But when you're young, you wanna make a lot of noise.
And you wanna see what it's like having a electric guitar around your neck, and wires everywhere and amps, and all of that.
And I think it's always good to do things people aren't expecting - Yeah.
- to some degree.
And the ritual of...
The more apparatus you have, the further you are from the audience.
So, if you've got amplifiers and PAs, and microphones, you are literally behind a sort of screen of objects, and you exist.
You're kind of magnified by this sound and exalted by the volume that you can generate.
And of course dwarfed, if you're a big act, by a screen showing a huge version of you on the stage behind you.
So, there's Paul McCartney, who's a kind of little, an ant, but you're watching, you're not looking at Paul, you're looking at the screen Paul.
So, it's all big.
But actually, what's it like if you take all that stuff away?
I mean, obviously, you can't do that if you're playing a stadium, but you could probably do it playing city stages.
And I can do it here.
So, it's all about intimacy.

(attendees cheer and clap) The thing I miss most playing solo is harmonies.
But actually, my wife, Emma, is now singing harmony with me for the last third of the show, which is great.
And we've sung a lot together.
We have our weekly streaming show that we've done on and off since the pandemic.
And Emma is a great, she's a real singer.
I'm what they call a stylist.
I've got my own way of doing it.
And I've got the atmosphere that my voice conjures up, which is all well and good, but Em can actually sing.
So, when you put the pair of us there, we're both lead vocalists, so it's good.
It's like The Everly Brothers or something, you know?
And the thing I like most in my songs is harmonies, which I can't do on my own.
