The first Europeans to lay claim to the land that eventually became Illinois.

The first Europeans to lay claim to the land that eventually became Illinois started exploring the region during the 1600’s. On maps they referred to this area as “Upper Louisiana” and eventually establish an administrative center on the banks of the Mississippi River. Visiting: Fort de Chartres, Annual Fort de Chartres Rendezvous, and Fort Massac State Park.
