Learn Moreabout PBS online sponsorshipa medium critics have four years claimed as dead and dying is in fact Alive and Well on college campuses Rider University's student-run radio station just claimed a big win named get this the best student station in the country for its category that's according to a national awards group since 1962 107.7 The bronc has given students a chance to spin their favorite music and get a jump start on their career and media Ted Goldberg spoke to some of the students behind the station 107.7 The Bronk and 1077 The bronx.com this is wake up Ryder my name is Nick Witkowski I'm joined by Owen McCarron yes sir after more than 30 years of sharing music conversation and sports Ryder University's student radio station is getting the national recognition it deserves the Intercollegiate broadcasting system media awards has named the bronc the best college radio station for schools with fewer than 10,000 students I don't look to win Awards but it's it's nice knowing that our hard work is being recognized so it just shows that we're not just college students we're hard workers as well we feel like we give those students the opportunity to succeed John Moses has been the Bronx general manager for 25 years he says students learn a lot from the station's variety and from having a Long Leash we put them in in on you know in on shows updates events or whatever that we think they can see succeed in and then give them that opportunity to grow stumble and have success as well too John really pushes us like he knows like we can do better if we mess up on stuff he's like you know this is good but you should do this and it's like taking that constructive criticism and then tweaking it making your own has been really helpful Julius Randle sealed the game for the Knicks with a game-winning three-pointer Jake Serrano transferred to Ryder in September thanks in part to the opportunities at the bronc I came here I took a tour in Thanksgiving and John was actually here and he was the first person to actually take me around and this was one of the things I really wanted to do was harping on radio and I kind of fell in love with it when he came in and I told him that when I came back one of the first things I did was come in here on my first day Serrano was another big winner from the IBS Awards earning the honors for best sports update I never thought in a million years that when I came here I already would make the impact on not only the radio station but on myself like as soon as I got here it was it was pretty wild when they see success they become even more passionate and even more aggressive in trying to become better so when they leave here and they enter the real world there they they hit the ground running um I also think that it develops Pride you know whether it's the radio station or the rider men's and women's basketball teams I think when you win uh Pride envelops the campus Serrano wants to work in radio or television after he graduates he says work ethic is one of the biggest lessons he's learned at Ryder John always has his 365 24/7 like you're here weekly when I go on spring break I'll be doing my sports updates that Nothing Stops Here Taylor will be doing her GM job will all be working I guess just talking to people honestly being more personable I already was like outgoing but talking to more people just really understanding them being more empathetic like with their situations and helping me be a better friend a better co-worker and just learning more leadership skills Serrano has one more year in college so he might not be done racking Up Radio awards at Ryder in Lawrenceville I'm Ted Goldberg NJ Spotlight news [Music]
