MY FATHER UHHH... HAD BEEN A LONGTIME FOOTBALL COACH AND NOT REALLY HAD A FATHER OF HIS OWN.
HE HAD RAISED US ON A MODEL OF FOOTBALL.
I MAEN, YOU CAN IMAGINE FROM ALL THE DISCIPLINES AND TRAINING AND RUNNING AND WORKOUT REGIMENTS AND EVERYTHING ELSE THATS KIND OF HOW HE RAISED US AND SO GOING FROM THERE AND GOING TO THE HIGH SCHOOL, WAITE HIGH SCHOOL WHICH IS MY ALMA MATER.
PROUD TO BE FROM THE EAST SIDE, PROUD TO BE FROM WAITE HIGH SCHOOL.
WENT OF FROM WAITE HIGH SCHOOL AND PLAYING FOOTBALL AND WAS ABLE TO GET A SCHOLASHIP F5ROM THE UNIVERSITY OF TOLEDO PLAYED INSIDE AS WELL AS OUTSIDE LINEBACKER UNDER GARY PINKEL.
HAD A GREAT OPPORTUNITY OF LEARNING ABOUT LEADERSHIP THERE AND THEN HAD LEFT RIGHT THERE IN THE MIDDLE OF FOOTBALL SEASON.
SIGNED A CONTRACT WITH TPS SO.
WE LITTERALLY PLAYED A FOOTBALL BOWL GAME ON DECEMBER 19TH.
I WAS TEACHING IN THE CLASSROOM 2 WEEKS LATER AT ELEMENTARY.
I WAS A 4TH GRADE TEACHER.
LOVED AND ENJOYED EVERY BIT OF IT.
WENT ON TO BE A DEAN OF STUDENTS ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL, PRINIPAL AND CURRENTLY THE SUPERINTENDENT OF TOLEDO PUBLIC SCHOOLS.
KRISTI: DID YOU KNOW YOU ALWAYS WANTED TO BE IN EDUCATION OR HOW DID THAT COME TO FRUITION?
DR DURANT: I HAVE ALWAYS HAD A GREAT REPORT WITH KIDS IN GENERAL FOR WHATEVER REASON.
YOU KNOW THEY RESPONDED TO ME DIFFERENTLY WETHER YOU PLAYED ON THE SAME TEAM AS ME OR YOU WERE A SIBLING OF ANOTHER INDIVIDUAL OR YOU WERE SOMEONE ELSE'S CHILD.
IT JUST SEEMED LIKE I HAD A NATURAL NICHE TO WALK INTO THE SITUATION AND THEY RESPONDED AND SO AS I WAS GOING THROUGH COLLEGE I GO TO THE POINT WHERE I STARTED TO HAVE REVOLATIONS IN ESSENCE OF HAVING THIS RAPORT TO WHERE IT WAS MORE AND MORE ON MY MIND AND ONE DAY YOU KNOW WHAT REALLY GOT ME THINKING WAS CHUCK EALEYS SON WHO WAS A GREAT LEGEND AT UT IN REGARDS TO I THINK 36-0 OF HIS RECORD, HIS SON IS NAMED DAMON EALY WHO CAME IN AND WAS GOING INTO EDUCATION SO HE PUT IT IN MY THOUGHT I THOUGHT OH ILL THINK ABOUT IT AND THEN I STARTED TO WALK OVER THE BRIDGE AND THERE WAS A GENTLEMEAN WHO WAS PART OF SAVAGE HALL WHICH WAS PART OF THE ADMINISTRATIVE BUILDING AFRICAN AMERICAN GENTLEMAN, HE SAID YOU KNOW HOW COME YOU ARENT IN THE DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION AS A MAJOR?
AND I WAS LIKE OK THIS IS THE SECOND TIME AND I SAID I DON''T KNOW AND I TOOK THE ASSUMPTION MOST PEOPLE SAY THEY SAY THERE IS NOT ENOUGH MONEY IN EDUCATION, THATS WHAT IU WOULKD HEAR.
FROM ADULTS AND SO FORTH AND UHH A GUY THAT SAID LOOK AT ME, DO I LOK LIKE IM STRUGLING?
