(uplifting music) - Salt Lake County Art in Public Places invites you to celebrate more than a dozen local artists whose work will soon be on display.
Joining us to share more about the county's growing visual arts collection is Kate Ithurralde.
Thank you so much for joining us.
- Yeah, thank you so much for having me.
I'm really excited to be here today.
- I'm excited to hear more about this exciting celebration.
Tell me about it.
- Yeah, so on April 15th, Wednesday April 15th, we'll be celebrating the new acquisitions to the Salt Lake County Visual Art Collection.
The reception is from 5:00 to 7:00 PM, with remarks at 5:30 at the Salt Lake County Government Center.
It's a free event, so please come on by, and there'll be light refreshments as well.
- And I hear for the first time there's an audio art piece that's gonna be included?
- Yes.
We're so excited about this work.
It's called Sequencer Sampler.
Sequencer is a quilt that was created by local artist Mary Toscano.
It's a traditional log cabin style quilt.
And then Andrew Shaw composed a, like, a soundscape to the patterns of the quilt.
What I get really excited about this piece is usually people only view art for about 30 seconds and less than 30 seconds.
We're noticing that visitors are really experiencing the full sound of this piece, which is more than six minutes long.
And when you pay that much attention to art, you notice all the intricate details and it really becomes like a robust experience.
- Why is this something that you feel like more people in the community need to experience?
- Yeah, so we take a year to select artwork for the Salt Lake County Visual Art Collection, and we really view it as the visual art timeline of Salt Lake County, I mean yeah, of our residents of Salt Lake County.
And so we just want everybody in the public to experience this visual art collection, and we think that what's what's important for art in the future, and this soundscape really changes how public art is viewed.
It becomes more than just a visual experience.
- And I love that you guys are making sure that it stays accessible for people as well.
Thank you so much for joining us.
