Learn Moreabout PBS online sponsorship♪ - Coming from the North, I think I still kinda had this idea that, like, it was either Appalachian folk music or rap coming from the South.
And to see it just runs the gamut, it just feels really cool to be a piece of the puzzle.

It's so cool.
It's kind of like a new way to honor it.
I think today we had a little bit of trepidation about it because we're a little loud.
So second thought was, should be careful around this.

It's a series of three women.
There's like a 17th or 18th century painting of a woman.
There is a more modern, I think it was the 70s painting of a woman and then there's a there's a photograph of a woman that I think was taken somewhat recently.
That piece really resonated with me.
Just, you know, as a cisgendered woman, and thinking about my place in the world, and my place in history, and what you know how I impact the space around me.
And looking at this comparison of these three women who are being honored in this way, you know, being captured, their image is being captured in this way.
It just kind of made me stop and think about, you know, who I am as a woman and what I do.

So growing up and playing music as a teenager, it was hard to not be influenced by the local bands that I was playing with.
So there is a wealth of really great music coming out of this area that I think shapes a lot of the sound of a lot of the bands that remain in the area.
- I think we're maybe not as like rambunctious as like a super [indistinct] but we definitely fit in the mold of like moody, emotional indie rock.
- I moved here at the same time as Rachel.
And that's what I remember was that this area was like really fertile for music, indie music, like we play now in that time.
And that was just kind of what, it was like the soup that we swam in.
- And me coming here more recently and seeing this like, really diverse landscape of music that happens in North Carolina.
You know, I coming from the north, I think I still kind of had this idea that like it was either like Appalachian folk music or like rap coming from the south.
And to see like, you know, the stuff that y'all are talking about and everything else that's happening here experimental music, you know, it just runs the gamut.

Now, I hate the phrase, now more than ever, because it's like I've heard it so many times.
But now more than ever these organization like we really have to fight for them to prove that art has value.
While it's not, you know, a one-to-one dollar value.
It's so highly valued right now in this moment.
People are more concerned with that.
Just trying to prove the significance of having an art community at this moment is very important.
