your brain in the name of the love ♪ - This is War And I'm here today on the State and Water show here with two of the people in our city that's helping us uplift the youth and uplift our community.
To my left, we've got D-Mill.
To my right, we've got Antoine Banks.
And I wanted to bring them today on this show because what they're doing in the community is phenomenal.
It's very uplifting to our youth and everybody that watches what they doing.
I felt it was only right to bring them on here today, so we could talk about how we bringing all these things together and using music and the power of influence of the pop culture to influence our youth to do the right thing.
First, I want to start with D-Mill.
You had an organization called Change the Lyrics.
I want you to talk about that a little bit.
- Right, so there's a whole bunch of umbrellas of companies that I'm involved in.
But, one of the charitable ones that we're starting up is the Change the Lyrics nonprofit so, that's pretty much it.
We're just reaching out to artists that are in our cipher, bigger artists.
Just ask them to be conscious with the lyrics that they're putting out to the youth.
That's one thing I noticed with coaching kids.
The stuff that they're listening to when I'm driving 'em I'm like, "this is what you guys listen to?"
Like, little kids, you know?
Like fifth graders, sixth graders, seventh graders, high school.
But if that's all they're listening to they're just being programmed, y'know?
So I know a lot of hip hop artists that choose to not say this thing or not say that thing for a reason, because they know people are watching.
So, that's what the campaign is about.
Change the Lyrics, that's it.
- That's amazing.
I love that, that whole concept and that whole organization.
And I salute you for doing everything you're doing.
I look forward to working with you in the future and projects we already got planned on.
So y'all be on the lookout.
We got some big things coming.
Now, I want to get to my man's Antwaun Banks.
He was at the Don't Start at the Park and I seen this guy, a little kid, came there.
He was unsupervised and they have no parents there, nothing.
We don't even know how he got there.
This guy spotted this little guy out of nowhere.
Man took him under his wing gave him a shirt, introduced him to everybody gave him the phone numbers, man, you need some help.
You need some support, tell your parents and they could contact any one of us and we'll be there for you.
I mean, it was just amazing to see you snatch a kid right up then, and be his mentor right there.
That was amazing to see that.
And I salute you for that.
So I definitely want to bring you on to talk about all the other amazing things that you already got going on with the youth in the community.
- Thank you.
We work, just trying to deter the young men and women to do things differently than we did.
We got out there and thought we was doing things the right way.
It took a lot out of the community.
So it's always great for us to be able to put something back in.
I think that if we can deter them, we won't have to rehabilitate them because it's unnatural to be incarcerated.
So we need to have some programs.
When we were younger, we had Biddy basketball.
We had a lot of things that we could go and do to deter us.
Now it's more like a microwave, a video game type society where the kids are just learning, you know what the internet had.
So we got to bring some type of morals and values to them so that they understand, you know to uplift your community is good and bad doesn't necessarily mean bad.
- And I love when you said deter them so we don't have to rehabilitate them because that's what the whole Don't Start movement is about.
It's about catching them before they make them wrong decisions.
So if we get them younger at a younger age to stop being influenced by the negative things and the things that we allowed to lead us astray, and, sitting here, we happy that we was able to redirect our lives to a better path and a more constructive path that's uplifting.
So, it's hard to rehabilitate, it's hard to change somebody or get them to stop doing something that they then immerse they whole life in.
But if we could get them before they even get there we have a way greater success rate at changing the whole game - Way better change.
I always tell the kids and the young men like life don't have a pause or rewind button.
So you want to try to do it best the first time and learn from the people who have experience, you know?
I thought it was dope what y'all did at the Don't Start I had more fun than the kids did!
- I had a ball too.
I seen the chief, he was out there having a ball.
And that's what made me feel so good!
Just to see everybody having fun.
The police with the community.
I mean, I sat there in the days a few times, like, wow I never thought I'd be doing something like this.
And to see how much joy it was bringing the officers was having so much fun Shout out Chief Marion, shout out to Demario Boone shout out to all the officers that came out, man.
And all the community members that came out in a time where it's probably not the most popular thing to be around police officers and stuff.
So everybody that said, you know forget the naysayers I'm doing what I feel is right.
And we fighting our wars with love and peace and kindness and empathy.
That's the right way to go, man.
So shout out to everybody that came out, man, salute.
I definitely want to salute these two guys right here because me and Joe, we can't do this alone.
You know, I'm gonna bring Joe up real quick.
Come on, come on up here real quick, Joe.
and bring Joe up here real quick, because this guy right here is like my little ninja assassin.
Like when it comes to the Don't Start, Joe might creep up on you in the stand, like, Hey, you heard of the Don't Start movement?
And you had a baseball game in Wrigley field somewhere Joe pushing Don't Start.
So I definitely want to salute Joe.
You know, Joe did more work at the Don't Start at the Park 2 than me.
So I'm just going to put that out there for everybody.
He put in more work than me running back and forth like this guy, like 15 years old.
So, go ahead and, you know, tell them how you feel, Joe, and give everybody a shout out.
Anything you want to say to the audience?
- Don't start, as War said, is very important to us.
I'm retired now.
And this is my new job I might say.
And we needed to shout out to Carl Cannon.
Carl was our inspiration for this song.
- Go ahead and tell the people where they can reach you at if they need to get they kids involved with some mentor programs or something like that.
Because that's real important for people to know that.
- We have a curriculum we put together with a Youth Development Academy.
I'm the founder and CEO of Product of the Projects, AKA POP.
You can reach us at productoftheproject.org for the website and POPproject8@gmail.com for the email.
Thanks for the time.
- What about you, D?
- Mostly in the community, if you've got kids that are hoopers, I'm a coach involved in a team, FOE, TTG, Wesley Witherspoon, and Low, and all the crew.
So if you've got a kid that's a baller and you want to get them involved.
That's where I reach the kids the best is on the court.
So I just, you know, stay involved.
- Only together can we really make a real change.
So like I was saying, we can't do this by ourself.
Us up appear on the stage, we need all y'all help.
We need all y'all's support to fight all these wars out here with love and peace.
And that's the way we're going, so we salute y'all, we thank y'all for having us, and we about to get to this music.
