A great way to encourage people to visit your hometown is to offer them something to see.
That's what South Milwaukee is doing through a community mural program. By having local artists create and paint murals in their Downtown, they hope to attract people to their quaint, beautiful city. Their newest mural is on the side of the popular Mexican Restaurant, Azteca. Painted by Rozalia Hernandez-Singh, her mural represents both American and Mexican culture.

Learn Moreabout PBS online sponsorship- I know right now there's this idea of immigrants feeling threatened and what I found that was really interesting as I'm painting this mural is all the people who come by who are super excited.
(upbeat music) I didn't have any negative comments, all positive, which shows like the support that I see that is within this town of South Milwaukee.
(upbeat music continues) Hi, my name is Rozalia Hernandez-Singh and this is my new mural and South Milwaukee.
It's on the side of the Azteca restaurant.
This is probably, I feel like, the most popular restaurant in the area.
(upbeat music continues) The owners of Azteca gave me some ideas of some things that they were interested in.
They mentioned the Aztec warrior that they were interested in and also the brightly colored houses that they have in Mexico and pyramid.
(upbeat music ending) Somebody else mentioned doing the Day of the Dead Catrina.
So I added that and then because I saw all the plants around this area, I knew I needed to add nature.
I wanted to add Wisconsin.
So I have two Wisconsin birds in here and then I added one from Mexico.
And in the background I combined more of like an abstract kind of play on shapes and colors for movements.
While I've been here working on the mural, I've had people give me some history of this area, including I had two guys who told me about their grandfather who came here in the 1920s from Mexico, and they said that there was a little area where the Mexican families would live not too far from here.
So just things like that is very inspiring.
So I feel like I have an idea of where I'm going with something.
And then I feel like the influence of the people kind of fills it in.
This street is Milwaukee Avenue, which is their downtown area.
You'll be met with other murals that are in the area.
I think they came up with the idea that murals would be a way to kind of welcome people into this area.
That was the intention is to welcome people into South Milwaukee.