HE HAD A SUIT ON AND I KNEW IT, I SAID NO SIR AND HE SAID \ THEN YOU SHOULD PROBABLY RECONSIDER AND DO YOUR OWN HOMEWORK AND FIND OUT THAT EDUCATION IS A GREAT LIVING, GREAT LIFE, AND MORE IMPORTANTLY YOUR RICHES SHOULD BE ABOUT THE FEELINGS YOU HAD WITH EACH AND EVERY KID AND BECAUSE OF THAT I DID JUST HAT AND HAD PRAYED ON IT AND CAME HOME, TOLD MY PARENTS I WAS CHANGING MY MAJOR FROM PHARMACY TO EDUCATION THEY WERENT HAPPY BUT I TRIED TO REMIND THEM THIS DAY THEY WOULD FORGET THEY WERE UPSET WITH ME FOR CHANGING MY MAJOR.
KRISTI: TELL US HOW MANY SHCOOLS, HOW MANY STUDENTS YOU ARE IN CHARGE OF?
DR DUTRANT: YOU KNOW, TOLEDO PUBLIC SCHOOLS IS THE LARGEST SCHOOL DISTRICT IN NW OHIO ABOUT THE 4TH LARGEST IN THE STATE OF OHIO.
UHHH AGAIN WE HAVE AROUND 23,000 STUDENTS.
WE HAVE 54 BUILDINGS BETWEEN THE ELEMENTARY, HIGH SCHOOL AS WELL AS MAGNET SCHOOLS.
KRISTI: TALK TO US ABOUT ONE OF YOUR GREATEST SUCCESSES AT TPS.
DR DURANT: YOU KNOW WHAT IT IS KIND OF SEVERAL O FTHEM.
AGAIN I RUN A MENTOR GROUP CALLED YOUNG MEN OF EXCELLENCE, YOUNG WOMEN OF EXCELLENCE UHH AND THATS REALLY TRANSFORMING THE LIVES OF INDIVIDUALS GOING THROUGJH HARDSHIP AND THEY ARE COMING TOGETHER, THE COLLEGIALITY OF STUDENTS WHO COME TOGETHER AND WORK TOGETHER BUT ONE, THE GENERATION OF THAT HAS I HAVE TAKEN GREAT PRIDE IN MENTORSHIP AS A REWARDING TO ME.
BUT I THINK WHEN YOU TALK ABOUT FROM THE FUNCTIONALITY OF EDUCATION, GROWTH AND THE GRADUATION RATE HAS BEEN PHENOMINAL.
WE HAVE THE HIGHEST GROWTH IN THE STATE OF OHIO.
WE HAD LITERALLY MOVED FROM THE BOTTOM, LITTERALLY TO MIDDLE OF THE PACK WITH GROWTH OF AROUND 20 GRADUATION POINTS UMM MOVING FORWARD AND THIS FALL WE WILL BE EXCITED BECAUSE WE EVEN INCREASED MORE WHICH IS HUGE FOR THE FACT THAT THE GRADUATION RATE IS A CHALLENGE TO US FOR THE FACT THAT ONE WE HAVE TO KEEP TRACK OF EVERY STUDENT FOR 4 YEARS.
YOU HAVE TO UNDERSTAND THAT WE HAVE THE HIGHEST MOBILITY RATE MEANING RESIDENTS IN TOLEDO HAVE THE HIGHEST MOBILITY RATE MEANING THEY MOVE ALL OVER THE PLACE AND IF WE DON'T FIND THEM THEY ARE CONSIDERED A DROPOUT.
YOU CAN IMAGINE THE CHALLENGES OF INCREASING THE GRADUATION RATE OF THINGS THAT ARE OUTSIDE OF THE NORMS OF WHAT EDUCATION DEALS WITH.
ONE, WE HAVE TO MAKE SURE WE FIND YOU, FEED YOU MAKE YOU FEEL SECURE, BUT AT THE SAME TIME WALK YOU THROUGH THAT PATHWAY AND HOLD YOU BY HAND TO MAKE SURE YOU CROSS THAT FINISH LINE AND THATS KIND OF THE MOST REWARDING THING BECAUSE ALL HANDS HAVE BEEN THERE ON THE EFFORT AND I HAVE BEEN EXCITED TO SEE HOW THE GRADUATION RATE HAS CLIMBED OVER THE YEARS AND WE CONTINUE TO KEEP IT CLIMBING.

