I'm Roqy Tyraid.
- And I'm DJ Ash10!
And you are watching "Playlist 48" on AZ PBS.
(title card whooshing) (mouse clicks) You know, with comics, like, comics hide how they feel through like a comedic approach.
And if you, like, really break down what I'm talking about, I'm talking about being broke.
(laughs) I'm talking about like being afraid as a black man in America.
I'm talking about, you know, being steamrolled by people in the industry who like crap all over you, because you don't adhere to what they think is dope.
And you know, like ,you just kind of challenging people's, you know, personas, and you know, and thinking about your place in that world.
But when it comes out, it's like, you know?
It's kinda witty and entertaining, but like I'm really telling you that there's issues.
(Roqy coughs) (title card whooshing) (mouse clicks) So, this next record is part of our, the project, "Outbreak," and this is really inspired by an experience that I had at a place called Passage to India in Tempe, Arizona.
For the locals who recognize it, highly recommend it, go it, go there.
The plate that I had was so fire, I named the record after it, and it's called "Tikka Masala," and I love the record so much, I went back and shot it there for full circle effect.
So, boom.
(tense hip-hop music) It's for people to treat our city like a flyover state.
Check it out.

Man, I've had an opportunity to do a bunch of crazy stuff, man.
And Phoenix, it's, I've been doing this out here since like 2006, 2007, we didn't have a lot of opportunities.
Like I said, they treated us like a flyover state.
They treated us like a tour stop.
When I would go on the road, and I would go to places like 83C, and and South by Southwest, and I'd say that I'm a Phoenician artist, they'd say, Phoenix, what?
(scoffs) What?
(scoffs) And I swear they would just look so perplexed, because maybe, like, they're able to point it, point at it on a map maybe like five years before that.
And now it's like these people who they respect artistically happen to be from this burgeoning area.
Now we're the fifth largest city in the United States, and there's a lot of talent out here.
But to be able to take that flag, that Phoenecian flag, that Arizona flag, and go across over overseas, with the mind them on the ends, and tap in with creators of Grime culture, and put that flag down and say, this is what we're doing in Phoenix.
That has really been one of the highlights of my moments as an artist.
And excuse me, I'm starting to get a little emotional.
I had the opportunity to link up with my man, my good friend at this point, his name is Teddy.
♪ Teddy - Silencer from the Grime community, from the Grime culture.
This is somebody, again, who's paved the way for a lot of people that I, and you are inspired by.
And to link up with somebody across there, and make something happen of this caliber has been a phenomenal experience.
And we gonna turn up the best that we can.
If you are at work, you're gonna have to excuse yourself to a break room, or excuse yourself to a car.
If you don't have tints, and you're looking at you going wild in your car, say, "This is a temp job, I'm gonna get fired anyways, and let's just eff it at this point."
So Ash, let's get it.
(laughs) (electronic chiptune music) ♪ Teddy - As you see, I've been doing the ODBs.

That is DJ Ash10, everybody say, "Respect the DJ!
Ah, respect the DJ!"
- Respect the DJ, ah.
- Fifa cup, Fifa cup, Fifa cup!
(Roqy coughs) Again, Roqy Tyraid, R-O-Q-Y T-Y-R-A-I-D.
I'mma let her introduce herself, please.
- DJ Ash10, just like it sounds.
- Yes, 1-0-A-S-H-1-0, R-O-Q-Y T-Y-R-A-I-D at PBS.
That's a lotta digits.
We gonna see y'all soon.
Make sure y'all check us out.
We are all over the place, but we're happy to be here in Phoenix, AZ, it's where we lay our heads.
So, until another time, peace.
(mouse clicks) (title card whooshes) - Oh.
- We first met through a mutual friend, and also musician, as you may have heard of him, Mega Ran.
- Yes, group member, by the way, our group member.
- Yes, part of Writers Guild.
- Writers Guild.
- So, definitely met through him.
Me and Mega Ran played kickball together.
So, (laughs) he introduced me to Roqy, and a lot of musicians on the scene here just to help me get exposed when I first moved here about seven years ago.
- Yeah, and then like, we rocked so many shows, and it came down to like, in recent history, we like did our own like solo show together, and we were like, "Yo, why haven't we done this before?"
You know?
And so, yeah.
I would describe the music scene as growing, and talented, and full of potential that we have yet to meet, and that we are still, we are starting to see the fruits of our labor right now.
I can, I'm not, what I'm not gonna do is sit here, and like name a couple artists, because there's so many talented artists out here.
I met, we talk about Ran, like, I met Ran, and there's this days called The Hidden House.
We had spots like called The Hidden House off Osborne and Seventh Ave. And you know, even back further, there was a place called RapStock where it's what it sounds like, you know, there's like 40 people, local rappers on one bill, and they just like fit the rap scene into RapStock, the sets, in like Famous Sam's in Glendale.
And like, now we have like this, genres were everywhere, before, an artist like myself, you know, a DJ like Ash, you know, someone like our group members, we didn't really have a lot of places.
Oh, and Blunt Club, of course.
- Mm.
- But outside of Blunt Club, we didn't have a lotta places where we can express ourselves as MCs.
And now it went from having like a couple spots we can go to, to like, you just feel it in the air.
You can just like click on a live, you can go to somebody's like pages, and their secret shows, and we have a legitimate, like, scene.
And it's beautiful to say, 'cause we did not a few years ago.
- I would definitely have to agree with Roqy that a few years ago, there wasn't much of a music scene in Phoenix.
It was a lot of the big names touring coming through, but you never heard of a lot of the local artists, and things like that.
So, to see it grow, even in the time I've been here in the last seven years, has really been incredible.
But there are so many artists that are burgeoning, that are established, that are celebrated globally, that are from Phoenix that it's, I want to see more of a presence globally from the folks in Phoenix.
So, we do have to start traveling more, and touring, and getting out there.
So, yeah, I think this is gonna be an awesome music scene, especially being now the fifth largest city in the US, so, we got something to prove.
- And facts, and I also wanna say, where we like to see it go, where I'd like to see it go is I'd like to see it go from people, like, there's a term we used to use, we used to call it like sandbox.
Like, we need to step outside of that box, and like, the microcosm, like, this is like through and through in every scene in the United States.
But as a new scene, we have to really adhere to what I'm about to say.
Like, we can't just look at our little microcosm as like our universe.
Like Ash said, it's time to get out there, get your stamps in.
We have people traveling around, but we need to see more.
Like I said earlier about planting a flag, let's go plant that, I wanna see somebody in like Rio, you know?
- Ooh.
- We wanna see more of us in like Prague, we wanna see some of like Lagos, like, listen, like, what are we talking about?
Let's bring Phoenix to the world, let's bring Arizona to the world.
That's what I wanna see more of.
