Crossroads

Sail the Philadelphia!

1/28/1991 | 26m 2sVideo has Closed Captions

History of the gunboat "Philadelphia" that sank in Lake Champlain.

Three-day battle on Lake Champlain in October 1776 was hard-fought, but fatal to Arnold's fleet. His own gunboat "Philadelphia" sank after the initial engagement. Although Arnold and most of his men escaped during a daring nighttime flight, the British had gained control of Lake Champlain. Historians have long pointed to the naval contest for Lake Champlain as the foundation for Burgoyne's defeat.