DR DURANT: SO YOU KNOW WHAT PEOPLE DON'T REALIZE AND IF THEY KNOW PERSONALLY WHERE THEY SEE, MIGHT BE ON LINKEDIN THAT I SIT ON 12 BOARDS SO IT TAKES A LOT OF MY TIME AND AS I AM BEING ON A LOT OF LOCAL COMMUNITY BOARDS WETHER IT IS THE ART MUSEUM, IMAGINATION STATION WETHER IT IS THE ART MUSEUM, IMAGINATION STATION UNITED WAY, THE YMCA SOME OF IT IN THE DISTRICT.
ALL THESE ARE INDIVIDUAL BOARDS THAT EXIST.
THERE IS A THING OF PAYING IT FORWARD BUT MORE IMPORTANTLY MAKING SURE TPS IS PAYING ITS RESPECT AND BEING PART OF THE SOLUTION IN MANY OF THESE ENTITIES AS WELL AS HELPING SOME OF THE GRASSROOT AGENCIES COME UP AND DEVELOP THEMSELVES SO THEY CAN GET FUNDING AS WELL AS OTHER THINGS IN RESPECT TO BEING ABLE TO PROVIDE A SERVICE TO THE COMMUNITY KRISTI: TALK ABOUT A SOLID STRATEGY.

IN OCTOBER OF 2020.
UHH ESSENTIALLY WHAT WE HAVE DONE IS BROUGHT THE HOSPITAL INTO THE PATIENTS HOME.
SO WE ARE ABLE TO CARE FOR A SELECT DIAGNOSIS SUCH AS CONGESTIVE HEART FAILURE, COPD, WE HAVE BEEN DOING A LOT OV COVID, CELLULITIS, PNUEMONIA AND WE ARE ABLE TO CARE FOR PATIENTS IN THEIR HOME BY USING REMOTE TELEMONITORING BOTH INPATIENT AND VIRTUAL VISITS WITH HEALTHCARE PROFESSIONALS INCLUDING NURSE PRACTITIONERS UMM RNS, PHYSICIANS AND PARAMEDICS.
UHH AND BOTH AUDIO AND VIDEO SESSIONS DURING THE DAY TO CONTINUE TO MINITOR THEM.
KRISTI: THIS IS TRULY AND INNOVATIVE PROGRAM.
SO HOW DOES PROMEDICA ACUTE CARE WORK IN TERMS OF THE PATIENTS ACCESSING SERVICES PROVIDED.
THERE IS A COUPLE DIFFERENT WAYS PATIENTS CAN END UP UNDER OUR CARE.
ONE WOULD BE FROM THE EMERGENCY ROOM.
AT ONE OF THE PROMEDICA HOSPITALS.
IF THE ARE IN APPRORPIATE PATIENT WITH THE APPROPROATE DIAGNOSIS UHH THEN WE COULD ADMIT THEM TO HOME FROM THE EMERGENCY ROOM.
THE OTHER CURRENT WAY WE ARE ACCOMPLISHING THIS IS DISCHARGING PATIENTS FROM THE HOSPITAL EARLY THAN THEY WOULD BE DISCHARED AND WE DISCHARGE THEM HOME TO CONTINUE TO BE UNDER OUR CARE.
KRITSI: IN TERMS OF TECHNOLOGY HOW DOES THAT WORK WITH THE PATIENT WHO IS AT HOME.
WHAT KINDS OF TECHNOLOGY DO THEY NEED TO HAVE?
WE EQUIP EVERY HOME WITH AN IPAD UHHH A PHONE WICH YOU PICKUP THE PHINE AND IMMEDIATLY CALLS US.
THEY GET A PERSONAL EMERGENCY RESPONSE WATCH.
THEY HAVE A BACKUP POWER SUPPLY THEY HAVE A ROUTER THAT UMMM INSURES THEY HAVE ACCESS, WE WILL NOT LOSE CONNECTIVITY TO THEM.
AND EVERYTHING THEY NEED TO MONITOR THEIR VITALS FROM HOME AS WELL.

AND THEN A FEW YEARS LATER WE RAN INTO MADDISON AGAIN AT AN ANNUAL WELLNESS CONFERENCE PUT ON BY THE EMPLOYERS ASSOCIATION IN TOLEDO NAMI WAS AT THE CONFERENCE TO LAUNCH STIGMA FREE COMPANY.
AND MADDISON AND HYLANT JUMPED RIGHT IN AND INVITED US BACK TO HYLANT TO SHARE THAT STIGMA FREE PRESENTATION.
SO NOW HYLANT IS ONE OF OUR PREMEIRE STIGMA FREE COMPANIES AND WE ARE EXCITED ABOUT THAT PARTNERSHIP.
