College communities remain on edge tonight as Pro Palestinian demonstrations continue across campuses Nationwide and more University leaders are responding with the use of police to remove both protesters and the encampments they've set up at Columbia University the epicenter of the national movement against the Israel Hamas War students were given a 2PM deadline today to leave the central lawn campus they've been occupying for the last two weeks or face suspension according to the university the move was an attempt to clear the encampment to prepare for graduation ceremonies on May 15th without involving law enforcement but students appeared ready to face the consequences voting to Buck the deadline and stay put meanwhile at Rutgers University in New Brunswick today about 400 student protesters rallied and set up tents on the Vorhees mall vowing to hold out until leadership meets with them over demands to Di best from Israeli linked companies and institutions Ted Goldberg was on the ground and has the latest we will not stop we will not rest dis disclose tents have popped up at Ruckers as students plan to camp out until their school divests from companies associating with Israel this is an issue that they don't want ignored and they feel like they've been through every uh system that's in place to get them to uh uh advocate for this being taken seriously Muslim chaplain Kaiser Aslam says Rutgers brought this on themselves by ignoring their students while a majority of students did not vote in the recent referendum the ones who did overwhelmingly voted in favor of Rucker divesting and ending its partnership with Tel Aviv University hey don't you know T has got to go t has got to go in a statement Rutgers said president Jonathan Holloway noted in a message to the Rutgers Community earlier this month that the University's partnership with ta began in 2016 and adds to our fundamental academic and research Mission Rutgers has relationships like this with universities all over the world and they help move our mission forward the Board of Governors met two weeks ago and didn't addressed divestment in open session it still wasn't uh uh uh addressed then so that's why a public action like this is now taking place because they went through the private meetings they've went through open meetings they've tried closed meetings none of it seems to be gaining traction so now it's public kind of uh uh ad advocacy in order to make uh the divestment real that board of Governor meeting got heated are you actually hearing me Holloway can you can you respond if you're hearing me yeah students accused Holloway of ignoring them when you hear myself and my comrades outside this room asking for you to look at us I would ask you if you think that the community is really possible millions are poured into comp companies such as Motorola Amazon and other companies while our community continues to suffer while millions of Palestinians are at the risk of starvation students rallied and marched today with a few professors standing by for support this is a free country people have a right to express their opinions this doesn't seem aggressive to me I mean it seems passionate but that's different Professor Colin Jager says students have been loud but respectful the first few hours of the encampment did not lead to anyone being arrested it's a very complicated issue there are a lot of inflame feelings on all kinds of sides I think our students have done a nice job they've been respectful they didn't disrupt Rutger's day you know um so I'm I'm here to support them we know thaty thaty is not is not going to free colge with summer break around the corner osam says it was important for students to express themselves before so many of them head home this is Rutger's University the summer is never truly the summer there's always activity that's here as well so I'm sure you're going to see some pressure from that end but it's going to be significantly reduced in response to this story Holloway says he respects the students right to protest as long as it doesn't interfere with University operations he did not mention whether or not tents were allowed on campus in New Brunswick I'm Ted Goldberg NJ Spotlight News [Music]
