It's a song about trying to forgive, and in that trying, figuring out that it's less of something you do and more it's something you have to embody.
I wrote the song aspirationally, well before I'd forgiven the people that it's about, but I have since then forgiven, but it's a song that had to be written.
I was in the belly of a really difficult winter and I had lost touch with friends that I held really dear that I was in a band with and it was another reminder that I still loved them and that my forgiveness was this bleeding animal that if I didn't tend to it, would die.
There's a line in there that, "I know now forgiveness bleeds, and somehow it's in me."
Since that song came out, I've reconnected with nearly everyone that the song is about, and I feel like there is some closure and it only came when I stopped looking for it, which is annoying, but I have a very deep, tender spot in my heart for that song.
