Outpouring of appreciation for Rice across party lines

Longtime Essex County lawmaker and civil rights trailblazer Sen. Ron Rice will retire at the end of the month from the Senate seat he’s held for 36 years. Rice, whose retirement was brought on by health problems, has been a fixture in Trenton and Newark politics for decades -- and known for an independent streak.
