches, too, specially- - Me too.

- breakfast sandwiches.

- If I had a sandwich and cup of coffee sent up to me.

- You get a pancake and an orange.

You put that in there.

We got a breakfast sandwich.

- I'd like my orange a little peeled, though.

- Right here in our yard, I saw a bird eat a worm for its breakfast.

- So Jul, how'd you get involved in rapping?

- My mom was a teacher, and she would make up a bunch of different songs and rhymes to remember anything in life.

And then I just started with a notebook, started writing things down, very badly when I first started, and then slowly got better, a little bit better, and then just started learning to put songs together.

And that's how I started with it.

- Young man, I don't like worms for breakfast.

(laughs) - All right.

(sandwich crunches and squelches) - Juicy.

- It is juicy.

- [Announcer] Juicy (echoes) - When you rhyme, is it... Is there more than one type?

Or is it just, like... Like, I know what a couplet is, right?

- Yeah.

♪ I have a cat ♪ ♪ I also have a bat ♪ The two things rhyme.

The two sentences rhyme.

Is there more to it?

- There's definitely more to it.

That would be an AA.

And then there's other things, like ABAB, which is an alternate rhyme, where you rhyme A and A together and B and B together.

So one line is A, then B. Then another line is A. Then another line is B.

- Wait, are we adding to a rhyme sandwich?

- Yes, yes.

- All right, so we need- - You can always add more things to your sandwich.

- This sandwich is getting heavy, Jul.

Can you give us a lyrical example of that?

- Yeah.

♪ I had to make a decision ♪ ♪ What am I gonna eat ♪ ♪ Fruit, waffles, or chicken ♪ ♪ Cereal or breakfast meat ♪ I'm getting really hungry.

I might need a sandwich of those.

- [Narrator] To get this job done, we must eat properly.

- When you're writing a song, you like to consider what and who you're writing for.

Like, I wrote a song for somebody's wedding, but I'm not gonna talk about breakup in the song, you know?

Or when I'm writing the kids' song, I'm not gonna talk about driving cars, because, you know, the kids can't relate to any of that stuff.

- They shouldn't drive the cars.

They shouldn't.

- No.

(daunting music) (engines buzz) - Well, I think the mood in this room is breakfast.

Can we make a song about that?

- Yeah, but it might leave you a little hungry.
