Guests discuss the conversion of farmland to a wetlands area in Putnam County.

Chicago-based Wetlands Initiative returned 3,000 acres to nature after it was farmed for a century. The organization turned off the pumps that formerly drained the land, and seeds germinated that had lain dormant for nearly a hundred years. Then 276 species of birds made it their destination. It’s the Dixon Waterfowl Refuge at Hennepin and Hopper Lakes along the Illinois River in Putnam County.
